I had a more thought out post that got deleted so hopefully the mods are ok with this one.

I just wanted to say that my time as an Oilers fan has expired. I will miss the conversations, the memes, the TOPPEP magic and the arguments over 13th forwards and 7th defenseman.

Love you guys, and be kind to one another.

My time is done as well, I will follow the Coyotes now and hope all those draft picks, and for a new arena. I was hoping for better for McDavid and Dri and will be watching out of the corner of my eye and cheering them on, I already decided after they start to leaving next year I wouldn't follow this club anymore, so this just makes that early. Used to be a huge fan of both this team and the Eskimos, Edmonton politics ruined all that, best of luck!

The world could definitely learn from the bolded. You will be missed, best of wishes to you.

Cheering for a new team or just done with the NHL?

I get it. I was just about there in the Eakins era and then we got McDavid. People don’t wanna talk about it but this year is massive, basically determines whether Drai stays or go, which likely determines the same for Connor. We need a Cup this year.. it’s not looking good.

I’m sticking around for as long as McDavid is here, I can’t buy in to another rebuild if they fail with McDrai for 10 years.

See you back here in March after the Oilers go on their traditional run the last 3 months of the season to get into the playoffs.

Done with the Oilers and NHL in general. Me falling out of love is not related to the on ice product or lack thereof.

My deleted post gave more insight but this post is not related to them not performing up to expectations. I normally digested 8-10 hours of Oilers content on game days and this week I haven’t watched, listened to or followed anything outside of customers telling me the basics and catching stuff on social media here and there. Losses don’t bother me anymore, and I waited over a week to post to make sure this wasn’t an impulsive reactionary post.

I’m done with this team for the foreseeable future. Anyone who wants to keep in touch can DM me for my social media.

Hopefully you can come back without spending as much time on Oilers content. When I was living outside Edmonton I would watch the odd game but mostly just highlight and some time on the message board, probably around 30 minutes a day on NHL content. In an Edmonton winter with not much to do I probably spend a few hours a day on NHL content and another few hours playing video games.

You can still be a fan without being as invested with your time. I think the forum drives some people nuts. I have found that since I have kept the same 5-6 people on my block list permanently the forum is much more enjoyable.

But like you I am investing much less time into the team than I used to, well into hockey in general not just the Oilers. Bettmans Bullshit League has me enjoying the game far less knowing that they actively bend the rules they don't create on the fly, rig the draft lottery for their favoured teams since the Oilers won 4 of them, and the DPOS is really just an guy in an ape suit dropping a ball into a Plinko Machine.

I was just wanting to show how someone like me who was so invested and consumed so much content, could lose interest over night. I used to listen to games and keep track of stats, 3 stars etc, and always followed every game for the past 30+ years. Didn’t matter if my brother was getting married, my wife was being cut open to remove a baby, or I was on the other side of the world at 4am. This week I chose not to watch 4 games and the outcome didn’t bother me.

You will be missed it was a great time, largely lol.

When it’s my turn to leave please tell me how you did it because I’m a hopeless addict.

I see a path towards myself taking a long break from this team too.

If this season goes totally bad and can't be redeemed:
- they might as well look at trading Draisaitl in the summer, since he probably won't want to re-sign, and it would be stupid to take the risk of keeping an un-signed Draisaitl with 1 year left on his contract and potentially lose him in a year for a way worse return (at the deadline) or nothing (off-season).
- if they trade Draisaitl, I wouldn't expect another contract with McDavid either and he might really be serious about wanting out. In that case, moving him sooner rather than later would make some sense to get a better return by being pro-active and shopping him to the highest bidder that he actually wants to play for (has a NMC), rather than wasting a year of everyone's time where we probably wouldn't be a contender without Draisaitl anyway.

Get a haul of picks and prospects for both players. Don't do the idiotic Flames thing and trade for expensive players coming off of peak seasons - just blow it up and accept that another rebuild is coming, and trade the other players that have some value too.

It's not what I want to happen, but things are looking pretty dicey here, and McDavid and Draisaitl at 27 and 28 years old aren't going to have the patience that they did at 22,23,24. And if it did happen, I could easily see myself becoming very casual about the team for a few years, if not outright jumping ship.

Amen to that. :)

Of course you can still be a fan if you stop watching for a little while. I've taken a few several game breaks here and there, especially in the decade of darkness. It's kinda like going to quiet room and taking some deep breaths after having an argument with your wife (or at least that's what I like to do lol.) Once things quiet down you can make up and everything goes back to normal.

Man... I get what the op is saying. It's hard being a big fan of any nhl team nevermind being a fan of the Edmonton Oilers. SOOOOOOOOOO many things have to go right to get a cup. Once you get into the playoffs, a lot of what it takes is luck. We would of owned Vegas if the goaltenders were swapped and probably would of the won the cup too. So incredibly frustrating even now.

Sorry to see you go @Mowzie. But I must say the NHL makes it very hard to keep up the passion. I fully understand how someone could just wake up one day and say the effort is not worth it.

It will probably just happen gradually, and will take many years. I've gone from being a hockey addict, who would never miss a game ever, and watch as many out of town games as possible, to rarely watching non Oiler games, except blips here and there, and not really bothered anymore when I miss an Oiler game. And this is 100% due to Gary and his cronies and the way they continue to operate a garbage league, with seemingly disdain for the fans who the game is meant for. You will slowly gravitate towards something else that you find more entertaining and less frustrating. For me that is NFL football. If you would have said that to me five years, I would have laughed in your face, but here we are.

You get to watch the most exciting player in the current era - why leave now?
So they can start a discussion about why they left. People regularly use this to express their level of disgust with the team. Sometimes it is for attention. Sometimes it is their only outlet. People who love the team and the sport don't "quit" being a fan. If you no longer love the team or the sport, go do what makes you happy. Sail on sailor.
