Thread About Nothing (part # who cares)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Yeah I just hope things can get fixed after how much damage has already been done in just a couple months. I won't go any further than that lest I get a warning for bordering on too political. Anyway...

I had something mailed to me from Texas to PA a month ago and it still hasn't made it. The travel history is as follows:

El Paso TX
Albuquerque NM
Portland OR
Jersey City NJ
Dallas TX
Philadelphia PA
Dallas TX

Right now it seems they don't even know where it is. The scary thing is I have two more things in the mail. One was at the post office a couple miles from my house last night and is now a couple hours away at a post office toward central PA.
damn dude i'm in PA too, same thing. i had something shipped from washington last month...it went to texas, florida, atlanta, i think? it finally arrived, but last i checked the tracking number still shows it's at the philadelphia distribution center or whatever. it was never marked as a complete delivery.

things aren't going to get 'fixed' for a long, long time.

so is the IRS. i still haven't gotten my refund check from colorado. my gf is a paralegal for a firm specializing in tax law, and the IRS is a ghost town right now. i'm just glad i cashed out my 401k.
Why in the world did you cash your 401K out? I'm assuming you're young? Young meaning at least a decade plus from retirement...so I'm assuming you were hit with penalties? Or are you just in the middle of a rollover to your new companies plan?

Nothing was more bleak than 2008 and the 3 after for investments and it came back. It always does. The US economy is bigger than politics...it finds a way past all the terrible decisions like a mouse in a maze, it always gets the cheese.

In retrospect the only thing I am happy about from my 30+ year IT career was that I maxed out my 401K and Roth most years.... it's about the only positive takeaway I have

well, i was starting a new job anyway and chose not to roll it over. i'll get on my company's 401k soon enough, but i'd honestly rather just invest it in gold, or something that isn't really susceptible to the whims of an idiot.

i'm probably another 25-30 years away from retirement (if i even live that long lol). i honestly couldn't care less about what will happen in 2050, i'll cross that bridge when i get to it. 2008 was bad, but even then there were guardrails in place. this feels very different, and i'm genuinely not sure what the future holds for us this time around. that's about all i can say on that.

Nobody knows what the future holds.

That's why we just keep plugging along, plan and do the best we can. :)

In 1994 the year graduated from college and really started working, 2032 the first year I am eligible for social security, sounded like an eternity away. It wasn't, it is not.

Funny cause back then most of my friends and coworkers didn't even believe there would be a "social security" left when we got to this age.

Perspectives can change pretty quickly. It's best to be prepared for all scenarios.

I want to respond but it ventures into dangerous territory. Let's just say people are right to be far more nervous than they were in 2008.

So if I buy something from an independent seller, they ship, and the package gets lost in the mail, who is responsible for following up with the shipper? To me, the seller should reimburse the buyer then take up the claim with the shipper. Not sure what standard practice is here though.

was there insurance on the package? from usps (i'm sure you've already seen this):

Either the sender or the recipient may file a claim for insured mail that is lost, arrived damaged, or was missing contents. The person filing must have the original mailing receipt. Each claim must be filed within a certain time period and include proof of insurance, value, and damage.

so it sounds like either one of you could start the process. now, if you don't have insurance and let's pretend the package was stolen from your porch, it sounds like you'd be f***ed. however, since the tracking shows that usps is still in possession of the package as it tours around the country- and it was never marked as delivered- you should still be able to file a claim.

I have two more things that appear to be lost as well and now one from UPS lol. No scan updates for days. What a mess.

I wonder what travel restrictions other countries might start putting on us. Better make sure you have all your docs in line.
Documents? I don't deal with that stuff, my wife does...there'll never be travel restrictions anywhere in the Caribbean. Tourism is more than 50% of their total economy.

Just noticed I got a award for Surviving the Great Crash of 2025?

okay?
I got mine a bit ago during the game tonight.

I’m guessing everyone got it except for those who signed up after March of 2024 and had to make a new account.

Those posters definitely did not survive the great crash of 2025.

I’d argue the reaction to 2008 is why we’re in this mess to begin with. Putting the interest rates to zero was a massive mistake, because it gave companies a free pass. Plus, it gave rise to the tech industry, which runs on free money because their ideas, at their core, are awful business ideas that don’t make profit. Meanwhile the average person’s life hasn’t improved and has gotten worse in many ways.

All that said, I’m still contributing to my accounts, and whatever happens, happens. I’m taking things a day at a time and enjoying the moment. I have three foster kids so it’s about all I can do.

What mess? Did I miss something?

Everyone, every generation and person with any stake no matter the age always thinks the world is going to hell... it's not. Things have always been chaotic with "big issues" facing us... It's a constant state of affairs.

I personally think it's more of a side effect of self importance... thinking my issues or these issues right now are the biggest issues ever... they're not.

It goes on...always will.

This is not the place for me to elaborate on what I mean. You may be right about things going on as usual. I'm in the boat of "things will still chug along while slowly getting worse." I sympathize with the online meme of "nothing ever happens."

Best thing I can do is keep on doing what I'm doing. In spite of everything going on, my life is really good.
