Knew I was forgetting some. like Karlsson and Datsyuk. I'll edit..

Gotta admit, I know Ruotsalainen, but not much about him. He can't be third on the finns though. Isn't Numminen a better D-man?

Including Orr, Howe, Richard doesn't hide the fact that this "all time" list is really post-1980...

Lets see yours? I doubt you can put any pre 1980 players on the Finns, Swedes or Czechs? Not too sure about the USA. For Russia you could probably take some soviet players, but they have pretty stacked forward group on the list already.

I think Fetisov was better than Ovechkin. Ovechkin is terrific, but has had no playoff success or international success. Hell, he only has 3 WC golds despite playing pretty much every year and being the best player on the ice. Meanwhile Fetisov may be the best international player ever and dominated in the Soviet league.

For Swedes a case could be made for Salming.

For Czechs Druzilla and Holezec could be considered.

For Finns Ylönen (depending how you value ability vs. relative role compared to peers), potentially Hagman. With Finns you have Selänne and Kurri, then Tikkanen and Lehtinen and fifth spot is wide open (Ruotsalainen, Kiprusoff, S. Koivu, Numminen or one from the older generations)

That's fair. I never saw Fetisov play, so I can't comment really. All I can base it on is stat lines, which are inherently an incomplete picture.

Where's Matthews? How many Americans have scored 40 goals in their 1st season and carried their team to the playoffs? He's doing it against this season.

Jesus man.

You don't make the top 10 over players like Modano, Hull, Roenick, Housley, Mullen, Weight, Leetch, Lafontaine, Chelios, Amonte, Leclair, Mcnab, Kane and plenty of others who have PPG or Near PPG careers with close to or over 1000 points and multiple cups and awards because you had a 69 point rookie season and lost in the first round.

Get a grip.

From what I gather, a number of people considered him the best or at least on par with the NHL's best in the early 80's. A Bourque/Potvin type at his best.

Gretzky said Fetisov was the best defenceman he ever played against.

Yeah I know.

Not bad top 5.

Total Regular season NHL stats by Finns: 43576 GP, 6826 Goals, 12455 Assists, 19281 Points
These 5 players have combined:
5826 GP, 1889 Goals, 2747 Assists, 4636 Points
--->
13.37% of all regular season games played by Finns
27.67% of all regular season goals scored by Finns
22.06% of all regular season assists scored by Finns
24.04% of all regular season points scored by Finns

Then we could continue to the playoffs stats of these 5...

That's the problem with your list. You think the russian group is stacked while probably not one of them would make the all-time top 5 list.

1.Kharlamov 2.Bobrov 3.Tretiak 4.Makarov 5.Fetisov

And the top 3 is not debatable.

Bourque/Potvin?

As far as I can remember he was the only one who played for the soviet national team as a 17y.o. as a defenceman.

And at 18 he was pretty much a prime Lidstrom and got better after that obviously.
