Time to abandon the President's Trophy?

It is still the standing position with the most cups win I think:

Which make talk about curse always a bit strange and because of the low value on home ice in the nhl and very low prestige into winning the regular season now (unlike say the 06) I doubt serious contender empty the tank trying to win it.

First place in their own conference maybe, but dressing injured player for game 82 to win the president trophy over the other conference team, really doubt it.

All that to say, I doubt many would care either way.

In the last 10 playoffs 2016 to now, home teams have a 465W-431L lost record, better standing does not mean that much in hockey, home ice does not mean that much, little enough that combined we end up with a very modest 51.9% WinFor

How about abandoning the utterly meaningless Prince of Wales Trophy and the Clarence Campbell Bowl instead?

Will they touch it or not? Feel the drama!

Most of the time President's trophy winners are not winning by some massive margin, it can often be even a few percentages better than other teams which can be explained by puck luck or variance:

1.Pres trophy are healthy
2.Pres trophy run into teams that are injured
3.Pres trophy have a slightly easier schedule
4.Other contenders are banged up
5.Pres trophy play a style that allows them to smash the lower teams but doesn't work vs the best

So it shouldn't be expect that it is some massive advantage, however clearly it is 8/30 is obviously a better predictor than randomly selecting a playoff team, but obviously it's imperfect. But again, the margin they're winning by is often not as massive as it may seem.

When you say somebody is first, they can be clearly first or they could be first by 4-6-8 points which could easily be explained by variance. So again, there's no curse, but teams around them are just much closer than it would appear.

I'm sure if you looked at top 2 teams and top 4 teams it becomes an even better predictor and realistically any top 4 team could easily win the President's trophy.

#5 is not a thing. If you have 113+ points you beat your share of good teams.
