I hate that you use Dawes as an example, because I think he's a perfectly good hockey player who just didn't fit the NHL game well, but I get the point. Plenty of not great players shred the KHL. Some great NHL players are surprisngly pedestrian in the KHL.
I think a lot of it has to do with commitment to the environment and circumstances. I don't disagree that Dawes is a decent player but circumstances like size (especially prior to say, 2012-ish) kept players like him out of the NHL even in bottom-six roles.

However, Dawes never seemed to lack for heart and commitment to the team, so when he went to the KHL and thrived it was because he was ready to play and stay, where others who might have been more skilled always left their hearts and minds in North America. That's my take on it; never saw him play in KHL, just going off his Wikipedia page about how he even became a naturalized Kazakhstani citizen.

Look up Nigel Dawes and be in awe of who can dominate the KHL. 5-foot-9 waiver fodder who never played a full season's worth of games for any one team in his NHL tenure.

True, its a tweener league. Besides Josh Leivo being #1 in scoring with 47 pts in 39 games the other North Americans are in 5th spot - Trevor Murphy a Canadian deeman who played a total of 8 NHL games. In 12th spot is Sheldon Rempal who had 3 pts in 21 NHL games before crossing the pond.

Sergie Zubov dominated the league for two years, old, and on a leg with no ACL.

Should have kept his head straight and mouth wired. DeAngelo could have made a really good career there.
He would have made his millions in the NHL if he was capable of doing just that.

SKA (which should come to the surprise of nobody) is a hot mess

I'm sure DeAngelo has his share of blame, but Rotenberg is an idiot and huge jerk. This is the guy who drove away Michkov and barely plays Demidov.

I know they probably just mean like, sports-related media, but my initial thought was about how Russian media is controlled by the State, so it's actually a State-led takedown campaign... seems hilarious.

... A protest to the league because fans of other teams are shouting mean things?
Don Cherry was right after all, Euros are soft.

What did you expect in a country where every single bit of critisism of the goverment is met with a prison sentence or defenestration? SKA, as in the army team, is an extension of the said goverment, speak against that and it's practically treason already.

He lost his last couple of NHL jobs because his defense was atrocious, wasn’t related to anything off ice.
I think he'd have gotten another chance or two in the NHL if he wasn't both bad defensively and have all the off-ice issues.

Teams looking for buy-low guys aren't gonna want someone that also brings off-ice problems with them.

When someone who's a known locker room cancer like De Angelo or JT Miller claims "family" or "mental health" as an excuse to leave a team, I think it's valid to not simply take their excuses at face value.
Why would SKA lie, lol. I’d agree with your take if it was an excuse to leave an NHL a team, but any American living in Russia right now I would believe any “excuse” they have for coming home.

Vancouver should sign this guy just to up the drama even more. That’s pretty much the only entertainment these guys are providing right now anyways
