Prospect Info: Tom Willander: 11th Overall 2023 Draft (Rogle BK J20) - Part 02

From my watch this game:
Willander gets the Marcus Pettersson deployment & some token 2nd PP time. While Cole Hutson gets the Quinn Hughes deployment i.e. ALL the real offensive opportunities.
In addition to that, Willander plays very conservatively (probably out of necessity since he's the only steady D) so it's VERY low event when he's on the ice. It's a wonder he has as many points as he does.
Unlike M.Pettersson though, Willander doesn't make any mistakes. Cornell hasn't gotten any scoring opportunities with Willander on the ice, even on the PP, cause Willander shuts everything down and gets everything out of the zone.

Celebrini...meh. Looks like just another guy and got burned on the 2nd tying Cornell goal.

Wallinder, if the Canucks want any offense from him down the line will need to allow him time in the A to develop that part of his game. Needs to work on his puck skills with a skills coach.

That's a perfect description of the game
Hutson McCarthy starts the game and gets a scoring chance, then are treading water getting destroyed for 2 minutes defending

Willander comes on after a whistle and is defending but no shots on goal he's just erasing possession.

Even the announcers said "Willander is so calming on the ice"

The tweet is significant, Rick only talks through agents, what kind of leverage play is this, he’s getting maximum whatever anyway, this makes me think he doesn’t wanna stay here

It really really really isn’t. All it is the agent trying to mute discussion a little. He’s either signing after the season for what a typical #11 gets or reports to the AHL with slightly higher than normal bonuses.

No reason for concern at all.

I'm not concerned with Willander not signing at all. A top Swedish hockey prospect doesn't move away from Sweden to play NCAA hockey with the intention of getting a college degree or becoming a UFA in 4 years. Plus Willander isn't projected to put up big offensive numbers. The odds of him reaching many of his performance bonuses are low.

I agree. His bonuses that he could hit per the cba would be for ice time. Which is fine as the better he is the more the HC would play him.

He would burn an elc year when he signs. But for him there is no guarantee of a roster spot next season.

There are few better situations for Willander now that Desharnais' contract is gone. The RD spot is his to take and he potentially plays with Hughes, D-Petey or M-Petey.

The current Canuck options on the right side, are Hronek, Myers and Mancini.....although lately Tocchet has experimented with EP25 on his off-side.

So if Wilander shows anything, then there would appear to a spot for him on the NHL roster. But since the Frozen Four tournament doesn't start until April 10th......we'll probably have to wait until next season to find out.
