Gropp 2.0

IMG_1041.gif

All I ever could think of with Gropp.

He's on the 4th line which remains ridiculous. It's not like everyone is outplaying him. Put him with Panarin and see if he can shoot it in the net, or put him with laffy and Miller and see if something sparks. At this point kreider and Mika can finish the season together on the 4th line. Mika starts getting points here and there but he's charming soft and gets manhandled by smaller players all the time. It's time to move on if they can find a way this summer. The team needs an overhaul and there's no risk of sabotaging the team identity the way Nashville did to themselves last summer bc right now NYR does not have an actual team identity to build around. From that standpoint they are very much like the rangers prior to dubinsky and Callahan coming onto the team.
He’s on the 4th line because the coach doesnt trust his defensive reads. What I don’t understand is why the coach trusts anyone defensive reads. What makes Othmann worse defensively than Panarin or Lafreniere or no check Zibanejad or can’t clear Kreider?

We are very far removed from all of those homegrown, heart and soul teams of the late 80s, early 90s, late 2000s into 2010s. Those likable players that we drafted or stole in a trade are long gone. The players who played with a chip on their shoulder and with purpose. That potential does exist in Hartford but that requires a coach to play them. And Lavy, just like every Rangers coach aside from Torts, Renney, and Nielsen, just isn't that guy. This philosophy is why we are a franchise mired in mediocrity for the better part of 85 years.

Like it's making any difference now?
Panarin is like a drug or an "easy button" for this team. His style of hockey is prone to turnovers and difficult to replicate but he's got so much talent that he still ends up scoring points in a regular basis.

Panarin is an elite player in terms of offensive skill but not what this team needs going forward. Another team with a solid foundation looking for that missing piece could benefit from Panarin while the Rangers fix their foundation.

I’ve realized that the arguments about whether or not moving Fox or Laf or Kreider or Shesterkin are absurd. Who gives a f***? Why should we?

The team isn’t good enough and doesn’t have the assets to build one that is. The pieces that are good won’t be good by the time we ever actually accumulate enough other pieces that would complement them enough that we’d genuinely be competitive.

I mean, let’s face it - pretend Bern was the GM of all 32 teams and Fox straight up could return Draisaitl and Lafreniere + could bring back Eichel and Perrault + KAM could bring back Dahlin… We’d still suck, because our culture and staff and play as a team sucks. And has for decades. Going back to Renney and beyond, we have been a shit passing team that looks slower than we skate and we are ALWAYS talking about the lack of top end talent whether it’s Nash or Gaborik or Richards or St. Louis or Fox or Panarin or a few of them all at once. Because it doesn’t matter if it was McDavid and Makar. It’s NYR. Get used to it.

And even if that weren’t the case and the culture changed and we could draft a few superstars… we paid a spoiled, head case 29 year old goalie 1C money, for the next 8 years, to be too good for us to rack up a few lottery finishes but not good and consistent enough to actually be a genuine difference maker. I mean, really, it’s just an indefensible contract - who f***ing cares what Lebrun or Dreger speculated he may have gotten on the open market? 13M? Sure, enjoy Buffalo. What contender was giving him more than 11.5, plus the extra 8th year, plus the full NMC? Let’s be real clear here: he turns 30 in 9 months and 13M over 7 years is 91M and UFA at 37.5 years old. 11.5M over 8 years is 92M. He had no leverage and still got everything he asked for. Country club… cha-ching, suckers!

Regardless, Fox or Laf or Panarin could be McDavid and the reality would be we should still tear it down to the absolute foundation. The mixture is 100% wrong, the structure is 100% rotten… none of it matters. Fox is a top 3D. Top 10D. Top 40D. Doesn’t matter what you believe. We won’t win anything with or without him. And even if we traded literally every single player on the roster tomorrow, we’d still fail at rebuilding - whether we got incredible home run returns (the likes of which we could never expect from Drury) or abysmal pennies on the dollar and drafted 1OA for three straight years - because the entire organization is just an inept, rotten mess. Who cares? Why care?

At this point, winning is a hilarious fantasy. I don’t care what the record is next year - please find a way to ice a team that isn’t utterly detestable and actually plays entertaining hockey. That’s the only reason I’m here. Entertain me. I know we aren’t winning a Cup in the next decade. At least make the games more enjoyable and the team less hate-worthy.
I don't agree with all of your points but I can get behind this...play entertaining hockey!

This team is lifeless and has no identity aside from the east/west nonsense and praying that Igor can bail out a bad team on a regular basis. Once the PP lost its mojo this team was screwed.

Entertaining hockey without a good record typically means high scoring track meets where defense is optional. I'm not sure how we get there but I'd take that over this product.

This is also why I like Rempe...he's entertaining and seems like a genuinely good guy who loves hockey.

I've been a big fan of Kreider but I'm done with this group. This team has some serious cultural issues that can only be addressed by moving on from the old core.

The mental acumen of a GM that trades a young blossoming Pavel Buchnevich for Sammy Blais and a 2nd should have been a harbinger of things to come for this franchise. Plus I don't understand his fixation with trading 3rd and 4th round picks for below average defenseman who ride the pine or severely underwhelm on the ice.
can this just be pinned to the top of NYR HF until he’s gone? Mental acumen lmao.

It’s crazy how many moves Drury has made that were horrible on day 1. The kind of moves that should all be instant firings because they’re just such clear indicators you have no clue what you’re doing

I don't know. He seemed to give a shit a couple of years ago when he shitcanned John Davidson and Jeff Gorton and gave pizza boy the keys to the castle.

I'm not sure how much of that was Dolan actually paying attention though.

It could just as easily have been Sather managing to get his attention long enough to overthrow management, and then Dolan going back to his default level of attentiveness.

I hate to blame the coach when this core has continued to fail, but the reality is that both the core and the coach need to go. Lavi has no idea what to do at this point, clearly lost the room.
He is absolutely gone after this year, I'm just not sure what the hold up on pulling the trigger early is. People don't go from Presidents Trophy to missing playoffs without losing their job, even if it isn't their fault.

Told you all last summer Drury was the problem with this franchise. Right from the time he was in hartford he's done nothing but screw this franchise over. The absolute worst thing that happened to this franchise was getting rid of Gorton. He's currently building the habs into a team that will take our playoff spot. Idiotic move that was.
Hate to say it, but this franchise was screwed before Drury was even a player here.

This team is a mess. Forwards leaving the defensive zone early all season long, no structure coming through the neutral zone, no one knows where their teammates are on the ice. Absolute mess. This is on the GM and coach.

Couldn't have said it better
