Ticket/Attendance Discussion: The Sequel

You don't have to agree that everything is fine, but the situation the Jets were in before they left in '96 and the situation the Jets are in today are not comparable.

All the whinging about not selling out every game is exhausting, and frankly unrealistic.
Whining and Exhausting? Why have a ticket/attendance topic then? I am concerned about the low #s here in WinnipegI don't give a rats azz about Calgary or Buffalo or any other city that has empty seats. Maybe this topic should be closed then if we can't give our opinions.

They own a modern, paid-off arena (and all attendant revenue streams) that was financed when interest rates were around 0.5% - and if that weren't enough, the mortgage was paid by government tax breaks and refunds (to the tune of about $12M/year). They also operate a franchise in a hard-cap pro sports league with a guaranteed 50-50 player/owner revenue split and significant leaguewide revenue sharing (playoffs, merch, national TV deals, etc.). On top of all that, the co-owner of TNSE is worth billions and seems quite invested in the idea of NHL hockey in Winnipeg. To top it all off, the team is worth 10 times what they paid for it in 2011 (Sens just sold for $950M USD = $1.25B CAD).

They made a lot of hay while the sun was shining, and with their current ownership structure and facilities and conditions, they can certainly weather some empty seats.

Things are completely different - in many ways, totally opposite - to the conditions in the early/mid 90s that led to the original Jets franchise relocation.
You guys making me tap the sign again...

The Flames had a ton of empty seats yesterday and it was the night they were honouring Johnny Gaudreau, a much loved local icon. Nobody here is going to start harping on how they're going to MoVe ThE tEaM. I don't get this whole need to dramatize these things as being so much more serious than they are.

The team is doing fine.

They need to do a better job engaging the business community and maybe win back a few fans they alienated. It doesn't happen instantly though.
The Flames still sold 17,386 tickets last night.

Oh yeah, definitely. Every week we get people worried that the sky is falling because the arena didn't sell out every game.

Other team's attendance numbers are relevant when looking at comparable data, the Jets don't exist in a vacuum. You can bury your head in the sand all you like, but comparable data is important if you don't want to remain ignorant.

You can give your opinions all you like, but hearing the same tired fearmongering week after week is definitely exhausting. Didn't sell out? The Jets must be leaving lol

Nobody said that you can't give your opinions but that doesn't change the fact that people will find those opinions exhausting, LOL.

Fact of life

Having concerns is fine, people having opinions about your concerns is also fine.

I think the attendance is on the upswing this season compared to last, which is good. Those special deals they offer are good ways to get people into seats. That said, losing is the fastest way to an empty building so the team needs to turn it around here

Agreed. I try not to get to much into the attendance talk, but comparing 90% capacity of a 19k arena vs 15k is huge. And Buffalo? Is Buffalo seriously the quality of team that's on the barometer here?

IMO the Jets ain't moving. But for sure ticket sales, and revenue is a relevant topic to the team. Especially considering they may end up paying like 130+ million in salaries for the Jets and Moose.

Team Value
$780M Calculated December 2023

Year Purchased 2011
Price Paid $170M
Revenue $162M
Operating Income $21M
Debt/Value 17%
Player Expenses $84M
Gate Receipts $51M

Metro Area Population
0.9M

I want to throw my two cents in- I am tired of hearing this diatribe about how the empty seats are spelling doom for the Jets. The Jets are still making money. The valuation of the franchise has risen significantly since purchase in 2011. The owner is the richest man in Canada. In 2022-2023, the franchise had a revenue of $162 M according to Forbes. Gate receipts for the Jets have always been consistent- they make up about 1/3 of the revenue of the organization. All of this to say, that as long as this team is turning a profit, they are not going anywhere.

Is this a recent valuations article? If so, do you have a link?

Do I think the team is moving anytime soon. No

Do I think TNSE want, and expect the building to be fuller. YES

Do I think they plan on building a new arena in Winnipeg. Not for at least 20 years.

Does it matter that 50% owner Thomson family are really rich. Not necessarily

Franchise valuation (I assume it is at $1 billion by now) does not equal cash flow. That being said its nice to have.

Is it the customers fault that the building is at approximately 90% capacity. Its NEVER the customers fault.

Summary: The Jets are here to stay (IMO) although I wouldn't be surprised to see some ownership reconfiguration. Some (fans, haters, other) will always be sounding the alarm about the team is leaving but that's just white noise, you can choose to listen to it or tune it out.

I think it's more that the point is kind of irrelevant on a game-to-game basis. Until the season ticket base is restored, there will be games that are short of a sellout. It's just silly to be like "Oh no 13000 again!" when we KNOW that it's going to be that way all season. True North needs to sell more season tickets. Everyone knows it. But that will happen in the offseason. Until then, it makes no sense to act surprised when games aren't selling out. The season ticket base is by far the biggest determining factor in how many tickets are sold to each game, and it doesn't change mid-season. If the season ticket base goes down or stays stagnant by next season, then it's worthy of remarking on. Until then, it's just beating a dead horse. We aren't getting 4000 walkups on Tuesday night against St Louis in December.

Thank you for a good response. I am an anxious person by nature and will try to just enjoy the games. It's out of my control anyway and is kind of ruining my love for the team. From now on I'm not going to let attendance bother me.

Yeah, I get it. Last year was concerning for sure. But the attendance numbers this season have been much better. Average attendance is up, there's been more sellouts, and the lowest-attended games have about 1500 more fans than the lowest-attended games last season. They still have lots of work to do but it's trending the right way.

In Winnipeg next week. 2 home games.
Guess the question is best way to purchase tickets? Would like to see both Boston n Vegas.
Can u get tickets day of?
Better to use ticketmaster or stubhub resales?
Or sites like Gametime?
Pregame pubs nearby? ( althou the game the 12th might not be able to as I have to go to Brandon n back that day so schedule would be tight.)

There's also FansFirst: FansFirst - By Fans. For Fans. No Fees.

Drinking venues to the south-west side of the arena at Tavern United and the Hargrave Street Market (includes LotW Brewing Co.). Boston Pizza at the back of City Place. Rudy's is a block west on Graham in the Hydro building. Browns to the north on the other side of Portage.
