This is Goodbye

I’ve also taken a step back since the 2021/2022. That year I watched every game as I did for the previous 20+ years . The loss to Colorado had me far to emotional . I had to reevaluate my fandom . Last year , I probably watched about 70 games but would turn them off etc . This year I’ve already missed two full games . Better for my mental health . I have also increased my NFL and Premier League fandom .

I had a more thought out post that got deleted so hopefully the mods are ok with this one.

I just wanted to say that my time as an Oilers fan has expired. I will miss the conversations, the memes, the TOPPEP magic and the arguments over 13th forwards and 7th defenseman.

Love you guys, and be kind to one another.
But….. will you still come back to see my splits progress?????? Take care sir!

"A bad start where my team losses 3 games and now im gonna stop cheering them and cheer for a franchise that hasn't won anything ever."

A lot of awesome takes in here, Im noting user names for when they inevitably return once the wins start and for the play off run.

So they can start a discussion about why they left. People regularly use this to express their level of disgust with the team. Sometimes it is for attention. Sometimes it is their only outlet. People who love the team and the sport don't "quit" being a fan. If you no longer love the team or the sport, go do what makes you happy. Sail on sailor.
I wanted to give more insight but wasn’t able to. I waited a week because I didn’t want this to be considered a cry for help or an impulse decision based on performance or short term frustration on my end. Really I just want to say bye to you guys because some of you, I have known (HF known) for over 20 years.

It wasn't a shot. Lots of people make posts like that. Each with their own reasons. I was going to hit your post with humour, but in deference to your long standing as a poster, I decided against it.

I'm finding it increasingly hard to care as much as I used to. Maybe since the team is now a regular playoff team it's easier to just check out until playoffs and wait to see what happens.

They need to actually earn their stripes though.

My son and I had our moment when the Oilers beat the Flames in the playoffs. He doesn't even bother asking about the Oilers any more. We'll watch again if the team makes the playoffs. If not, no big deal. There are a million other things to do with our time.

I've tried to stop being an Oiler fan and pick another team. Didn't work.

I couldn't handle the clutch and grab Era and my nhl watching declined greatly and I took years off.

Strangley enough. As much as the decade of darkness was brutal it kept my interest much more than the clutch and gran Era.

My interest has declined the last few years bit that is just life being busy. As bad as things can seem... they were worse.

Take a break and come back refreshed.

I have to agree with you. I have one foot out of the door. That’s largely due to how the Oilers are being run and the fact that we have a ton of guys who are overpaid and can’t carry their own weight

Not sure about being a real fan in the first place, if true. But I'm sure you'll be on when the train starts rolling again.;):D

Sorry to see you go @Mowzie. But I must say the NHL makes it very hard to keep up the passion. I fully understand how someone could just wake up one day and say the effort is not worth it.
I don't. You don't go from being a full blown fan to dropping a team overnight. Ask a Detroit Lions fan or Chicago Cubs fan (prior to them winning it all a few years ago). I can certainly see interest waning due to other pursuits as life gets busy or other things come along, or the team having long periods of suckage, but most people usually stick with a team through thick and thin. Not watching as much or having other interests doesn't make a person any less of a fan.

You can still be a fan without being as invested with your time. I think the forum drives some people nuts. I have found that since I have kept the same 5-6 people on my block list permanently the forum is much more enjoyable.

But like you I am investing much less time into the team than I used to, well into hockey in general not just the Oilers. Bettmans Bullshit League has me enjoying the game far less knowing that they actively bend the rules they don't create on the fly, rig the draft lottery for their favoured teams since the Oilers won 4 of them, and the DPOS is really just an guy in an ape suit dropping a ball into a Plinko Machine.
Exactly. The fan part never goes away. The time and effort does.

I see a path towards myself taking a long break from this team too.

If this season goes totally bad and can't be redeemed:
- they might as well look at trading Draisaitl in the summer, since he probably won't want to re-sign, and it would be stupid to take the risk of keeping an un-signed Draisaitl with 1 year left on his contract and potentially lose him in a year for a way worse return (at the deadline) or nothing (off-season).
- if they trade Draisaitl, I wouldn't expect another contract with McDavid either and he might really be serious about wanting out. In that case, moving him sooner rather than later would make some sense to get a better return by being pro-active and shopping him to the highest bidder that he actually wants to play for (has a NMC), rather than wasting a year of everyone's time where we probably wouldn't be a contender without Draisaitl anyway.

Get a haul of picks and prospects for both players. Don't do the idiotic Flames thing and trade for expensive players coming off of peak seasons - just blow it up and accept that another rebuild is coming, and trade the other players that have some value too.

It's not what I want to happen, but things are looking pretty dicey here, and McDavid and Draisaitl at 27 and 28 years old aren't going to have the patience that they did at 22,23,24. And if it did happen, I could easily see myself becoming very casual about the team for a few years, if not outright jumping ship.
I agree 100% I fully expect a rebuild once the mcdrai era is over in 2 years. And I pray to god they don’t try to be competitive with this team even with what they get in return as if those two leave I want a clean slate to get the taste out of my mouth any player on this roster should be gone, only players I’d be okay with keeping would be Holloway and Broberg every other player will have to be shipped out before the oilers are relevant

Trading mcdrai and going full rebuild would land you a a whole slew of prospects and picks in which if you have proper drafting and development Would be your future depth players (like what Chicago had just before kane and toews) while you suck for 2-3 years picking up a Center and a D to build around

Knowing oilers gonna oil they will trade Mcdavid to chicago for Seth jones and hall.

You don’t have to go. Support the team but don’t take it too seriously when they lose.

You could be like me and come to the realization that sports are not that important in a world where the country to the south of us is drifting into fascism, wars are being waged in Europe and the Middle East, people are starving and homeless, and there is corruption throughout our provincial and federal governments; I could go on but you get the message.

My interest in the NHL is dying a painful death too. Bettman has ruined the league for me a in a lot facets like officiating and the blatant cap circumvention by Vegas and the Lightning. It really is no coincidence a Canadian team hasn't won the cup since he's been in power. After how they handled the Nurse-Pietrangelo situation last year, I basically asked myself what's the point in caring so much anymore when I know any Canadian team is going to get fisted in the playoffs. Look what happened against Anaheim...looking back, that was the beginning of the end for me.

I never missed an Oilers game and would watch other teams play but this and priorities have taken a lot of passion away. This year, I've watched 1/5 so far but I hang around this board because I love the conversations, the memes, gifs and all the colorful characters we have here.

Guaranteed that a-hole Bettman had a jolly good chuckle when he found out McDavid is out and the Oilers were already looking like dogshit.

@Mowzie, if you come back to check on this thread, take care and in my opinion, you'd always be welcomed back.

This made me howl but yet it's totally plausible with these shitheads running things.

As I mentioned before, me falling out of love with this team is not related to the team’s performance or life just getting busy all of a sudden. If either was the case I would have dropped them a decade ago. I have always been able to balance life and make time for the Oilers too.

More on the cap circumcision this season Colorado is doing it with landeskog if he’s playing game 1 of this years playoffs that’s a red flag
