I don't really see the point of ranking guys based on what they could or should do. You just set yourself up for disappointment.
Im going to put lindstrom back for #8 but mcdavid is a lock for top 10 all time to me personally.

Hmm. I think, today, I go with:

Wayne Gretzky (Jan. 1981 to Sept. 1991)
Bobby Orr (c. 1967 to 1976)
Gordie Howe (c. 1950 to 1969)
Mario Lemieux (c. 1985 to 1997... plus 2001)
Connor McDavid (c. 2016 to 2024)
Jaromír Jágr (c. 1995 to 2006)
Jacques Plante (c. 1953 to 1971)
Dominik Hašek (c. 1993 to 2006)
Nicklas Lidström (c. 1993 to 2008)
Jean Béliveau (c. 1951 to 1964)

(Recently, I've started to think Lidström might actually have been better than Bourque.)

Here's my top 10.

1. Gretzky
2. Orr
3. Lemieux
4. Howe
5. Crosby
6. Roy
7. Beliveau
8. Jagr
9. Hasek
10. Ovechkin
11. Bourque
NR - McDavid.

I'm convinced McDavid will slot no lower than #5 eventually (barring some unexpected huge decline/falling off a cliff), but I'm just not sure where to slot him as of today. So - NR seems easier.

I'm confident the top four are Gretzky, Howe, Orr and Lemieux. That's how I have them, but I think a reasonable case can be made for different orders.

The only other names that I'm positive should be in the top ten are Beliveau and Crosby.

McDavid appears to be on track to end up 5th place all-time (assuming a normal career trajectory) - with the potential to end up even higher than that. As of today, I'd have him in the mix for the top ten, but I wouldn't say he must be there.

In chronological order, I think a good case can be made for Morenz, Shore, Richard, Harvey, Hull, Bourque, Roy, Hasek, Jagr, Ovechkin, Lidstrom and McDavid.

Then you get into the next tier (Kelly, Plante, Lafleur, Potvin, Messier etc) - all of whom are great, but I don't see any realistic argument to get them into the top ten.

Maybe this is an unhelpful non-answer. But the reality is there's 10-12 players who have a case for what's essentially six open spots.

(Okay I'll bite - as of today, I'd rank them Gretzky, Howe, Orr, Lemieux, Beliveau, Crosby, Roy, Bourque, Hasek, Hull - but you'll probably get a different answer if you ask me tomorrow).

Criticizing someone’s list without providing one of your own is a weak move.

Gretzky
Orr
Howe
Lemieux
Beliveau
Hull
Crosby
Bourque
McDavid
Harvey

There are a lot of places where I can talk myself into moving some players around, but this is a good estimate of how I feel on average.

That's fair.
Gretzky
Orr
Lemieux
Howe
Big Drop-Off
Roy
Hasek
Beliveau
Hull
McDavid
Richard

Kudos for having Hull in the middle.i feel it's exactly where he belongs. . He doesn't get the respect he deserves in many top 10s

Love the list. Might not have Bourque but there are many right there. I like Plante. Maurice Richard and a few others but it's close enough where I can argue for and against the last guy.
