Post-Game Talk: Time to cut the moustache

Listening to GYB and I see the headline of the video is "Open Season in the Oilers Crease" so I think, oh finally their group is going to address the goaltending concerns, and instead it's Rishaug going on a rant about why the team didn't pound the Stars players after Skinner got bumped a few times and that's the big issue with this team. O....k
Strudwick and Rishaug have gone full Minister of Disinformation. Ekholm who has been a warrior and a star 8 nights out of ten since coming to the team? Throw that guy under the bus. Nurse? Bouchard? Throw those f***ers under the bus too. Skinner, who has been an absolute shitshow in at least half of his starts all season long? Defend that guy like he’s your own son. Never say anything worse than ‘you’d probably like a save there’.

Old Struddy must have forgot what an awful defender he was. Guy was so bad that he was afraid to pursue a puck into a corner because he knew damn well he didn’t have the mobility to get back to the front of the net after he got walked. He’d just stand off to the side of the net waving his stick and hoping for the best. This guy couldn’t carry Bouchard’s jock. Never mind Nurse or Ekholm.

I’ve had it with that podcast. Tell the truth or get off the air.

To play devil’s advocate, Bowman didn’t have a bad deadline. Made good trades and other than the first for Walman, didn’t give away the store.

Getting a Goalie was problematic due to the cap, and the lack of goalies on the trade market. Give quality assets for a guy like Mrazek and a second team to eat cap wasn’t going to move the needle.

None of us like this guy due to past history both as a GM and the coverup, but maybe judge him for the moves he makes.

This summer and the offer sheets are solely on Jackson.

Fans were talking about acquiring someone like Blackwood all season.

Management and the press kept shutting the idea down. I think even the press eventually came around to the idea that Skinner is just having a bad season. Even by his standards.

This narrative has to die. There wasn’t a trade market for goalies because we were the only playoff team that had a need. And our brilliant management refused to acknowledge our weak tending. There were numerous middle of the road options to at least shore up some depth and that quite frankly could have been upgrades on our shaky goalies. Bowman just didn’t try. And guess what, if you don’t go looking you don’t find options.

Bowman had an entire season to address needs.

He didn't address them. The board kept saying "Well just wait and see what he does at the TDL" and he added like... one half-decent player. Is the narrative now "wait until the offseason to see what he does"? He spent all year accruing cap space and then didn't use it.

If the team wins the Stanley Cup then fine, all is forgiven. But if they fail to win it he and Jackson should be fired immediately and the front office should be cleaned out.

Do you remember the moment when Brossoit got injured against us? He looked terrible and we were lighting him up. He goes down and their fourth string goalie comes out, middle of the playoffs, and plays out his mind and wins them a Cup.

This Skinner injury gives Rodrigue and Pickard real chances to show what they're made of the rest of the way. Never like to see someone injured but not a single person on this board could have been looking forward to Skinner being in net again this year.

This story has repeated itself so many times this year (including earlier against the exact same team) that I'm not buying it anymore. Put the puck in the net. You did 5 times against the same goalie not that long ago. I recognize that losing McDavid and Draisatl is tough to overcome but this "we got goalie'd" excuse is becoming old. Connor Brown, Mattias Janmark, Derek Ryan, just one of those depth forwards scoring early might have changed the game. But they never do. This team is too reliant on their top forwards to be a big threat in the playoffs.
This is kind of like ragging on Jeff Skinner after the game he scores 2 goals. The Oiler's depth guys scored 8 goals in the last two games and 3 last night against one of the better teams in the league. The loss last night had nothing to do with Janmark not scoring early in the game. Would it have made a difference, yes! But guess what you would win virtually every game if you score on all your chances.

How do people defend this clown in net at this point
I agree. The sad part is that he's still the best option we have, so we're stuck with him for this year. I don't think we have another deep run with him in the pipes - hopefully Bowman goes after another goalie this summer.

I also wonder if Walman's play isn't going to make Bouchard into trade bait this summer. I know Walman only has a year left on his deal, but he's playing very well, so if we could elevate him into a top role and sign him to an extension at 7 - 8M per year, and dangle Bouchard to help improve the goaltending and bring in another defenseman, I think it could make us a better team. I say this without being one of the Bouchard haters too, for the record.

There are other issues beyond fire the goalie coach and dump Skinner.
What other issues? The team played f***ing fine last night without their two best players and lost because of Skinner being the typical sieve he’s been this season. The team has upped their game ever since McDrai’s been out except Skinner is still being a sieve in net. What does that say? Skinner has been relatively shit the whole season and shit for brains Dustin Schwartz has only made him worse. His weaknesses aren’t even getting improved. Wtf does Schwartz do? Tell me since you’re the wisest poster here.

But that's just the thing. The actual depth guys like Janmark, Brown, etc never score. Part of the reason we got so far in the playoffs last year was because those guys (especially towards the end) were actually contributing on the scoresheet. Great they got within 1 but Dallas was coasting at that point. We had a couple of power plays early and failed to capitalize on them. It's not enough to just get scoring chances, they need to make them count. We're at game 71 and this team still struggles to finish scoring chances. At that point of the season it's not bad luck, it's just the way the team is.

How dare fans blame Skinner for the loss! It’s the players fault!

Well I don't think Skinner should be hated. He's performing to the level he's capable of. Not everyone can be one of the very best goalies in the NHL. It's hard to be one of the best at anything. It's management who is at fault.
Hate is a strong word. If we are looking back in a few years and we don't have the hardware you will know why. I think we need a poll for this. Its coaching before management and Skinner should be al least in the top 30 in the league stats wise. Coach has options and doesn't explore them.

The scoring from those types of players actually isn't that different from last year. This team blows a fair bit of chances, that's almost always been the case.

That’s been the song and dance the whole McDavid era..my job is too hard….offseason….patience
