Did the Canucks not try to do that?

lekkerimaki's contract was consistent with the players drafted around him. It's not like they have a history of being totally unreasonable with their ELC offers.

It's a story now (and well before Willander had finished his season) because Diamond wanted to turn up the heat, so he put it in Dhaliwals head, then he played the Seravali card (which brought the rest of the info peddlers out of the woodwork to discredit him). He knows how this market works...having just negotiated both of Lankinen's contracts.

It's a story regardless of Dhaliwal. It's an outlier event brought to public attention.

To my knowledge, the Canucks did not offer more in bonuses (commensurate to players of his ilk) and now cannot burn a year off his ELC.

Do people honestly think Willander isn’t signing ?
ATM, yes.

Mgmt is playing hardball on bonuses so not surprised if he and his agent are holding out.

Coupled with the depth on defense now, it’s not a given as to when and where he slots in at the NHL level.

At this point, it’s probably more likely he’s traded for help at forward than signing.

willander really isn't sacrificing much money by not signing now if he thinks he's ahl bound next season. the ahl elc salary is 70k iirc. he stands to make much more than that in bonuses if he maxes out

he also has a ton of leverage next year since he can decide to play his senior year and become a free agent and sign a 2 year elc in august 2027 instead of signing a 3 year elc in 2026 because of his age

i kinda think he's going back as it stands (unless management caves and gives him what he wants)

Did you consider that burning a year wasn't a priority to Willander? Last i heard, both sides were happy to have the contract start in 2025/26....but were stuck on Schedule As. Which kind of makes sense to me. Burning a year is great for a player that has a good chance at putting up impact numbers out of the gate - Hughes/Pettersson types who are going to be top PP unit producers. 2 way defenders may want a little more runway to earn their Schedule A bonuses.

Not burning the year also gave Diamond the option of dragging this on to try and extract more (my bet is they are asking for max A's: $1MM in each year). The temperature in this market is going to go way up over the next 10 weeks as the team has a ton of holes to fill and limited resources...at some point RutherVin might want a positive distraction and just give in.

If we can get a top young centre im all for trading him if he doesn’t wanna resign because it is true we do have a lot of our defensive spots taken up now and if he doesn’t wanna be here then let’s get a young top 6 forward under 25 so we can keep our draft picks this season .

And on the bright side we still have Mynio , Elias Pettersson 2.0, Mancini , Kudryavstev etc .

But I still want the Canucks to sign him , but I understand the business

AHL salary is $82.5k and he'd also get $95K each year as a signing bonus no? and he ain't going to the AHL anyway.

We do want to sign him. Maybe we are waiting to sign him in the off season so he doesn’t get to sign his first year that just lasts for as long as the Abby Canucks last for ? We want him for a full 3 years on his entry level contract similar to what Calgary has been doing.

Don't know much about bonuses, but isn't this a can't lose situation for the canucks? If he is reaching his bonuses, we will have gotten great value from him, even with his bonuses. Canucks management must be pretty sure he is ready to step into a top 4 role right away if they are negotiating so hard on bonuses(allegedly).

Abbotsford has nothing to do with it. He would be ineligible to play for Abbotsford on an ELC because NHL-contracted players can only play in the AHL playoffs if they were on an AHL roster at the trade deadline. The only way that he could play for Abbotsford right now is by signing an ATO for the rest of this season.

Maybe that’s what he wanted to burn that first year.

One more year of school or get paid a million dollars (or more). Tough decision.
Except there is a log jam for the 7 (or 8) D men getting paid NHL salaries.

The smart move is to sign, with an out clause to go play in Sweden if at any time he is sent to the AHL. He definitely can make more playing pro there.

this would not be a good idea IMO. Prioritizing short term earnings potential would be insanely shortsighted and just a bizarre message to send. Does this guy want to develop his game and be an impact NHL player, or is he looking to make an extra 100K next year playing in Europe?

Sooo uhhh Willanders team has come out vis Dhaliwal stating they want to go pro, and if the situations doesn't change their will be available suitors within the next couple years...

Over f***ing bonuses? Are you f***ing kidding me right now? This management group is royally f***ing up. You don't treat your top prospect like this. This is Umberger 2.0

Its set bonuses for entry-level contracts though. There's not much he can ask for. Unless I'm missing something.

he will sign. Its not odd that they are playing hardball, because of their sudden wealth of young defensive talent. You give trader Jim any excess, and he will use it to patch current holes. As such, he is the prime candidate to be dangled for that 2C that management has the hots for. I can see NYI very interested in Willander as a potential cornerstone piece along with Ritchie. Its misguided because he is treating Vancouver like a contender with one last piece away from going over the top. Vancouver is anything but, and Willander is a very good piece of Vancouver's long term future.

Problem with JR blurting everything out is that even casuals can chart what the org is targeting and internal evaluations of their assets. I believe he is as good as gone if someone offers up a decent deal for a 2C.

To me it sounds like Todd Diamond being a little twit. But to each their own.
