Thoughts on Chatfield's Takedown Yesterday?

So it's ok for Chatfield to do what he did to McMichael because of what Wilson did?

I’m not even saying it’s ok. I’m saying it’s a predictable consequence and I’m finding it awfully difficult to dredge up concern for a Caps player almost getting hurt when they’ve got a guy running around deliberately looking to injure people for the entire game, and everyone’s openly talking about it on national TV.

The one thing I will acknowledge here is that it wasn’t a Caps fan who started this thread. They knew what was up last night which was why there wasn’t a thread until the next day.

Yeah you mean the type of cross checking that can happen on any given night in the NHL? Crazy
Maybe don't cross check an unsuspecting player in the back with enough force to send them flying? Like just because that shit happens doesn't mean it's not going to get the opposing team pissed off and start shit.

The yes or no question here is what Wilson did in that moment a POS dirty move? The answer is yes. Was it egregious? I guess it depends on your definition of egregious... but also yes? Like what would be the defence of that action at all?

Two wrongs doesn't make a right. Take off your homer colored glasses.
It's not 2 wrongs my man, NHL has already declared neither is a wrong with precedent. If people don't like it, petition the NHL to address it in the offseason. As others have posted, takedowns like this happen all the time in fights. Not always a guy with his helmet off or that clean but they happen all the time and nobody gives them a second thought.

Because unbiased fans would understand it's dirty AF, no matter the context.

Like I previously said, two wrongs doesn't make a right.

It was a slew foot. It deserves a suspension - you do not want to condone this type of action due to the potential consequences. I understand people grapple, but this is not grappling in the engagement, it's a leg sweep to throw a player onto the ice at a dangerous angle.

I’m glad someone started a thread on this so I can point out that it was immediately preceded by 3 periods of Tom Wilson openly threatening to injure someone on national TV while taking repeated runs the smallest players on the ice, until he finally came across 5’8” Logan Stankoven… who dropped him to his knees with a right
He was literally shouting at the opposing bench, directly next to a reporter giving a live account on national television, that he was going to injure certain players before the game was over, and then taking runs at those same players. This was all caught in 4K.

The game got out of hand because the Caps stopped playing hockey and started taking runs. Next thing you know we have a thread about how one of them could have gotten hurt in the fight he provoked. Okay.
What?? You can’t be serious.. two wrongs don’t make a right. If Chatfield stood there and pummeled the dudes face in, there wouldn’t even be a thread about this and no one would give a damn. Chatfield decided to leg sweep the guy and you’re defending it because Washington’s actions? Let’s play hockey, don’t bring this kinda crap into the sport and for sure don’t support it. Let the fighting do the talking

What Chatfield did wasn't right. You shouldn't be throwing down people to the ice like that ever, but especially without a helmet. Just like how it wasn't right for Wilson to superman cross check Walker in the back to send him flying for no reason.

But yeah, the next guy who deliberately picked a fight with a non-fighter didn’t like being exposed to injury as a result. Concerning. Someone should be doing something about this dangerous behavior.
You’re saying McMichael deliberately picked a fight with a non fighter? McMichael had 2 career fights before last night to Chatfield’s 7. He lightly finished his hit on Chatfield and Chatfield got salty and grabbed McMichael who was skating away, initiating the whole thing. There is zero chance that he initiates that if Wilson is the one that finishes that check, so it’s pretty comical that you’re crying about Wilson going after Stankoven (which yeah, was also over the line).

One is a two minute penalty, the other is an almost unheard of action that will need to be looked at by the league.

Going 9 over the speed limit and calling it dangerous driving and running stop signs in a school zone are two different types of "dangerous driving"

Very much this.

Bottom line for me is it was a bad play by Chatfield. I lean towards more punishment than the DOPS usually doles out, so I'd vote for Chat sitting for a game or two.

But at the same time, McMichael provoked Chatfield 2-3 times before forcing his hand on the fight. And that was after 2 or 3 shifts in a row of Caps players taking runs and crosschecking during and after whistles.
McMichael lightly finished his check and tried skating away, before Chatfield grabbed him. After that it was pretty mutual, but look at the replay, he had zero interest in that initial hit leading to a fight. It was a bump.

Wilson is a POS, yes. But that's not the point of this discussion.

I remember Brad Marchand hip tossing Bratt a few years ago, didn't like that one bit nor do I like this one.
Keep the leg sweeps and hip tossing in Judo/MMA not the NHL.

Agreed. They aren't equal but they are both dirty and sometimes the smaller actions (especially by a psycho on a rampage) can lead to bigger actions. Not saying that's right but it's also not proper to only look at the play out of context and not talk about what led to it. Punish Chatfield for being dangerous but you also can't let guys like Wilson run around being idiots and not expects teams to do anything about it.

There's an unwritten rule about throws and takedowns, and if stuff like this keeps happening the NHL will be forced to micromanage fights, which will be the beginning of the end of fighting.

For fighting to stay in hockey the players need to have some class.
