Benning would have had Willander signed by now.If he’s traded because of schedule A bonuses, Allvin starts to fall into Benning-level incompetence.
Well I think Willander and Tocchet should be separate discussions. Getting Willander signed should be easy. There's tons of precedents available including draft position and ASP's contract and we're only just dealing with Schedule A bonuses here. In the end it probably doesn't matter much.I find it hard to understand why posters would side with management on this one, a group that really needs a few drama-free wins, over the media who is just reporting that the situation is strange in contrast to other analogous signings around the league.
They had a clear opportunity to announce this deal alongside a Tocchet extension—two easy wins that would have given them a positive boost heading into the offseason. Instead, they’re digging in over Schedule A bonuses and a coaching salary that doesn’t even count against the cap, all in the name of avoiding setting a precedent.
The only way I’d give them a pass is if we hear credible reporting that these stances are being driven by ownership, not management—which still seems like a real possibility.
Tocchet is a separate discussion. Regardless of how you feel about it, he's just about the most unaccomplished 3rd time NHL head coach around. NHL salaries aren't exactly public knowledge so I'm not sure how accurate reported figures are. But I think we can all agree that he doesn't deserve Jon Cooper money or even Mike Sullivan money. He doesn't deserve Bednar and Maurice extension money. I don't think he deserves Berube money either. Fact is that many guys reportedly making more money than Tocchet right now have won a Cup. A guy like DeBoer doesn't have a Cup but has a much better track record as an NHL head coach. I think Tocchet is making more money than Montgomery.
These kinds of Dmen are a big question mark. Everyone is expecting him to be a top pair D man but he could end up being slightly worse than D. Petey. We don't know till he's on NHL ice
No Dmen like Willander are safe picks. He's a plus skater, has good size, and there's some offensvie skills. He projects to be top 4 defensemen or safe bet to develop into NHL defensemen. Of course there are many "safe picks" who do bust but I wouldn't say Dmen like Willander are big question marks.
