Thoughts on Chatfield's Takedown Yesterday?

Wilson is a POS, yes. But that's not the point of this discussion.
I'm just saying his actions ramped things up to where it got to a point where things got out of hand and he has a history of doing this. Not justifying Chatfield's Judo move. It's not part of the game but Wilson running around like an idiot escalated things so it's not like the whole situation just came out of nowhere.

Agreed. They aren't equal but they are both dirty and sometimes the smaller actions (especially by a psycho on a rampage) can lead to bigger actions. Not saying that's right but it's also not proper to only look at the play out of context and not talk about what led to it. Punish Chatfield for being dangerous but you also can't let guys like Wilson run around being idiots and not expects teams to do anything about it.
I agree to a point. Wilson should be punished with a 2 minute penalty, and chatfield should be punished with a suspension. Wilson’s act isn’t suspension worthy, it needs to be punished in game with the penalty it deserves.

For those who didn’t see the game last night, this was the tone immediately leading up to this incident:

Immediately after that, McMichael chased Chatfield down behind the play to instigate another fight. Note that this happened around 5:30, which is right at the borderline where he doesn’t risk a suspension for doing it.

This is the fight in real-time. Remember, neither of these guys is an experienced fighter.

Sorry if I don’t have any pearls handy to clutch over this. The Caps wanted the smoke and they got it. Unsurprisingly, something dangerous happened as a result. It’s not so fun when it’s your guy getting the sharp end of the stick.

Do you have the video of the Burns skate on OV? That was so cool men. Sent a direct message to those Caps that we won’t be pushed around in Raleigh!

It's a gutless play, you don't do that and it deserves punishment. Could see a fine here since there isn't much of a precedent for suspending takedowns. I like Chatfield and he seems like a pretty honest player, so I don't think he realized the danger in what he was doing during the moment. Still, you just can't.

Unless McMichael is in possession of the world's straightest neck or had gone unconscious on his way down to the ice, I don't see how he would've hit his head.

yeah in the context of the entire game I have ZERO issue with what Chatty did. Caps were getting their asses kicked and resorted to dirty cheap play and trying to fight everyone on a Canes team that has fought the least of any team in the league in recent years. The refs not only let them get away with it but there were sequences where every Cap on the ice started shit with the Canes and they came out of it on the powerplay.

McMichael had a clean hit on Chatty who just got up and was skating away and for some reason McMichael decided to chase him down the ice while slashing and hacking him and then jumping on him from behind and basically forcing him to fight. He made his bed and f***ed around and found out. Glad he didn't hit his head hard on the ice but Chatty is not a fighter and didn't want to fight so his lack of experience resulted in a dangerous takedown. It was all preventable if the Caps weren't a bunch of sore loser clowns and/or if the refs did their job.

Look at the replay, 35 seconds in. McMichael hardly hits Chatfield and he tries skating away and Chatfield grabs him, not the other way around. McMichael slashes and cross checks him after that, before Chatfield cross checks him and they drop the gloves. McMichael was fine with going once they tangled up, but he was the one who was skating away (after an extremely light hit) and Chatfield grabbed him. He initiated that whole engagement.

Would have won gold at the Olympics in Judo with that toss.

Dangerous AF. Should be suspended and he’s lucky that McMichael didn’t get seriously injured.
Is there are rule that governs this action when engaged in a fight? I know there’s a rule against wearing tape on hands. But are there other rules governing the actions during a fight? If not, then even though this is an extremely dangerous action, it’s not a suspension. The league would need to set rules for how players must engage in bare knuckle fist fights. Which, of course, sounds insane in a modern sport.

You saying Wilson ramped things up is trying to justify what Chatfield did.

Anyway, I'm done with this thread. Canes fans are not worth my time.

That was dangerous takedown, thankfully kept his head from slamming on the ice.

“McMichael chased Chatfield down behind the play”

McMichael barely hit Chatfield and Chatfield grabbed him while he was trying to skate away, which is clear in the replay. McMichael in no way chased him down. Not defending anything Wilson did or the tone of the game.

Chatfield has 3 career fights, not 7, and this is the first one since his rookie year in 2022.
Yeah didn’t realize some of the ones on hockey fights were from juniors/the AHL.

It's unfortunate that we couldn't keep our cool, even when provoked and game getting out of hand.

I don't think Chatfield meant to martial arts someone, but I don't like the takedown when the other guy is helmetless, so he will probably be disciplined and that's fine.

And at the end of the day, Wilson is a professional goon who won because everyone is talking about this play instead of Wilson going after all the smaller guys.

The Hurricanes have always struggled with the physicality line in the playoffs which costs us...if we meet Washington we will have to be more composed and handle Wilson better.

Why is Wilson becoming the topic here?

Him running around made Chatfield stick his leg behind and Judo toss a helmetless player to the ice?

He set the tone for the incident, and also conveniently provided the precedent for why nothing will come of it.

A team can’t have a guy Matt Cooke’ing it up on national TV and then moan about the league needing to protect their players.

Admittedly I didn't watch the game. Did Wilson have suspension worthy hits/actions last?

Is there a height/weight requirement to be eligible for contact?

despite the whataboutism's and both-sides-isms it comes down to simply this:

with a helmet on it's a pretty dangerous looking judo-slewfoot, without a helmet it becomes something much more serious
