I think that's a solid move. More than a one year situation and not something so long term it can't be terminated if the wheels fell off. I think Coach Richards has done a very solid job handling veterans and young players alike.

At first glance, I thought it was weak on the term. But, given that he has a year remaining on his last deal, it's a perfect extension.

Congratulations, Coach Richards:handclap::handclap: You earned it.

You had best be making better than Jarred Boll:laugh:

I agree. He still does some things I don't like, but players play hard for him and that is one of, if not the most, important things for a NHL coach.

It is the most important thing, and that's why this extension is a no-brainer.

Inevitable. Good for him. Still not sold on him, but I'm fine with a couple more years.

Where'd that "Fire Richards" thread go...?

Congrats, coach ... well deserved. For the first time in our history, we have an identity. I think we owe a huge part of that to Todd Richards.

It is so rare in pro sports to have a coach survive a management change especially someone like Richards who basically was on, what I would dub, an "interim contract extension" in 2012-2013. I'm glad to see his results are getting rewarded and change wasn't made just so Davidson and co could bring in "their guy".

I was a little worried that the term would end up being longer when Jarmo was talking about locking Richards up long-term. I don't have an issue with a 2-year extension. Congrats, HCTR.

I assume the rest of the coaching staff got similar extensions?

Good move and congrats to Coach Richards. There many coaches whose first tenure was not successful then came back to learn from that first job and do well the second time around.

I'd prefer 1 year at a time still, but I suppose that is not realistic at this point.

Like the term. Interesting that GMJK more or less handles the coach and the young players the same way - relatively short terms.

The lone exception seems to be Horton so far, although I expect Johansen to be closer to Horton in term than say,, Calvert..

From Puckrakers:

This is about the relationship between Richards and the front office:

http://bluejacketsxtra.dispatch.com/content/blogs/puck-rakers/2014/05/all-together-now.html

I found this to be interesting:

" ... I evaluate the coaches to some extent the same way I evaluate the players, just by interacting with them," Kekalainen said. "Often (Ricahrds) and I start our day by having a coffee and talking about last night's game, or the previous practice, and we go up and down the lineup with who's playing well and who isn't.

"Right from the start when I came here, I tried to do that with Todd and the rest of the coaching staff, just interacting with them everyday and finding out what they're doing and what their habits are, what kind of people they are."

I've often wondered how closely the GM and coaches work during the day to day operations.

That is the sign of a good GM if you ask me. Someone who interacts with his coaches and players on a regular basis. You need to know more than the stats or even what they do on the ice to truly evaluate a player or coach, IMO. This can lead to a better "fit" or team chemistry.

I can't say he didn't earn it but I wonder how much Bob helped him earn this extension??

I would have waited to see if he could make the playoffs twice in a row... If Bob falls apart and the Jackets miss the playoffs next season he will be fired..

Todd Richards is not that good imo folks but I've been wrong before, roughly around 15% of the time as far as the CBJ are concerned...

Oh. I suppose Richards and Ian Clark, a Richards staffman, haven't done anything to help Bob earn his Vezina.

Coaches rarely ever coach under 'lame duck' years. They need stability too.

My favorite of the 15% (Its much higher, as is most of ours) was the Boone Jenner thing
