Prospect Info: Tom Willander: 11th Overall 2023 Draft (Rogle BK J20) - Part 02

2 games left and burning a year would be insane from management

i know he is 10.2 status if he plays a game.
but with OEL's buyout for 4.7 for the next 2 years and 2 after that.

give him an AHL contract

Now that offer sheets are in vogue again and the cap is on the rise, it may make a lot of sense to burn that year just to ensure another team doesn't try to pry him away.

If you opt to play the short game to maximize the ELC, he may hold that against the club on the RFA contract and go bridge and be gone after 6 seasons. May be better to just play the long game with him by burning the year.

Seems like a weird thing to jump up and down about. The incoming players get a taste of the life and a cheque. Some fans get enraged like that it is they who are scratching the cheque. It builds good will moving forward for the team and the player. A tough concept it seems for some......

And like Nuckles mejtioned it could impact the second contract in more ways than one.

Some people can't see the forest for the trees. He could tell them that he isn't interested in 26/27..... then what?

I could see that if they give him a better contract than he gets in the NHL? Is that allowed. Either way, this is your top prospect in your system. You don't try to lever him for pennies.

From every thing I can find on line, they could reward him with an AHL salary of say $2.5M. So what happens if they bring him up for a game or 2 in the playoffs. What if next year they want to sign him to the obligated ELC. Can they just waive the AHL salary.

Edit 2 - just to be clear, the whole point is to make sure that Willander isn't treated like he is not a very highly valued asset. They should do what ever they can to make him fell like he is highly valued.

Edit - every thing I can find says that this is a way to navigate through the rules. Willander is a top prospect. Give him a ridiculous AHL salary, then when its time for him to play in the NHL, whether its this year or next year, give him the best ELC you can.

And we are in ridiculous range on D right now.

Hughes Hronek
MP EP2
Forbert Myers
Willander Mancini

Forbert is producing insane numbers on penalty killing. Mancini is looking great. EP2 is off the charts in terms of meeting expectations.

We probably need to trade an asset to help with the need for a C. But for FFS I don't want to trade any of them ... I guess Mancini is likely the odd man out.

just saw the breakdown this morning of the game

Gavin McCarthy led all players on both teams in ice time despite being absolutely caved in (not surprising) and was on the ice for every goal

Willander 2nd in TOI, good expected goals, and great defensive numbers from his pairing
Just solid numbers

I watched that entire game and he was... call it efficient.

Watch about 2 periods of each of the other 4 games and dang there really wasn't anybody who flashed anything to me. The NCAA free agent crop this year is very weak.

That's what you hope is efficient. He's not going to have crazy underlying numbers, but you hope for efficiency

I think when Craig Button is saying that he reminds of McAvoy, that gets fans pulse racing. I never saw that. To me he's always been mostly Hronek. That's good, great actually if he becomes another Hronek.
