Have any of you heard about this guy? I learned about him in one of my groups today. I battle with skitzophrenia and the struggle gets really hard sometimes. Are there any prospects or any hockey players you know of that have this?

Heard he committed suicide from depression and the illness, really sad.

Wow, that's really sad. I hadn't heard about it until now.

I wish you the best with your battle, Sabred.

I think theres probably some other players who have these type of illnesses but arent open with them.

I knew a guy in the MJHL who had it he just didnt tell anyone and managed it without any problems. Was adamantly against drugs and alcohol

i never heard of him until now and it is sad . it isn't suprising that he hide the mental illness from friends and teammates since it is common for people to not want to talk about having mental illness. i have had depression for years and for a long time i couldn't talk about it but now i can.

Hadn't heard about him, inspirational story. Everyone has their demons, and I'm no different. All the best Sabred; mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. I know I'm a total stranger, but I'm here if you ever need an ear :)

Unfortunately the side effects of antipsychotic medications aren't that compatible with being a professional athlete at the highest level

Best of luck to you Sabred. It's a shame Tom wasn't able to find his way through it. Any form of mental illness can be debilitating.

Hey Sabred, thats rough to hear about your mental illness. schizophrenia is a hard illness to deal with but it can be dealt with properly! Keep your head up man

Thanks for the support folks

Best of luck to you. My brother-in-law was diagnosed with it at 16, 30 years ago. Thanks to medicine (and sobriety), he's been able to start a successful business that he and my sister have run for 15 years, has 2 great kids and is a helluva role model. Having a great support group around you is so important, hopefully you either have that or can seek it out.

I've battled depression in the past, it's not fun but talking to people can make a world of difference. Sad to hear about Cavanaugh and Sabred best wishes to you in your battle.

Check your private messages, I might be able to help you with your problem. :)

Somewhat OT, but one guy I know about who has schizophrenia is Nick Blinko. He is from the punk band Rudimentary Peni and they are awesome. They go back to the early 80s. I think this guy is one of the primary songwriters, plus he does the artwork on the liner notes. Very, very creative.

I've heard of Tom Cavanagh too. I remember seeing he was point per game in 07-08. Just a single game there but still.
