This is not a defense of the recent trade (or any moves for that matter), but if nothing else the team is basically looking at starting scratch from a cap perspective. Now, they had to dig out of the cap issues that they created and they could be in a much better position even if they cleared the cap they did with Farabee and Frost if they had gotten a better return, but it will be interesting to see what they can do in the next few years with that cap space. I would assume, based on past actions that they will do a bunch of dumb shit and get themselves right back in to cap hell, but perhaps they make some shrewd moves to wheel and deal that cap space and make good signings. Unlikely but at least there is a possibility of something to look forward to in the next few years...
They'll have I'm not great with math so my numbers could be off but it looks like with Ryan Ellis counting against the cap next year they have about $72 million tied up with about 7 empty roster spots. I believe the cap is going to be $92 million next year so that's about $20 million if no additional moves are made between now and the deadline. The year after Hayes and Atkinson come off for another $5 million. If they play this right all these dumb moves they've made recently could be forgotten. Obviously, if they never made the dumb moves they'd already be in a better position, but that ship has sailed. I'm stupid for thinking things might change but you never know!
