Looking at it from the Flyers' perspective, sure, adding McDavid makes sense. There isn't a team in the NHL where it doesn't make sense to add the best player in the league. But this still isn't engaging with why McDavid would choose Philly specifically, if given every possible option. Would you come to Philadelphia if you could follow Gretzky's path to LA? Kopitar and Kempe expire after 25-26, that's 12.5M of opened space for McDavid right there. Or go to New York, who frees up money by not resigning Panarin? Or Toronto, who gets back a ton of space by replacing Tavares with a JAG, and would be able to add McDavid to Matthews, Marner, and Nylander (plus everything we've been told about his GF connection)? Or Vegas, who could do the most Vegas thing possible by replacing Eichel with McDavid? Or any of 10 other clubs that would give their left nut to add him? Or stay in Edmonton, where you've already made your life and are the closest thing imaginable to a god walking the earth?

Sure, it'd be a dream come true to add McDavid to Philly. The point isn't whether it's a good idea to pitch him on coming here. The point is that no matter how much sense it makes for us, we're one of the long shots at best, because we aren't going to get him paid as well as going to one of the three king shit media markets, we aren't his surest shot to win going forward, and we don't have any form of home town advantage.

My original point is that their statements and moves make it seem like they want McDavid. The flight just adds to that theory imo.

As to why Philly? They will have more cap space than all of those teams and not have to lose talent to get it. The talent ideally come from incoming rookies and upcoming draft picks. Or move those picks for young talent on a good deal. All of those teams are peaking or on the other side of their windows now. We are talking in 2 seasons. Why would he want to go to Toronto to ride the decline? Why stay in Edm? They have the two best players in the league this year. When the pens did that they won multiple cups.

Let's say McDavid is their grand plan.

What exactly is "New" about that approach with this organization?
Exactly. This move is what I would expect them to want to do. Even if it’s to sell tickets.

reason #1 : if Mcjesus wants out of EDM its to move to a legit SC hoisting caliber team...

which the Flyers are basicly never going to be.

hes not leaving one pipedream for another.. not for any amount of cash.. hes already earned plenty.

Look, the Flyers SHOULD absolutely look into bringing McDavid here and should do everything in their power to do so. He's the best player in the game today and IMO the best player to ever play the game.

I believe that the Flyers believe that they can bring him here but that is the type of hubris that has gotten themselves in to the situation they're in. They can't do a self evaluation to see that they're not a destination and they don't have a team to get to that next level. There will be equal money and equal rosters out there for McDavid to pick for himself.

I can see the mental path that they're taking for that to be the plan. I just don't know what they do when they rightfully find out that the man has no interest in coming here. They'll pivot to something lesser and they'll wind up right where they've always been.

They're putting all of their eggs in that McDavid basket. Just as they've put all of their eggs in the Michkov needs to be Kucherov+ in order to compete. Just as they seemingly are acquiring all of these first round picks in order to package them for a top pick and get a top talent which is something that never happens.

They believe that they can do these things but they just can't, Nemo.

Real stars don’t pick teams because of young developing players. That’s just not how it works. They go for a contender or location. Or both.

In 2 years, you could be looking at completely different situations in places like Montreal and Chicago let alone the Stars or Canes or Devils. LA and NY are always threats. Florida and Vegas could free up enough space. I’d bet the Flyers aren’t the last choice among that group by the time it rolls around. But they’re sure as hell not first either.

Odds are he just stays in Edmonton. He’s probably had the worst GM’s in the league since he’s been there with Chia & Holland which is more so the problem than anything. The two of them absolutely failed to build around McDavid & Draisaitl. Those two have kept the floor high there often while the GM’s have kept the ceiling lower.

However I seriously doubt McDavid or really any player in his shoes would see it that way.

A note for my fellow Canadians. Just checked the remaining schedule and of the final 24 games, it appears that 13 of them are going to be on TV in Ontario, now that TSN is picking up more games in addition to the SN ones.

Oh, God, hasn't America threatened Canada enough recently? More Flyers games is tantamount to a declaration of war.
