The Darkest Timeline
There have been a bunch of threads/talk recently about Toronto trying to acquire top 4 Dmen (Trouba, Fowler, etc.) as well as a few threads about other teams looking for a top 4 Dman. So, I figured I'd make a thread for discussion of possible trades for Leafs acquiring a top 4 defenseman.

Feel free to offer any defensemen that meet what the Leafs are looking for:

Top 4 Dman
Young enough to play with this core long-term (No older than, lets say, 28?)
Right handed or at least the ability to play on the right side (Babcock likes his right side Dmen to be RHD, but beggars can't be choosers).
2-way Defenseman preferred (we have enough OFD and puck movers)

Feel free to offer trades that have been proposed in other threads (preferably ones that were well received by the other fanbase) or something new.

Most likely trade bait:
JVR
Bozak
Non 1st round picks
Hunwick/Polak (if other team needs a #6 back as part of the trade, relatively little value)

Lots of middle 6 forward prospects that keep/trade decisions will have to be made soon so I think most of the following could be considered trade bait as well: Leipsic, Lindberg, Johnsson, Leivo, Rychel, and Gauthier

Less likely, but possibly moved:
Gardiner ( we want to add to defense, but if player coming back is better and the trade makes sense, the Leafs would consider it)
Carrick (value is probably less to other teams than to the Leafs, has decent potential but will obviously consider an upgrade)
Komarov (I don't think he gets moved because his value is lower than what he brings to the Leafs)

*This isn't the exclusive list of players available as pretty much everybody is available for the right trade, but the most likely to be moved (either due to competition for spots or their fit within the team)*

So, what kind of offers are out there?

Timing isn't right to go out and force a move for the sake of making it. Leafs are destined for a bottom -10 finish this season if they live up to their expectations, more likely bottom-5.

The pieces you mentioned aren't very enticing to a team we're asking a top 4 d-man off of, Looking it over I could honestly see not a single one being in the maple leafs future plans, If we decide it's no more Bozak or JVR, it'll be picks coming back our way, and those trades are best made in about 3 months time.

Expansion draft could see a couple top 4 guys shaken loose, and the Leafs will have like 5-7 young forwards and defenseman, all who don't require an expansion spot, all who'll have played a full NHL season at least. Those contracts will be in demand, inflating the value of a guy like Sosh, Hyman, or Brown, add a pick from the stash we add at next years trade deadline and presto.

Just look at Edmonton, there is no switch, they bottomed out for years until McDavid saved them, over that time they slowly built up their team, a Klefbom here, Hall there, made some moves to even out their team, got some solid work from Talbot and they look like a legit team. Let's not forget that the Leafs Rebuild truly started after the 2014/15 season when they fired the majority of the staff, it's been 2 offseasons, one full season, Patience, thy name is Leaf

(BTW, Community is my all time Fave show, I named my dog Winger, I tell people it's because of Hockey, but in truth I got it from the show)

It doesnt solve your needs but would help buy some time would be emelin for bozak. Toronto needs space for their centerman and emelin would eat a lot of minutes.we would probalbly have to find a new home for desharnais first though.

Why would the Habs do this? Bozak isn't what we need.

A reliable two-way centerman that excels on draws is exactly what we need.

Bozak would be a big upgrade in a 3rd line role over Desharnais.

Sounds like Plekanec...

We have one year left on DD. Why add an average player for a longer period? There are better options out there.

no, no thanks.
Emelin isnt any better than the vets we are currently throwing on the 3rd pairing (hunwick/polak). we need a top 4 D, emelin isnt that.

leafs likely move Bozak for a 2nd and prospect at the deadline

Getting Bozak would imply getting rid of Desharnais, obviously.

Also, the point of having a versatile 3rd line center is precisely to alleviate some of Plekanec's defensive burdens so that he can concentrate on generating offense, starting by getting some more consistent PP minutes and cutting in his PK time.

you think Emelin is a top 4 dman ? that must be a joke right?

Emelin isnt what the leafs want or need. top 4 youngish RHD. he is none of those

Which I'm not a fan of considering Bozak's talent vis-à-vis his cap hit. DD is gone after this year (or maybe even sooner).

There are other options out there. I'd also rather keep Emelin for our physical match-ups.

Wow beside JVR you offer basiclly nothing. I suspect teams are throwing their offers at you...

guy pretty much says those are the guys most likely to be available, but there are very few untouchables.

The Leafs will make the right move when it comes. Most likely we'll trade Bozak to a team needing a 2C or a high end 3C for picks, not for a top 4 defenseman. The others are also more likely to garner picks rather than players as well.

If we are looking at a top 4 defenseman, we are probably looking at JVR or Gardiner, with pluses on either side depending on the player. We'll probably dip into our immense prospect depth if a plus is necessary.

Otherwise, I'm sure the approach will be to draft a high end guy this year and sign someone in FA to hold us over until he's ready. Or just sign Shattenkirk.
