Without getting into a big preamble and essay, it's safe to say most Habs fans are disappointed by the state of the 24-25 season in terms of both results and performances. Gallagher, Suzuki, and Hutson are the only players really impressing - and they're all smart players who make good decisions on the ice. Newhook (4pts in 20gp, -11), Dach (8pts in 20gp, -15), Dvorak (7pts in 20gp, -7), and Armia (9pts in 20gp, -8) are all leaned on plenty but have not stepped up.

I think it's time for MSL and the organization to put their money where their mouths are and start to reward effort before reputation. This means making an example bad efforts in order to dispel the low-effort, losing culture we're fomenting. We're in the thick of a rebuild and have deadweight on the roster and don't have sufficient talent, yes, and we're de facto tanking, yes, which means there is nothing more to lose by losing games.

I don't like benching players mid-game, it hurts the whole team and embarrasses a player, but scratching those who don't put the right effort in a game is a reward for another player who wants to play and build his career.

After the Vegas game, it's time to scratch Kirby Dach and give him a mental hard reset. They can couch it to the media with the legitimate excuse that he's coming back from a major injury yada yada yada.

I'm finding Newhook is far more competitive than a lot of our top forwards.
Replace Dach with Newhook on PP1 as well as on the first line.
Something I suggested a while back I believe he can turn it around long before Dach will be able to.

Yes! The guy is broken, like Patch after the Chara hit, except he doesn't even score. He needs a wake up call.

I would also just put him at C, maybe on the bottom 6. He's as useless at center as he is on the wing, but the slim chance that he ever becomes a top 6 player would be much more impactful at C, where his regression has created a big hole.

Newhook and Anderson haven't been productive, but at least they hustle and they try hard. I see the commitment and constant effort in them, whereas Dach .....

Indeed, Dach needs hard reset. Give him 1-2 weeks of vacation, go to a resort in South ?

Why isn’t this in the Kirby Dach thread?
No I think this is a good discussion to have in general, maybe just change the thread title to '... leave players....'. Dach is just the spring board for a discussion, ReHabs even mentions other players in his original post.

If we are talking about effort and players not moving their feet then Slafkovsky is the most egregious offender by a wide margin......should we bench him?

Dach is definitely tentative and I don't like his body language at times but he at least has an excuse whereas Slafkovsky's tenacious forecheck from the final 40 games of last season has not been anywhere to be seen this year. He isn't even really trying to carry the puck and immediately defers to teammates as soon as he touches it. Slaf has been benched multiple times and you have to wonder how long before he is in the press box for a stint......or even Laval if it continues for too long. I think he needs a kick in the ass and is just way too comfortable with his new contract.

I don't see the point of benching a player for more than 1 game. If 1 game doesn't do it then more games won't. If the coaches are telling Dach he has to make more of an effort on the boards and he isn't doing it 1 game should get through. It's possible they are giving him time to get going and hoping he will get over fear of another injury. I wouldn't give him more than 10 more games though.

Could be an injury but i doubt they would have benched him if that was the case unless they are just trying to manage his minutes until he is closer to 100%.

Funny how Kenny Boi's 2 prized acquisitions have the worst +/- and are completely putrid. Good job, Kenny! Can we start questioning Hughes at this point? Because really... how is he different from MSL? Also ZERO experience. Can talk a good game. Zero results. Team is regressing. Prospects, even those who presumably have some promise, are not supported. Zero accountability on the ice, from behind the bench, from the office. And honestly... people are saying habs have a good pipeline, but do they really? Do we have a #1 center in the pipeline? Do we have a #1 D in the pipeline? Do we have rugged 3rd and 4th liners who can make Habs tough to play against? HOw about 1st and second liners who can make Habs to play against?

This rebuild is a waste of time and will bring Habs to nowhere, because it is not done by the right people.

I'd never sign Dach to an extension. Be worst contract in Montreal history. Way he floats. Blindly passed the puck across the ice on Vegas 2nd goal. Half hearted effort all game. Evans beat him out of his 2nd line center spot

When you have to put your 4th line Center on your second line because two acquisitions (both former 1st round picks) aren't competent enough to slot in that spot, you have serious issues.

Here
There is some sulking going around the forward group right now, and it’s Dach and Slaf that show plenty of it. I don’t get it, it’s not like their spots are being challenged or anything. They just feel moody and unwilling to go that extra step to compete for a puck or to create something out of nothing. Just work and you’ll get plenty of rope.

I don’t like it one bit. They have the leeway to work through it. Guys like Gally and Andy aren’t sulking like last season, even though they know they won’t be getting the top 6 minutes they once were.

I’m keeping an eye on Newhook too. I don’t have the same expectations for him so I can just flip the switch easily on Newhook but he’s close to being an afterthought.

I think Dach being (1) older, (2) culturally Canadian, (3) less productive, and (4) has a built-in excuse of injury rehab makes him the clear choice for a punitive scratch with fewer downside risks (media, morale, etc).

No lies detected but there was this guy on this forum who was really excessive in his criticism of how Slafkovsky was handled and he shitted up discussions… so now there’s an inbuilt bias in favour of Slafkovsky here which won’t be easily overcome :sarcasm:

Worst part about this is that we probably have guy's who would be a lot more competitive on the farm team but calling them up probably means that they will start regressing as soon as MSL puts his hand on them.

What this team needs is a new an better approach.....time to change the coaching staff.

Forget the scratch I wouldn't want a guy like that anywhere near my young players. Just waive him and hope someone picks him up.

Sit Slaf until they beat the idea into his head that shooting on net is not just for everyone else but him.
Would be great but Slaf has one of the slowest releases in the NHL. He can't shoot.

you could take out Slaf, Armia, Dach, Dvorak and nobody would notice.

To me it seems Dach is afraid to get injured again, you don't get over that sitting out. Keep playing him and hopefully he gets over it.
