Really liked what I saw from Perrault out there last night. He was certainly noticeable on the ice. Would have had a beautiful first NHL point if Laf didn't botch the shot. Made some solid passes all night. Can't blame him on the deflected goal, it happens.
Also, I can't believe so many people want Panarin gone, there's plenty of other players that need to go before he does. He's actually making plays out there!

Crazy how - I realize for sure last season that our PP was obviously overperforming and we relied on it WAY too much. I contemplated "what if we come down to earth and produce like normal?". I NEVER contemplated "what if theyre in the bottom 5 of the league next year" It makes no sense at all.

I don’t want Panarin gone because his lack of play. He’s the only one who tries and when he looks horrible it’s because he tries doing everything and he gets ZERO pick support. Everyone stays on the perimeter and stops in their tracks. No one goes to the net.
I want to trade Panarin because this team is unlikely for a deep run next season unless they hit on their coach and everyone magically goes back to playing to their potential. Panarin is the one who could net us a 1st and top prospect to help retool. Or an upcoming potential top line player.
But I’m also cool keeping him and resigning at the same/lower cap hit and going for it after we get rid of Kreider and potentially Zib.

Also, I'm convinced a lot of people want this team to be bad so long as the kids play. Kids Kids Kids! Play the kids!

Something is wrong with Kreider making him ineffective and Zibs is a negative threat this season. Makes everything one dimensional. I blame it more on Zibs. At least last year he was shooting and missing the net. This season he keeps making terrible passes and decisions with the puck. Then the defense clears.

Gabe kept it simple last night. Played less than Kreider, but took 5 more shifts. (The same amount of shifts as Panarin). He wasn't scared to receive the puck or get involved in the play. Made some quick passes and looked like he actually cared. They confirmed he's 175 (from Gabe's mouth, apparently).
There's obviously work for him to do this offseason.
At times he looked standstill in his own zone and I'm not sure if it's because he's not use to the pace, conserving energy, or hasn't a clue in the world what structure they're actually trying to use. So I can't really judge that on 1 game.
His agility was good. So was his top/near top speed. But his first few steps could be faster, especially on the stop and starts. The NHL pace is not easy, especially in a man-to-man coverage. Gabe has already improved in that area but I think he could benefit from continuing those first few steps being even faster.

Perreault's setup to Lafreniere early grazes the glove of a sprawling defender, otherwise Gustavsson needs to make an amazing save to prevent a goal.
In Perreault's brief PP2 time he sets up two quality scoring chances. In one of those plays, he has his back turned to Brodzinski but makes the play quickly and precisely anyway. That play and the Lafreniere chance shows Perreault's on-ice vision and that NHL pace seems like a non-issue for him.
He showed some flashes of speed also. He's going to make an impact down the stretch it seems, my concern for right now is he's too slight for physical battles.

How much will Panarin want on his next contract? How much are we comfortable giving him? If he's willing to take less than he's making now on a shorter-term deal, I'd be more inclined to re-sign him. If he's looking for a pay raise and/or longer term, trade him and get pieces that will help us long term.
This is something we have to address this offseason, though. We can't wait until 2026 to figure it out. Either extend him at a reasonable number or trade him this summer. I don't want him playing in his last year, not getting traded at the deadline because we are fighting for the playoffs, then walking in the summer. He has way too much value to risk that.
However it shakes out, I don't think we're going to win a cup with him. I just don't see us being able to fix this team over the next few years without trading him. Maybe we get super lucky and sign McDavid as a UFA in 2026, but much more likely, we're going to need to focus on the trade market to get this team back into cup contention in the near term. Panarin is our most valuable trade chip outside of Fox.

Whether you believe it's injury, age decline, him "dogging it" or whatever, the fact is he hasn't been a factor on the PP the way he historically has been. It's not just his goals, but his net front play that creates a ton of opportunity and open looks (often open nets) for the rest of the unit.
I'm kind of surprised it isn't being discussed more. If this really is the end of the road for Kreider, I hope he has been mentoring Cuylle or Othmann or whoever, because his net front play was IMO one of the biggest and most consistent drivers of PP success over this stretch of elite play.

In fairness, they did seem surprised that the coaching staff hasn't tried something different when they're 2/ almost 40. (now 2/41)

Not just Laf's missed shot but Broz hit the crossbar on another beautiful pass from Gabe. He could have had a few points last night - which would have been amazing - but his play was fantastic. We got to see his IQ and playmaking skills against NHL players. Right away he stood out.

Kreider only has 6 PPGs this year. 2 years ago, he only had 8, but he had 36 goals overall, and that was in between years of 26 and 18 PPGs. I can't recall a single deflection goal from him this year.
Maybe teams are doing a better job of defending it and maybe we aren't trying it nearly as much as a result. Or maybe Kreider's skills have slipped to where he is no longer as good at deflecting pucks. Likely it's a combination of factors.
And then there's Maude (Mika). His one-timer used to be a real threat on the PP. Between 2017-18 and 2023-24, he averaged just shy of 14 goals per year on the PP. This year he has 6.
Since Panarin has been a Ranger, his PP goals are fairly steady. 7, 5 (42 games), 5, 9, 11, 8. His assists are way down though because Kreider and Mika aren't scoring.
Fox scored 6 PPGs last year but scored between 0 and 2 every other year. He has 1 this year. His assists this year are the lowest since his rookie season when he was splitting time with TDA.
There have definitely been some shifts in terms of strategy, but those shifts are likely due to prior strategies (Mika one timer, Kreider deflection), no longer working as well as they once did. I have a hard time identifying what strategies they are actually employing now, but whatever they are, they aren't working.

Besides Mika being MIA with the one-timer, I don't recall a whole lot of good shots being generated from the outside. Shots seem to miss the net a lot or are weak or are not good for tipping.

Every time the opposition sets up camp in our own zone, I swear that I hear the Benny Hill theme playing.....
What gets me is that neither Bread nor Fox shoot the puck where Kreider can get his stick on it. Typically, if Kreider misses, the puck goes thru and you either have the goalie make the stop with a face off, a rebound opportunity, or a goal. It’s obvious they’ve lost confidence in him. If they are not going to utilize him in that manner, why is he out there? You would think for one game that you would force feed him pucks to see if at least one would go in. The answer to what happened to the PP, Kreider.

When my father-in-law used live with us - he often had this great word in Russian that he typically used for something that did NOT entice negative reaction from him that roughly translates into English as something like "bearable".It's not bad!

A defensive system that suits the players and a breakout that allows us to keep the puck when it exits would turn this team around. They're tired before they get out of their end. I think with Perrault, Othmann, and Berard added to this next year, provided they are given proper minutes along with a good system can easily make this team back in the hunt. It starts in our own end.
