If he’s traded because of schedule A bonuses, Allvin starts to fall into Benning-level incompetence.
Benning would have had Willander signed by now.

I find it hard to understand why posters would side with management on this one, a group that really needs a few drama-free wins, over the media who is just reporting that the situation is strange in contrast to other analogous signings around the league.

They had a clear opportunity to announce this deal alongside a Tocchet extension—two easy wins that would have given them a positive boost heading into the offseason. Instead, they’re digging in over Schedule A bonuses and a coaching salary that doesn’t even count against the cap, all in the name of avoiding setting a precedent.

The only way I’d give them a pass is if we hear credible reporting that these stances are being driven by ownership, not management—which still seems like a real possibility.
Well I think Willander and Tocchet should be separate discussions. Getting Willander signed should be easy. There's tons of precedents available including draft position and ASP's contract and we're only just dealing with Schedule A bonuses here. In the end it probably doesn't matter much.

Tocchet is a separate discussion. Regardless of how you feel about it, he's just about the most unaccomplished 3rd time NHL head coach around. NHL salaries aren't exactly public knowledge so I'm not sure how accurate reported figures are. But I think we can all agree that he doesn't deserve Jon Cooper money or even Mike Sullivan money. He doesn't deserve Bednar and Maurice extension money. I don't think he deserves Berube money either. Fact is that many guys reportedly making more money than Tocchet right now have won a Cup. A guy like DeBoer doesn't have a Cup but has a much better track record as an NHL head coach. I think Tocchet is making more money than Montgomery.

These kinds of Dmen are a big question mark. Everyone is expecting him to be a top pair D man but he could end up being slightly worse than D. Petey. We don't know till he's on NHL ice

No Dmen like Willander are safe picks. He's a plus skater, has good size, and there's some offensvie skills. He projects to be top 4 defensemen or safe bet to develop into NHL defensemen. Of course there are many "safe picks" who do bust but I wouldn't say Dmen like Willander are big question marks.

Here is something what I don’t understand, why would Willander even do an interview in Canada in Vancouver on Sportsnet 650 if the contract situation was going that bad.

Like I said before, the tone and answers from him during the Canucks question, I felt uneasy, and obviously I was right now.

And I think we know why now.
maybe he thought that after the season ended, the Canucks would just give what he wanted, because it makes no sense for them being so stingy.

And when the Canucks decided to play hardball still, the agent basically told Vancouver to f*** off, and the Canucks are holding the line.

Again, this is just speculation, but this is just absolutely crazy to start a relationship like this with your top prospect, you might as well just go and trade him now before his value starts to drop next season because he goes to Sweden, or back to college for another year.

It’s a complete shit show once again, and it’s Canucks related, especially with all the multiple reports that this is over a stupid a or B bonuses.

Yea, I’d say everything about him screams NHL quality defenseman. The skating, size, IQ and positioning seem to be there. How good he is at adjusting to NHL speed/decision making and how much he contributes offensively will determine where that is, but for a prospect I think he’s more of a high floor/good ceiling type than a boom or bust guy.

I'm told that Tom Willander (VAN) has left Boston University and returned home to Stockholm. This doesn't necessarily conclude the negotiations to have him join Abbotsford for their AHL playoff run.

May 1st is last day of BU classes and exams start May 5th 🤨

edit:

The Tom Willander saga continues with the Canucks. Willander has left Boston College University and returned to Sweden where he will join the Swedish national team on Tuesday and play in upcoming exhibiton games for them.

Plus isnt there a chance he plays for Team Sweden in some capacity instead? Thats been my dark place in the back of my mind that could drag this out even more for awhile now.

When do the world championships start again?

This has always been my one worry of dragging this out.

Whats national team is that same as world championships like I mentioned a week ago?

Gonna reserve commenting until Willander himself or the Canucks make a statement. No point speculating on something we have no inside information on.

He missed the window to burn a year here. He may have wanted to play for Sweden over the AHL. If that's the case you can't blame him. I don't see the rift as anything bit useless speculation too.

Buium is playing his first NHL game tonight for the Wild.

Willamder could absolutely be good enough. Getting some exhibition games in to try to earn that chance is fine. May also suggest why there is no rush in getting a deal done before the season ended.

Here are some crazy questions...

Does anyone know what classes he was taking, when the courses end and when the exams are?

What if a lot of the discussions between the Canucks and his team are about how much time he spends in the AHL vs his entry-level NHL deal?

What if this is all about Cellibrini and he is a secret super spy/agent who's only goal is to ensure Macklin joins the Canucks ASAP?

Not sure about exam dates but he’s taking arts and science.

The point is, no one is saying "he's not going to sign!" It is not disaster-mongering to note that it's a bit unusual that it wasn't done quickly, as it almost always is. Drance explained what he understands the hold-up to be, and is met here with "Drance is making things up for clicks!"

What else do you call that? Who is actually scare-mongering there?
Yup.

Nothing against Willander, but I don't see how he could hit any of these bonuses on this team. So what are they really arguing about ?
+/- and all rookie team he could easily make.

Anyone who is thinking this is business as usual is out to lunch.

These bonuses are easily worth it for the Canucks just to build a good relationship with the player. Playing hardball here is stupid.

Do I think he will eventually sign? Absolutely.

But lets not pretend this is jus "evil vancouver media demons trying to make us feel bad for clicks."

From whats reported (by the evil media) he absolutely was willing to sign and go to AHL.

I'll say it again. There is no pressure to sign Willander right now. If the player wants the A bonuses, he/agent will wait. The team is coming up on some big decisions at the draft and in free agency in order to acquire top 6 talent. I don't think they want to trade Willander but there is absolutely no down side to waiting to see how things play out.
It seems the only thing driving the angst here is the impatience of the fan base.

Impatience is driven by expectation, and expectation is set here by analogous cases around the league (as @Jack Tripper correctly points out).

The pressure to sign Willander is to conduct business as usual. This is not business as usual, hence the story.

As to potentially trading him for top6 talent: Short of an absolute home run, please no.

Yah I think there’s no urgency from Canucks side because he’s getting traded for a top 6 forward. If he signed with the Canucks he would be playing 10 mins a game as the 6th D, there’s no room right now in right side unless you’re a specialized heavy hitter defenceman.

It's clear management is going to move him for a center. I think they'll move EP2 to the right side to fill the spot Willander would have taken eventually. Willander to Buffalo for Helenius perhaps?

I’m now more and more convinced the most likely route management has chosen go in is to use TW to strengthen the top 6…

What we all know: Our ‘D’ has become the team strength and there is the obvious glaring hole(s) in the top 6.

I’m sure they don’t want to give him up, but they also think trading him hurts the team on the ice the least next season (and we all know next season is always pretty much the only thing that really matters around here).

I think Willander is going to be a really solid top 4 NHL d-man for a long time…

…but I wonder if they were expecting his offensive and/or breakout game to develop more when they drafted him hoping because of his late transition to playing d there was a lot more room for development in those aspects, and that they haven’t seen as much improvement as they’d hoped when he was picked.

I also wonder if that’s why they are playing hardball here:
they don’t want to set a precedent of caving in on their internal structure for the bonuses for a guy they see as likely to be traded away as that will effect future negotiations with our first round picks (assuming of course we ever make and sign a 1st round pick again)…

…also possibly why they aren’t too concerned with straining the relationship with him by playing hardball.

The hockey season is still 100% continuing for the organization. There should be some type of urgency to see him play pro hockey in a playoff environment in Abby…

…unless they already have a very good idea of what other GM’s think of Willander (and what his value is) and it just isn’t worth it for them to play him in case he underperforms or gets injured.
Great post.

I don't mind moving Willander because he's not the type of prospect that's going to boom and make you really regret it. He's a low ceiling/high floor type of prospect. With his skillset, he's almost assuredly going to be a 20 minute top 4 defenseman that can play on the PK and maybe a PP2 unit.

In almost all trade talks, the GMs are probably asking for Willander as RD is probably the most coveted position behind center.

Willander had 2 goals and 5 points to start his first 5 games of the season. Looked like a breakout year but that didn't end up happening. This was supposed to be his year to be PP1 QB and Cole Hutson came out of no where to take that job. Cole ended up with 14 goals, 48 points in 39 games.

When Willander was drafted, Hronek only played 4 games for us at that point. It's been 2 full years since the pick was made. Since then, these things have transpired:

- Hronek has established himself as a legitimate #2D
- Acquired a legit top four defenseman in Marcus Pettersson
- Acquired a 22 year old RD with some real NHL upside (8 points in 31 games)
- Emergence of DPetey - can play both sides and looks better game by game... he JUST turned 21, insane growth in a short amount of time
- Myers continues to play some of his best and most consistent hockey for us despite turning 35 - he wants to stay and can likely still be an effective contributor on the right side for another 2-3 years
- Emergence of Sawyer Mynio and Kirill Kudryavstev - both prospects (albeit on the left side) are rapidly rising amongst the prospect group)... especially Kudryavstev... 26 points in 65 games in his rookie year in the A, looked good in his call-up too.... only 21

At the time of the pick, Willander made a lot of sense, but with all the things that have happened in between... the D core is a legit strength of this team. Haven't even brought up viable options in the A like a McWard, Hirose, Wolanin, Woo, Briesbois. This defense is really 10-12 guys deep right now.

I think this organization putting Junior on the right side is so intriguing. Usually you wouldn't make a 21 year old rookie play on their off-side (in the midst of a playoff hunt no less). The fact that there's not really a drop-off in play on either side makes him so valuable. The combination of size, physicality and skating ability is so rare. I think DPetey is ahead of Willander right now and might be our #1 prospect.

The easiest part to stomach, when it comes to trading Willander, is that he won't be a high producing offensive dman/gamebreaker at the NHL level. He doesn't have the puck skills, offensive IQ and shooting ability for that archetype of a player. If he hits, his high-end comp is probably like a Jonas Brodin.

Willander's definitely an ace in our sleeves. The UFA market is not good but if Willander is available, I think there would be many attractive top six pieces available. I know Buffalo would never say yes but a Kulich for Willander swap would be amazing for us. Kulich is going to be a really good top six center for the next decade.

Yea. We have all summer to get something done with him. Also I think because there are lack of anything happening to the Canucks so our hacks have to write something stories up.
