I know a lot of people are down on Johansen, but I really feel like CMac has turned the corner this off-season.

He’s making a lot of intelligent moves and doing a lot of work without many assets. He’s earning back my trust. Getting a core piece locked into a good contract adds to that.

I do think they’ll have to move a defenceman next off-season though. Between Manson, Byram, and Girard. Not sure who it’ll be, but Toews is locked in, so it will be one of the other guys getting moved out.

Well I hate it for the cap implications is means going forward, but right now Toews is one of the best D in the league. He took a discount for sure.

This is going to hurt starting next year when we're icing 6-8 fantastic players and 7 AHL vets.

Honestly at $7.25M I dont think its going to hurt all that much.

It definitely wont hurt next year. He was the only guy we really needed to re-up for next summer. If the cap jumps by $4M like the league is forecasting, that jump covers Toews deal entirely and still leaves an extra $850k for the team to work with.

Where it might start to hurt will be when Mikko's next deal kicks in. But we'll just have to wait and see what those numbers end up looking like at that point.

Toews at $7.25M is very manageable though IMO. Its a great deal for a borderline Top 10 Dman in the league.

Two things can be true. You can be down on Johansen (I'm not, at least yet), and still realize it was a very clever bet by CMac who had limited options and assets to spend. About as good of a move as you can make. Same with Drouin, a smart reclamation project.

They might not end up working, but we didn't really have a ton of options and these were pretty well excecuted IMO.

This is the type of deal that can keep us competitive for awhile, he's an absolute workhorse who gets overshadowed by the other stars on the team. It's also nice seeing a genuine discount where he easily could have had almost every team in the league look to pay him more.

Exciting day, losing him for nothing would've been an enormous blow. Will be interesting to see how the rest of the roster decisions shake out now.

To be honest, I always thought he would stay. If they knew he wanted change, he would have been traded because his value was high and we are not in position to lose assets for free. Defenseman of his quality are hard to find.

If Byram was ascending like he looked like he would in his rookie season, maybe they could’ve let Toews walk, but the Avs might not be convinced he can become a Toews level player.

They’re in a 3 year window here where they want to win another cup and they’re trying to mitigate risk imo.

Going with Cale Makar and Devon Toews as your 1-2 on D moving forward is an easy choice. They might have to choose between G and Bo as the 3 at some point.

Or we can trade Girard for picks/prospects, sign a 3rd pairing D for ~2M and ice literally the exact same team minus Girard next season?

Awesome deal! Happy he's sticking around for a long time. Avs can't win with this core without him. We lose him and the window probably shuts immediately.

G or Manson will have to go probably at some point, but that's fine.
