Somebody posted the idea in a thread. In 1972 the Russians and Canadians faced off against each other in an 8 game series in September, best on best. At the time almost nobody in Canada thought Russia would win a game. The series changed the hockey world forever and for the better.

It's time the US and Canada to meet best on best. It would be as historic as '72 and the best marketing opp the NHL could hope for - better than the Olympics. Americans and Canadians 8 straight games would be viciously competed.

At the same time Sweden and Finland could hold their own series. I bet it would be huge in those countries.

Let's see the rosters both countries could ice.

I'd rather just have an actual best on best tournament than a series between any two teams. It would probably be pretty good hockey though.

In no way would it be as "historic" as the 1972 Summit Series. There would be no element or mystery or perceived clash of political systems or even different styles.

you might be right, it could be bigger.
The Soviet Union was an unknown, mysterious opponent. There is none here.

There is no political-ideological contrast linked to a sporting even as there was then.

There can be no element of shock in result here to the degree there was then in relation to perceived hierarchy in hockey dominance.

Winning in ‘72 was about far, far more than just winning a hockey series for both sides whereas winning this proposed USA-CAN summit series would be nothing more than winning a hockey series

You can't recreate '72 (for obvious reasons) but in honor of the 50 year anniversary of the historic event there may as well be another one in 2022 against the next up and coming challenger with legit aspirations of being Top Dog. Quite frankly, there is no other international hockey that interests me as much as this 8 game event. Doesn't look like we are going to get an actual best on best tournament anytime soon, so we may as well do our own thing.

I've been pushing this idea for years. It won't be historic as the original, but the hockey would be epic. and that's all we should be after.

In 1972, Canada thought they were the best because they owned the top league in the world. The Soviet Union thought they were the best because they owned international hockey.

In 2019, Canada thinks they are the best because they have the vast majority of the players in the top league in the world and won a bunch of Olympic and IIHF medals. USA thinks they are the best because of something that happened 38 (and to a lesser extent, 23) years ago, and people are delusional.

No point to this proposed series.

A seven game series removes some of the chance that single elimination WC or Olympics has regarding best team not winning.

In Europe we would be in angry mode: "What? They want to ignore all the elite players from Europe? Go to hell NHL..." Or something like that. World hockey isnt now only Canada and USA.

I think it is an excellent idea. Those would be some awesome games. It's very close with Sweden, Finland and Russia as well, but Canada and USA are definitely stronger overall and might ignite something special.

Great idea. Wouldn't be as historic as '72, but still could create its own history. Maybe have the women's teams compete concurrently.

Better yet, they should have a tournament where ALL countries play each other in a tournament style.

Kind of like the Olympics.

Since the NHL has abandoned the Olympics this would be the next best thing.

Problem is that Hockey Canada probably won’t take the initiative to start something like this. They try not to go against the NHL.

It would be a NHL/NHLPA/Hockey Canada and USAH initiative. If the revenues are there, they would all go for it. The only question is, are the revenues there? How much would Canadian/American broadcasters pay? rights fees would have to be significant.
