Totally saw that coming. Definitely did not say he looked in over his head early in the year when he was spot starting with Petr out. Noooooooo sir I would not have done that

Honestly, I mostly kept my mouth shut about goaltending this offseason besides saying that I really liked Kuemper and Gibson, and that Fleury would've been an interesting buy-low bet at the right draft pick price (looking at Fleury's current Vezina bid, you can see that Vegas made a great move keeping him and not salary-dumping him for a 1st). After the Francis regime botched the goalie position season after season, Waddell/Yorke/Tulsky came in and found Mrazek, McBackup, and Reimer, in that order, off of essentially the garbage can and got some of the better overall goaltending that our franchise has seen since prime Cam Ward. Eventually, I figured out that I knew nothing and that standing pat was probably the right move if that's what this FO decided.

assuming they don't blow it tonight, dallas is 3 points out with four games in hand. they also have a positive goal differential. the fight for the fourth spot is going to be interesting.

They have 4 straight against Detroit coming up.

That’s big in its own right, but especially huge because Dallas has a downright brutal schedule down the stretch. I think they have 2 games against Chicago in there, but otherwise their whole schedule is against the playoff teams.

We have kind of an opposite scenario. Our next 4 are against FLA/TBL which will go a long way to deciding the division. After that, it’s quite possible that we only have 2 games left against a team who’s not hopelessly out of it already (depending how the 4th place race pans out).

Don’t forget to add two in Dallas after Florida trip. This is a particularly challenging road trip with 6 tough games and for the front and back pair, we go back to back.

I don’t know about everyone else but I would settle for a split (and getting TT back).

5v5 scoring has rightly been recognized as a concern. Since March 1st, the team is 22nd in 5v5 GF/60 (Link).

5v5 team defense + goaltending deserves recognition the other way. Over that same time frame, they're 2nd in 5v5 GA/60.

Skjei and Pesce have gone into lockdown mode at 1.32 and 1.17 (!) GA/60 respectively in that sample (Link).

How much of the 5-on-5 scoring naturally balances out, though, with the ebbs and flows of power plays? That'll be the key question, I guess, if/when we match up against Tampa in the playoffs (fingers crossed).

On a side note...Rangers fans used to say all the time that "SkJeI iS tErRiBlE dEfEnSiVeLy"...it makes you wonder what was going on in New York.
