The thing with the Russian photos,

They aren't actually colorized old photos. Prokudin-Gorski used a special camera with three lenses, each equipped with a different colored filter, like this:

Basically, it gave him three negatives of the same image corresponding to the RBG colors:

So by putting his three negatives together, we can actually see the real colors as they were

I looked up those Paris pictures and I found a very interesting one:

Look carefully at that metro ("metropolitain") entrance.

One of Montreal's subway stations (Square Victoria) has an entrance that was donated by Paris in the 60s. I wonder if it's the same as the one in that old picture?

Slightly different topic, but one of my favorite things happening on the internet is the digital colorization of old photos.

I was teaching my students how to do this a couple months ago. It is actually alot of fun. Though I have to say that skin colour is the hardest part to do.
