Thoughts on Chatfield's Takedown Yesterday?

Zero reason for Aho to fight, especially a guy like Wilson.

Wilson was on the bench. After getting his knee slashed by Aho. Looked like McMichael was the one challenging for the fight.

6’ 180 lb Connor McMichael.

Here’s the position they were in when Chatfield pulled on McMichael’s arm to try and get him off balance.

View attachment 1005858

Two important things here:

1) Chatfield, as he initiates the pull, is in no position to put his leg across McMichael’s. In fact their skates are perfectly positioned for that not to be possible, both in a hockey-stop position and parallel to each other.

2) McMichael is pivoting clockwise with his back foot. This becomes very important in the next split-second.

This is where the leverage took hold.

Note that Chatfield’s skate position has not changed.

In this instant, McMichael’s entire body weight has suddenly shifted from his back foot to his front foot, causing his back foot to lift completely off the ice and his front foot to slide forward as it takes his weight. This is not “leverage move”, it’s a grown man’s entire body weight being physically lifted forward by his opponent.

At this point, McMichael’s entire body goes ragdoll. You can watch a lot of hockey fights and never see someone end up in this position.

Note that Chatfield’s foot still has not moved — McMichael’s is sliding forward because he is being physically lifted for a split-second.

And, crucially, McMichael’s original clockwise inertia is now causing him to lean into the pull on his left arm, while his front foot continues to slide forward.

This is where we run into a problem. Chatfield’s still pulling on that left arm, but once McMichael’s arm is fully extended his torso naturally needs to follow. You can see Chatfield fall back on his heels as the counterweight to his pull disappears. The inertia pivots both men on the only point which is still holding their body weights — their forward legs, which lock at the calf as they go into a flywheel motion.

Bearing in mind that this took place in a fraction of a second, I really really doubt that Chatfield had a controlled plan for how it would play out. What started as a simple jersey tug to throw his opponent off-balance turned into his opponent lifting off into a pirouette, which kind of had to be an unexpected twist.
It’s actually hilarious how much you’re defending this play he literally 10000% went for a “throw” and mind you I’ve already defended Chatfield because I know it was a highly emotionally game and things happen very fast

I mean there’s a slow mo like 2 pages back. You can see where he finishes spinning and decides to whip his stick towards Wilson. I doubt he was trying to catch him in the knee. But he did.
Regardless of what you think of Ahos stick swing that was about 40 minutes after the start of Wilson's bullshit. As many many people have mentioned on here as soon as the Canes scored their 3rd goal the national broadcast quited Wilson telling the Canes bench that someone was going to get hurt tonight. He then proceeded to take runs at every small guy on the Canes. Deliberately cross check anybody in red. And be his normal goon self instead of playing hockey.

Chats play was bad, Ahos stick was unnecessary (but retalitory) regardless of any of that Wilson escalated the entire thing from the start of the tempers until he got dropped by 5'8" Logan Stankoven.

A body slam onto the ice could have resulted in a life altering or ending type scenario if McMichael’s head had snapped back the wrong way or hit the ice directly. That’s incredibly unhinged decision by Chatfield.

Uhhh ya let’s just agree to disagree on this one.

‘This is a play that happens a million times per game. Nothing to get up in arms about’

So does the Wilson crosscheck on Walker that you've been crying about for 2 days now.

Fun fact, Tom Wilson has more goals than anyone on your team and would be second in points. Not bad for a "goon".

I know things are heated here but can I despise Tom Wilson as a Canes fan and also want him on the Canes at the same time without getting bullied by internet people?

I did not realize he had that many goals this year. Potting that many playing his style is really impressive in today’s game.

Well that was my point which completely went over you're head.... but it's especially insane to think that Aho hitting Wilson with his stick while being spun around avoiding an open ice hit is in the same league as a cross check to the numbers when the player isn't in the crease and being engaged by another guy.

And I never called him a goon. I called him a f***ing idiot.

19 pages of crying victim after slashing a knee and trying to crack a skull open.

“Took a run”
“Star with his head down”

My guy the videos are on the internet. In this thread even lol.

I mean, anyone can watch the video and see that there wasn’t even a “slash”, Wilson just got clipped by a swinging stick after he missed an attempt at taking out a top player. Doubtful that it even left a bruise, unless he has sensitive skin.

As you say, the videos are here and I’m not the only one telling you you’ve got some sort of goggles on to see it as dangerous or even deliberate.

Again, these angles conveniently hide that when Chatfield begins that pull their legs are in no position to collide. The reason McMichael gets tripped up is because of the way he (somewhat inexplicably) lifts completely off the ice and slides forward so that their legs cross and both tumble to the side.

You can say Chatfield was going for the “throw” in the sense that he was trying to pull McMichael off balance for a takedown, but there’s no way in hell that Chatfield actually thought he would ragdoll McMichael to the point of being able to do some Jackie Chan move on him. There’s a reason we never see something like this, and it’s not about respect. Players are not typically able to just toss each other around like a sack of potatoes.

I have a general belief that if Eklund says something, the exact opposite take is the appropriate one

I'm not sure if there's a rule they can suspend him for that, but that's 100% dangerous and dirty. It should be a lenghty suspension for that. He never tried to fight/punch. What's next, smashing a guys head into the boards!?

So Chatfield did the right thing and taught McMichael a lesson: don’t mess with Aho or get wrecked. Then Wilson ran around and did what he’s supposed to do. The league allows bare knuckle fighting.

Yeah, it was dirty but when the gloves are dropped, there's a chance someone may hit the ice hard or break a hand or a bone in their face.

I don't remember a player being suspended for something like this. He wouldn't get suspended if he almost killed his opponent like Ovechkin vs Svechnikov. This isn't like UFC where there's clear rules about kicking someone who is down or hitting in the back of the head. I wouldn't like it either if I were Washington, but that doesn't warrant a suspension.

Your favourite analyst is probably Jenn Botterill.

I don't know how people are so worried about this happening in a fight, it is a fight.

A lot of people need to change the channel or close their eyes when a fight comes on it seems.

^ This guy actually thinks that the point of fights are to hurt/get hurt

Holy naive

Ovechkin didn't almost kill him, it was a great knockout that was in the spirit of fighting.

What Chetfield did was a judo throw that has nothing to do with fighting or even taking someone down during a fight.

The outcome from any fight worst case scenario is a concussion for the knocked out player, the outcome for a judo throw on a helmetless player no less is possibly death/being paralyzed for life.

Maybe if he spent more time trying to score and less time telling Carolina "someone is getting hurt tonight" you guys might have made it a closer game.

Wonder if the Caps keep Wilson on the bench while Stankoven is on the ice next game as to not get embarrassed physically again.
Imagine getting humbled by the smallest guy on the ice after you've already flown off the handle declaring your intent to injure to the opposing bench earlier in the game.

That must suck. No wonder they are trying to deflect

Wilson is having a really good year and if he played hockey more often he might even be a top player.

With all that being said since this is a thread between the Canes and the Caps. Wilson has zero points in the three games so far this year.

I mean you could KO someone and they fall to the ice without a helmet, hit their head and get to that same result you're talking about. It's almost like there is risk of serious injury involved in many of these situations that players willingly participate in.

Anything can happen in theory.

What are the odds higher though; fighting someone, koing them and having their head hit the ice or judo throwing a helmetless player towards the ice?

Do you want to bring back hits to the head because players get injured off of regular hits, so it's all the same anyways.
