Too many men on ice penalty question

Was just watching the USA vs GER game and the Germans took a too many men penalty and the US held the puck for over a minute on the delayed penalty. My question is if a team has already taken a too many men penalty and the other team is controlling the puck on the delayed penalty, could the team just leave the extra man out there or would that be an additional penalty? I was thinking just leave that 6th man out there so you can touch up the puck since you're getting called anyway.

Even if this would be possible, the NHL would close immediately that loophole.

As a similar example, consider this:

A call for too many men on the ice in a 5-on-3 situation in the last two minutes of regulation or in overtime now results in a penalty shot. This current rule resulted from Coach Roger Neilson's exploitation of rule loopholes during an OHL game when his team was up one goal, but was down two men in a five-on-three situation for the last minute of the game. Realizing that more penalties could not be served under the existing rules, Neilson put too many men on the ice every ten seconds. The referees stopped the play and a face-off was held, relieving pressure on the defense.

Here are few more of Neilson's cheats ideas:

Sounds like an interesting enough concept to me but I think the above poster explained why it probably can't happen.

Well, until they change the rule it can be done then? Or will it be seen as two infractions? That must be the question.

If there's no additional penalty in this situation you may as well tell every player to go on the ice.

Could a smart ref whistle and issue unsportsmanlike conduct penalty? Seems to fit under that broad category.

The only reason why the other team plays six-on-five now is because the team having to many men, tries to rectify it. Play is sometimes just whistled down because they don't even see they have to many men.

The rule of allowing the other team to play on while they have the puck wasn't meant so they could take massive advantage from the start, was it. It has just turned into that. It was just meant to be, we don't whistle down a splendid attack, cause you don't even want that.

The US just held the puck in their own zone for over a minute in a 2-1 game killing the clock so that Germany had less time to comeback at the end. And they were just letting it happen so I thought just throw that extra man back out there to touch up the puck. I wasn't thinking throw everyone out there, just leave that extra 6th man so it would be 6 on 6.

Yeah, if you hold the puck in your own zone for over a minute I think the refs should issue a penalty for that in itself, but that's just me.

I don’t see why it would provoke a rule change. There’s nothing in the spirit of the penalty that says the offending team has to panic and rush a guy off the ice.

You’ve already taken the 2 minutes, get your money’s worth. It’s like a hooking minor... don’t take the penalty and then put your hands up and watch the guy dance in and score. Take him down and make it worthwhile.

I agree, but the problem with this rationale is that you think you can get away without a penalty. If a penalty is already being called, by all means, make the most of it. Usually that's no the case though.

I think in that scenario they could probably assess a penalty for each additional man...right?

I mean. f***. Now I need to see a team push the limits.

There are two different scenarios here. If Germany had 6 skaters on the ice and noticed the refs arm go up for the call they could certainly leave that guy on the ice to try to touch the puck but if they go him off the ice but it was too late and the ref put his arm up and then they decided to put another player on the ice again I would think the ref would be able to make two too many men on the ice calls in one play. Kind of like how you can get your stick into a players hands/arms and if you see the ref arm go up just give a harder hook and take the guy down but if you get your stick in on a players hands/arm and the refs arm goes up and then 10 seconds later hook the same player or anyone else, you're getting two hooking minors.

Interesting scenario. But MOST (not all) Too Many Men penalties are blown down immediately since they are initiated when the extra man touches the puck. I think it is a rare instance when that isn't the case.

i mean, technically you are correct.

but Im guessing the officials would add an additional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and make it a 5 on 3
