Whether they think that's a plausible thing to happen or not, the far more likely explanation at this juncture is "we're all headed back to Philly for the game on Saturday, it's convenient to book one flight instead of two, let's just do the polite thing and offer him a ride."
Also, literally every team in the NHL will promise him the moon, sun, and stars if he doesn't re-up before hitting FA, so they're going to need a lot better marketing pitch than "hey, remember that one plane ride? That was neat, come sign here."

Also pretty sure he resigns in Edmonton. The dude actually likes it there and is a pretty private introvert. His wife also just opened a bar/restaurant in Edmonton. I guess if there is even the slightest chance of getting the best player in the world however, you gotta go for it.
