Post-Game Talk: This team has a problem in net

Our D has to clean up the front of the net and tie guys up but he also needs to make the saves.

You think it will be easier in the playoffs for our forwards. Vegas will roll over us with their size and quality D if Skinner doesn't out perform Hill.
He shouldn’t be letting out rebounds that hit him in the stomach.

Nah man. HFOil has become pretty clueless. He's absolutely right. Every goal that goes in someone is whining and crying to fire the goalie or the coach. It's literally believed that EVERY goal is due to bad goal tending and every goal we score is deserved or a high skill play or shot

Marner scores thru a screen....it's Skinners fault!! Bouchard scores thru a screen....what a goal!!!

Skinner gets beat on a post....he looks terrible. Woll gets beat on 3......we got outplayed by goal tending again

2 goals were scored on point blank rebounds where the D could have stopped if played properly......F+++ Stuart Skinner!!! Nuge and another Oiler were stuffed on the goal line by TO"s D.....We got out goalied again lolol

Nylander scores 1 of 3 breakaways last nite....it's Skinner sucks!!!!! How many breakaways did McDavid have last night? I can sure as shit guarantee say if he scored 1 or 2 this fan base would be praising him

Woll let's in 4 goals but we lose 4-3...it's we lost b/c of Skinner. Why can't we get goal tending like TO did?

It's comical at this point how illogical this place has become
And then you have the same people defending every goal, wristers from the point and it’s not his fault.

His stats suck this year.

He sucks this year.

Were the Oilers on a delayed penalty when the non-goal was scored? I thought I heard we were going on the PP. Then the Oilers scored. If the play was determined to be offside, we should have been on the PP following the review.
Cuthbert mistakenly said Oilers were going on the powerplay when he saw Skinner heading for the bench. There was no delayed penalty.

Haven't read this thread or the GDT but I'm assuming Moustache's fanclub is defending him with some variation of these talking points:

-he only makes 2.6 million
-not his fault
-his numbers since *insert date* means he's good
-his numbers against teams that aren't in the bottom of the league don't count because *reasons*
-blaming the D
-blaming the coach
-blaming the forwards
-just had a kid, lack of sleep
-"no goalies make those saves"

It's criminal to tie McDavid's legacy to these Moustache shenanigans. Get a f***ing goalie.
The bolded is 100% correct. He's making backup money so he should be a backup. Quit cheaping out on goaltending and get a legitimate starter. I firmly believe we win the last 2 Cups with a good goalie in net.

Bottom line you have to be able to win games in the playoffs 2-1, 1-0. I don’t care the talent you have on offense, top level goalies and top level defenses are going to shut you down some games. I am not advocating getting rid of Skinner, we need a solid veteran backup who if Skinner shits the bed in the playoffs you have a quality alternative. Skinner just lets in too many soft goals at times.

We have seen times where teams end up winning the cup and they switched goalies during the playoffs and the backup got hot. Skinner/Pickard going into the playoffs would be one of the poorest tandems of any playoff team, not a recipe for winning a cup.

Nah. You're arguing against guys that were doing HOF shit in other rounds and were clearly playing injured.

You know, actual elite, franchise players, just to prop up some mediocre goalie. It's mindboggling stuff

Bob is inconsistent but there's a reason he got paid and Stu Skinner will be lucky to get a raise (aside from if this idiot org keeps him because they're nice and will pay him more just because), Bob is an actual elite goalie, Skinner is not.
His shtick so tired, so old and frankly so embarrassing. This guy keeps blaming 2 generational players who are the ENTIRE REASON THEY GOT TO GAME 7 OF THE FINAL to defend a truly average/mediocre/subpar goalie. It's the most embarrassing take currently on HF and he bleats it over and over every time Skinner shits the bed (which is very often and basically every time he plays an actual good, top 10 team in the league).

f***ing embarrassing. Has to be related to Moustache.

If the moustache wasn’t consistently giving away games in other series the oilers would potentially be healthier

Also of mention. Bobby McMann has our number. Dude has rather pedestrian numbers versus any other team except for us. Good ole Wainwright boy.

I certainly wouldn’t want to face the Leafs in a Cup Final. They would beat us in 5 max. Too many motivated players who bring their “A” game against us
Loved the interview with his parents last night. Dad appears to be the strong silent type ;), didnt get a word in edgewise. Good Alberta kid. My kids played a lot of games in their rec centre. Nice facility for a smaller town.

I just rewatched the sequence…Chris Cuthbert says “penalty coming up… or is there?… Oilers just pulled the goalie”.

No refs hands went up.. Cuthbert just sucks.
In his defence how is he really to know what is a penalty in Gary’s NHL.

Officiating is as questionable as Skinner’s goaltending most games.

Yeah, and if he stayed in net for the Canucks series they never would have made it to the WCF.
These people are like religious zealots or flat earthers. Doesn't matter how many facts you give them or how much proof you present, they will cling to some arbitrary stat or one particular game to hold onto their opinion. Or they will blame 2 of the best players in the world.

These people will hold their breath and stamp their feet until they pass out reciting the phrase "he only makes 2.6" before they'd ever blame their beloved Moustache.

If these were isolated events you'd have an argument, but it's not. It's a pattern.

Every metric you want to use shows that Skinner is a liability. Every single one.

Fans that watch all of the games see that Skinner is disproportionately the second best goaltender on the ice.

It's not rocket science.

Except for the fact that the rocket science (advanced stats) also show he's the single greatest weakness on this hockey club.

My questions to the Skinner supporters is what would it take for you to stop supporting and excusing him? How low does his save percentage have to get? How bad does his goals saved above expectation have to get? Please describe the situation in which you would be willing to admit that the Oilers need an upgrade it net. If you're unable, or unwilling to do so, then you're clearly lost so far in the weeds that it's pointless even talking about it.

Why is the blame always squarely on Skinner? Not the inability to score goals, or clear the front of the net instead of opponents having free reign to screen or tip pucks? The increased amount of break aways this season? Or a goal is only a bad goal that is scored on Skinner, or that the other teams goalie is Hasek despite letting in bad goals...

Look at Hill's or Blackwoods (recently) struggles and that even the best goalie in the game in Shesterkin can't save the Rangers and has had terrible games, or Hellebuyk being terrible in the playoffs last year.

If in an alternate universe the Oilers had Hellebuyk in net for game seven last year and everything played out the same. I doubt there would be any where near the blame on him, and there would be post after post of this teams stars failing to score. And to say it wouldn't have gotten to game seven with Hellebuyk in net, remember Skinner made it to game seven of the finals and gave the Oilers a chance to win verses Hellebuyk was out in the first round, and lost in the first round the year before posting <900 in four of five games vs Vegas... And Hellebuyk also let in four goals on 29 shots last night.... The bias to dump everything on Skinner regardless of his performance is appalling. The whole team can fail to show up for periods or a whole game and its only his fault?

I'm not here saying he's a great goalie, but at a .920 over the last two months and his performance in eliminations games last spring deserve some credit, against the constant bashing every two weeks when he does have a poor game. As other goalies don't have a poor game? Take a gander at Luongo's and Lundqvist's playoff stats and you will find poor save percentages in elimination games.

so he's excused from contributing in the final 2 games because "Conn Smythe baby!" LOL
sweet logic
their 50 goal scorer showed up in Game 7 but McDavid is excused because "Conn Smythe" LMAO

dude shows up 6 months ago and starts making rules around here
lol

it's hilarious. all your posts make me laugh. all the usual talking points covered. Keep blaming McDrai and defending Moustache. It'd be funnier if it wasn't so sad. So so predictable and sad.

Because that's how it goes when you have a generational talent and haven't won ... the microscope should be intense.

Adin Hill has a Stanley Cup ring (probably the main reason they won) and is .932 and .931 is his last two playoffs, Blackwood is .920 in Colorado and has far better overall stats than Skinner this year even with his San Jose games factored in.

Skinner's numbers this year are mediocre and his record overall is poor, his numbers against top teams are horribad. If anything he gets treated with kiddie gloves in Edmonton. If he was in Montreal or Toronto, he would be getting roasted non-stop by the fanbase and media, he should be thanking his lucky stars he plays in Edmonton and gets the huge benefit of the doubt of the quiet as a church mouse media here.

It’s been explained on this site time and time again. The team doesn’t trust him, they play different in front of him expecting the early weak goals or at some point, he's inconsistent in small segments where he loses games for them
- see last night as an example of all the above. He’s not a goalie that this team is going to rally behind and win a championship with/for.

It’s game 7 you either find a way or you don’t. McDavid found a way to pointless in two straight games for the first time the playoffs in games 6 and 7 of the final. Meanwhile Stuart skinner lets in 3 total goals between games 6 and 7 of the Stanley cup final but it’s not possible to win with him.
lol such a clown take. Blaming Connor is such a joke. Thanks for putting us on your back and getting us to game 7. f*** me. Embarrassing fanbase.

2-9-2
.872 save %
-8 goals saved above expected.

Results against the top 10 teams. The teams that you'll play in the playoffs
Explain that Skinner fanboys. f***ing joke.

Expecting Spec, of all people, to understand something is really the problem. He might be dumbest Edmonton sports reporter in history, at least for those that made it to a relatively large stage. He is beyond stupid and has no concept of almost anything. He is a clickbait journalist with no understanding of the game whatsoever.

Every normal stat, every advanced stat, and every eye-test, tells you that Skinner is a below average tender. Anybody who doesn't see this is being willfully ignorant, or really is just ignorant.
But Bustachio’s California Closet commercial is all over the broadcast. Like we don’t see enough of his fat ass. Pickard should of got the call in this game after Skinner’s dismal shootout versus Detroit.

So you're just clueless?

Blame the best player of this generation who broke records, but not the mediocre goaltender who tried his best to lose in the second round?

Look at Swayman last year and now. Good defense can make a goalie look incredible, unless that goalie is mediocre, then defense can make him look average...
Boston defence is nearly the same this year as last. On paper at least, might even be considered better, with the addition of Zadorov.

Klingberg's "reward" is a #5 defender who can quarterback the 2nd PP. We didn't really need that. We sure as hell don't need that over a goalie, proven and reliable #4, and a middle six winger. The same goes for Kapanen (bottom six winger) and Regula (#6/7 D whenever healthy).

Bowman is either opposed to making or unable to make more substantial deals. Neither is good for the org at this point in their competitive window. If Stan wasn't ready to come in and part with good futures for good assets- or if he’s such damaged goods in the GM fraternity that no one wants to deal with him- he's not the right guy, and needs to be replaced Monday morning. Waiver claims aren’t gonna cut it.
Klingberg is a test drive for a few weeks and then they can decide if they want to keep him or move on from him and pursue something else. If the guy can revert to anywhere near where he was a few short year ago with the new hips, it could really turn out well. No harm no foul as far as I'm concerned.
