Thoughts on Chatfield's Takedown Yesterday?

Caps are basically locked in the #1 spot in the East, so they may not dress all their guys by then, guys that are a bit banged up usually get a game or two off near the end to get ready for the playoffs.
If you think the Caps need to protect Wilson and not dress him then I guess that's a possibility as well. Still think it's more likely he does something stupid and gets suspended though.

If Ovi hasn’t set the record yet by Thursday I imagine Bettman will tell the refs to keep the lease tight so a potential record breaking goal doesn’t get overshadowed by a sideshow.

Chatty and McMichael can square up at the first face off (both non-fighters) and then on with the game.

Nah, Aho swung his stick at the back of Wilson’s knee, then wouldn’t answer for it. Things got crazy after that. Your premise of him only running smaller players is also incredibly biased and wrong, it’s a new thing that Wilson haters have come up with I guess.
For me the thing about Wilson that irks me isn't so much about his actual fisticuffs/thuggery - it's the charade he does after every altercation.

Or possibly cheap-shotted...One of these days an opponent will take a run at Wilson with the intent to injure.

It would not be wise for the Canes to play that game with the Caps. Next Thursday will be fun, hope your boys keep their heads up.

So again we come back to, why bother having respect for the opponent if this is the attitude they’re giving?

Carolina’s big crime in this game was kicking Washington’s ass at hockey. Everything we’re talking about right now stems from the Caps failing to show up, getting embarrassed, and melting down emotionally.

One thing that could be interesting is if Ovie picks up a couple of goals against the Hawks and Islanders, which is highly likely. Caps are really going to make the next game all about Wilson’s revenge, with Ovie at 894?

I disagree completely. The refs let this game get out of hand and it almost resulted in a serious injury. Canes fans think this is fine because Tom Wilson plays for the Caps, thus anything goes "f*ck around and find out". You guys are making things up to try and justify your response, like "McMichael delivering a heavy hit to Chatfield" or "Wilson going for a headshot on Aho". Honestly just a really bad look for you guys. Notice how the vast majority of responses to the fight have been something along the lines of "this doesn't belong in hockey"? You guys are objectively wrong and are acting like clowns.

Caps aren't the type of team to just start gooning it up for no reason. Obviously they took offense to some of the Canes players actions. Refs weren't handling it, so they felt the need to.

Chatfield will be expected to answer the bell, and it's not going to be with McMichael this time. If he doesn't, yeah things are going to get ugly. If Wilson slew foot judo tossed one of your teams players head first onto the ice, would you not want the same?

Then it’s weird how they keep getting involved in situations like this. I wonder what the common element is?

If Wilson slew foot judo tossed one of your teams players head first onto the ice, would you not want the same?

And again, we come back to using your own logic — if Wilson’s going to be out there doing the things he does, why should anyone else give a **** about safety during the next encounter? May as well just take guys out of the game, if that’s how it’s going to be.

I don't a have a dog in the fight, but I don't think Wilson is an overrated fighter. and I've seen lots of his fights. In fact, I think he's a really good fighter. Maybe you meant by the quality of the fighting opponent.
Some here act as though he is Lucic. Capable but not the fearsome fighter Carolina is quivering in fear over.

The audacity of the canes for playing good hockey and not letting Washington cheap shot them all game

Very much this.

Bottom line for me is it was a bad play by Chatfield. I lean towards more punishment than the DOPS usually doles out, so I'd vote for Chat sitting for a game or two.

But at the same time, McMichael provoked Chatfield 2-3 times before forcing his hand on the fight. And that was after 2 or 3 shifts in a row of Caps players taking runs and crosschecking during and after whistles.

You are responsible for your actions and emotions.

Oh horseshit

Washington gooned it up all game and because someone finally returned the favor it's a horrific event that he needs to answer the bell for? f*** that.

He answered the bell when McMichael chased him all over the ice goading him into a fight and answered it so well that Caps fans have their panties in a bunch whining about this "career threatening dirty play". You wanted the bull, for the horns, and can't handle someone finally stood up to it.

This specific poster and a few other bruins fans drool over any chance to talk shit about Tom Wilson. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s because they can’t admit that Tom Wilson is a more complete player than their beloved Milan Lucic ever was. Edit* he literally brought up Lucic LOL

McMichael didnt goad a bull. Chatfield is a human adult who can make decisions, so he needs to be held accountable for his actions. There is no place in hockey for a judo move. Im sure lots of players had both the opportunity and anger/motivation/want to do that move. But they don't, because it is WRONG.

There you go, making things up again. McMichael and Chatfield were both going at each other up the ice. If anything, you could say that Chatfield instigated it because McMichael barely hit him.

I see you in your Carolina forum.

"We should call up someone for the sole purpose of taking runs at Wilson and Ovi all game with elbows up when we play them next. No reason not to, not much else to play for and you know they are going to try it, so why not fight fire with fire."

Sad dude.

It's a takedown, nothing more. In the days of actual fighting this was not a shocking occurence. I think Chatty was just getting leverage any way he could and it came out the way it did. I get Caps fans being upset by it, but in that game there were no angels in general. Caps fans cant claim innocence. I actually generally defend Wilson more than the average person does, but when hes grabbing Stankoven because hes so desperate to pound someone then this is the game youre gonna get. Chatty didnt get involved in that scrap because he had intention of tossing the guy the way he did.

Is it though? I dont recall seeing a lot of this.

The takedown is a standard part of almost every fight, and they threw themselves around any way they could. I agree this one ended up more emphatic than most because the player wasn't at all prepared for it for some reason. I think thats a generational thing as most guys dont have any experience with fighting, so they're not ready for the takedown.

I've seen some other examples around the net today of guys being thrown down much like this that didn't have any disciplne attached either. I do think there is some sense in "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" here. If you don't want to get thrown around dont get in a fight. While there's always been some level of "code", a fight is a fight. You're taking chances with your health every single time you get involved.
