Well, it would help if we could find these guys.
One reason they're high on McDonald, big (6'4 230), tough but reportedly can also play defense.
Allison had potential, but couldn't stay healthy and the dings added up.
Funny how you are eating up the Hunter hype. Have you really seen him play at all?

Seeing how well the Flyers do at drafting/development of defensemen how much confidence you have that they can unearth a quality NHL dman in Hunter?

I'm looking forward to the Phantoms this season to watch a bunch of players, McDonald being the top prospect, but also Rizzo, Tuomaala, Gendron, Desnoyers, Avon, Samson, Andrae and Grans.

McDonald was named Hockey East's best defensive defenseman as a freshman with Northeastern, at age 20. Held his own in the AHL, showed well in development camp.

The late seasons games weren't televised, so I'll have to wait until October to get a look-see.
Two things I'll focus on, mobility and exiting the D-zone. Not expecting much offense from him, but he just needs to be a rock on defense and get the puck up ice.

Not a lot to look forward too really. Maybe 1/2 full time NHL players out of the bunch. Don't you always look forward to the Phantoms as you always hype up their prospects.

He held his own because he was used in s sheltered role. I will actually give cement head a compliment. He eased him in. I myself am just amazed the hype "jonesy" has provided around this guy.

Going to be comical when he doesn't amount to much. A smart team just lets him go about his business instead of treating him like he was a 1st rd pick with expectations. Then again, the cupboard is pretty bare, so they have to sell his "size" and what not.

If your top 6/top 4 prospects are spending a couple years in the AHL, you're in trouble!

The AHL team tends to be loaded with later round picks, Rizzo (7th), Tuomaala (2nd), Gendron (7th), Desnoyers (5th), Avon (UDFA), Samson (6th), Andrae (2nd) and Grans (2nd).

What you're looking for are surprises, guys who improve their skating, their fundamentals, their vision, etc. and go from suspect to prospect to call-up. Most won't, but a few will.

Flyers been in trouble for over a decade now.

Do you have faith the Flyers can develop any of the above mentioned into everyday NHL players? There is no one in that group that stands out. Or as you said will show they are too good for that league.

How hard is it to draft/develop a 4th line player? Flyers can't even do that hence the overpayments of GH and ND

Hathaway is not overpaid.
According to Edge, at 6'3 208 he's a similar skater to TK.

Had 14 and 13 ES goals in Washington before falling to 8 last season.
Last season was a dominant possession forward, CF 50.45%, xGF 56.27%, HDCF 57.27%

He's where the NHL is going with bottom six forwards, guys with speed who play a physical game and can forecheck top lines - if you can't score, wear down the other team's best players.

I cannot express how little value should be placed on a “Best Defensive Defenseman” award from an insular place like Hockey East. That’s a polling of 12 HCs. Add an order of magnitude of irrelevance for pro projections based on that.
For a freshman, it's not bad. Since people tend to have recency bias, to catch the eye of opposing HCs is a good sign. At least it suggests he's a quick study.

He is overpaid. No way should have what is now a 3 year contract. That is an overpayment. What he did in Wash has no bearing on what he has done and will do on the Flyers. He had a heart attack when the Flyers approached him for that ext. He didnt even see that coming.

Develop your own 4th line guys and you save over a million dollars and term.

A smart GM would have moved him, let alone sign him in the first place seeing where the Flyers are at. He plays no role in the win/lose column for the Flyers. No reason for a 2 year ext. None.

He wasn't talking basic 4th liners, he was talking tough guys who can play.
A lot harder to find.
Hathaway fits the bill, probably why they extended him.

You have it backwards, and that's the same exact problem management has. "Tough guy" should not be the primary characteristic you're looking for; "can play" should be.

And frankly, I don't give a rat's ass if they win a single fight all season, because you don't get points for winning fights.

What's a better use of resources: Garnet Hathaway, an effective defensive winger who can chip in a goal here and there, and is willing to throw the body or drop the gloves if necessary, or Nic Deslauriers, a traffic cone who gets positively caved in on the ice, but can once and a while leave a fist-shaped indent on someone's cheek? We know they can find Hathaway types, they found actual Garnet Hathaway, why not go get more players like him, and fewer like St. Nic?

Teal deer: we are a better team with 2 Garnet Hathaway and 0 Nic Deslauriers than 1 of each.

Hathaway and Deslauriers are two different players. GH has a place in the league since he possesses some skills. He can keep up with the pace of the game; score some points and play a physical game.
Deslauriers has nothing but a fist and he isn't even that good with that at this point in his career. He should be sent to LHV where he would fit in with many of the players that are already in that League.

It’s no accident both Stanley Cup finalists this year pay each of their 4th line guys $750k. The Hathaway contract is ludicrous and reveals zero roster building acumen in Flyer world

Hathaway blocks no one, and he's the prototype for what they want in the bottom six.

Flyers are thin at the top of the prospect pool, neither elite talents (with Michkov on the NHL team) nor NHL ready players (most of their better prospects are 2-3 years away, and that includes the guys they draft in 2025).

Closest in terms of playing this year, Lycksell, Eklind, Abols, Tuomaala, Avon, Desnoyers, Gendron in that order.
