My plan was always to make it to Final Jeopardy an bid an excessively large negative number and intentionally get it wrong. Because you got it wrong they have to subtract what you bid, and what happens when you subtract a negative from a negative.....it becomes a positive so you should gain that excessively high number. And here is the beauty, final jeopardy allows you to bid up to what you have won, bus since the negative number is technically below your total you can far exceed what is possible for the other person to double up on.

I think they count any negative number you would write down as 0. I'm sure someone would have thought of that one by now.

Coach = Me.

Coach: You're up.
THC: Mathematics isn't really my thing coach.
Coach: Spoken like a true champion. You might just make the team.
THC: Reallllly?!?!?
Coach: Jeeeeeesuuuuuus Christ.

And scene!

Oh and by the way, it took me all day to say something that might not get me warning points. Because you're either a ****ing genius or...I think we know the answer here.

Talk during the categories you don't know, so no one can hear/answer. Then clean up the categories you do know.

Shouting an answer, loudly, every time is bush league

 mathematically speaking it would work, but unfortunately jeopardy's rules state that you can't bid a negative number. it automatically gets put to a zero. And while that quote is a good one i always preferred this out (and got away with using it on here).

Thank you for your good humor but...

1+ 0 = 1
1 + 1 = 2
1 + -1 = 0

-1 minus -1 = -2

Get it?

Now -1 TIMES a -1 equals a positive. But they don't apply a natural plus minus to your score to make it equal. If you bet negative and are negative then that is just another negative but in a greater amount.

Oh and P.S. being good at Jeopardy is far more dependent on being educated than smart. And it is kinda sad that any of you said that in the first place. You commenters are smart (cough, cough Yubbers!) . Education doesn't end with k-12 or college. It is a life long pursuit. Get better. :P

Bolded part: -1 minus -1 = 0 enter it into your calculator and see.

Your equation is wrong when you subtract a negative number it acts the same as if it were an addition equation.

Example: Lets say I have 200 going into Final Jeopardy. I make a bid of -5000 and get the question wrong.

200 - (-5000) = 5200

Yes education is a life long process as you have said. As an educator I agree with this statement. But a refresher in the basics are sometimes required. I have a hat for you after class.

Well, at least you have chosen your future attire. I hope you wear it proudly. I would really hope that you would have good enough sense to resign your post as an educator, unless you are teaching finger painting, because you are unqualified.

I'll make it simple for you...You've spent too much this month and your bank account is a $0 balance. Now, your bank then hits you with its monthly fee of $15 dollars. Leaving you with a -$15 dollar balance. THEN your car payment comes up for $750 and it is directly withdrawn from your account. What happens then? Does your account end up with a net gain of $735.00? Or is your account balance now - $765.00.

A negative plus a negative is a negative. End of story.

Yes but that's not what he's doing. He's doing a negative subtract a negative

Say he's got -100. He bets -100... He gets it wrong... that's -100 MINUS (cause he got it wrong) what he bet (-100). So -100 - (-100). He ends up at 0.

Slightly off topic, but one of my pet peeves is how most of the contestants have no idea how to properly wager if they're in 2nd or 3rd place going into Final Jeopardy. Too many people either bet everything or some arbitrary amount (like omg, I'll have 10,000 exactly if I get it right even though I'll only take $2,000 home for finishing in 2nd).

We are not adding a negative, what part of that can't you get through your head! Jeopardy adds OR subtracts based on whether you answer right or wrong. If you are right they add what ever the question is worth or you bid in final jeopardy/daily double. If you are wrong they subtract. Where your American education failed you I don't know but that is the simple premis of the show. Now if you bet a Negative number like -1000 and get it wrong the equation would be what ever you had (let's say 500) minus the negative number. So:

500 - (-1000) = 1500

This is math it is black and white, no matter how confused your uneducated mind is this is fact.

Here is a resource we share with grade 4 students when they start learning about integers, do yourself (and the world) a favor and review this simple material.

It is the addition to which we are arguing about THC. Alex says the contestants Final Jeopardy bet will be ADDED to their score before.

FYC. If you weren't such a cute little boy, I might be offended.
