OT: The Wild Board Jukebox Thread: Part Deux

Yeah, I've been a fan of Myrath for a while now. Not my favorite by any means. But solid proggy power metal. Love the middle East sound to both the music and the vocals.

And a new A-Z (the Alder-Zonder project). Gotta be honest, this one doesn't do much for me. This is probably one of, if not the weakest of the tunes of theirs I've heard between the first album and the other new single from the one upcoming. It isn't terrible, but...meh. Nothing special about it.

Pandemics, power outages, riots, conspiracy theories and whatnot.. Wormwood is your friend in the darkest of times.

New track by Avatar just dropped. This is one band I'd love to see live.
Swedish dudes with facepaint, how unusual...not.

Ooh. Thanks for the reminder. Saw this earlier today on Blabbermouth.com and didn't have the chance to listen to it yet.

Funny enough, before I actually got into them, I saw them open for Mushroomhead at a local bar. I paid almost no attention to them and had honestly forgot they were at that show. Few years later after I got into them, I mention to the buddy I went to the show with that 'I'd love to see them live.' He goes, 'You did, dipshit. They opened for MRH.' 🤣

Crazy how different Johannes is on and off stage. He's such a mellow dude and just totally becomes a different person on stage. They sound f***ing amazing here, but honestly this crowd is pretty lame.

I know a guy who knows a guy who knows him, and he is a really nice dude. The kind of person I would love to sit down and just hang out with.
Most of the swedish dudes who made it is nice people off stage, with a few rotten apples mixed in between. But the worst people are those who didn't quite made it, and it is never their fault in any way shape or form. I's always a conspiracy against them and their big genius. I met a couple of those too. Just a few.

Just me again, posting about those old, boring bands from the west coast of Sweden.
Bet you never heard of these guys.

For those of you that still don't grasp the greatness of Avatar, (I'm not looking at you, @Soldier13Fox, just keep playing that game of yours) just take a look at this treasure of a movie and tell me they're shit.

But to extend the Olive Branch, Mr. Nut, by percentages of bands worldwide, Sweden is probably #1 or #2 for me. Been on a DT bender of late... this song will always be my favorite from them... followed closely by "Lethe."

I'm a bit surprised you don't like them, since you have great taste for good music. Personally I think they have a great sense of humour just like Night Flight Orchestra and doesn't take themselves too seriously. That's why you should watch that movie I posted. I'ts a comedy.
And this video is also comedic. And a really good song, too.
If you don't like this one, well..

Y'know, I said the same thing for a handful of years. Then, one day something clicked. I wouldn't say I have a full album I can get from front to back on, but I do really like a lot of their stuff. That friend I mentioned in the story above, was the same way. He really didn't like them. And then last year, all of a sudden, he came around on them.

Think this was the tune where everything kind of fell into place for me on them:

Incidentally, they'll be here [in Minneapolis] at the Fillmore on Nov 17th this fall.

Yeah, they're f***ing great. Get your tickets as soon as possible, I have a feeling they will sell out in a minute. So it will be your second time seeing them, but the only one you'll remember. And this time you'll never forget it.

Sweden Rock Festival is underway. I'm not blowed away by this year's lineup. Slipknot, Korn, Sex Pistols with someone else than Johnny Rotten, Myles Kennedy, Adrian Vandenberg, Apocalyptica, Gotthard, Eagles of death metal is just meh.

Some good bands though, but Slipknot and Korn being headliners is shaky at best.
But one of the best bands in the history of man, King Diamond, is worth all of the money. Then we get Exodus, Meshuggah, Scorpions, D-A-D, Pretty Maids, Kreator, Doro, Dark Tranquillity, Opeth, and the fantastic Night Flight Orchestra for free.

Stryper was on their way across the sea when God intervened and caused some malfunction to their plane and they had to cancel.
Because of that these guys got moved up to their spot. They are f***ing brilliant. ( Is that Henrik Zetterberg on the Thunderbird guitar?)

Another killer track.

@MK9 , how well known is this band in the US? Do they get any air play at all? Or is it just word of mouth fame?

The radio, at least locally here, is corporate owned and watered down beyond belief. I haven't listened to it in years. They just rotate songs that are all regurgitated crap everyone's heard 1000x or almost entirely mainstream bands. So you'll rarely hear new bands. I'm assuming most of the rest of the country is similar. I personally think the state of hard rock & metal in the states here is in shambles. Corporate radio / media promote pop, rap/hip hop and country. Most new rock is now largely ignored.

Crazy to see these Euro bands that are absolutely HUGE there where they play to arenas whatnot, they come here and play to half filled bars because they get no airplay or support here.

I mean, I just looked at our local station to see what their playlist has been like and a mass majority of those songs were the same ones in rotation 5+ years ago the last time I bothered to listen to it. It's ridiculous. It really started going downhill with the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Everything changed after that. The bill more or less did the opposite of what it was supposedly intended to do. I believe Rick Beato has a few videos where he explains what happened. Or if you want to just read about it: A Century of Radio: How the Telecom Act of 1996 Changed Radio

I bet you could maybe count 6-8 songs/bands on that list that are from 2015 or later. So, I don't know that 93X (KXXR) has ever once played Avatar, but unfortunately I highly doubt it.

For reference:

The other thing that sucks locally here, is the lack of venues. Most of the bars that used to host hard rock and metal bands have either closed or aren't making money off it. And the lack of mid level venues between bars and arenas. So, now we'd have to travel to Milwaukee or Chicago to go see shows for a lot of these bands. Tour dates get released and most times there isn't even a Minneapolis date on the tour anymore. It absolutely sucks.

Oh man, that's just depressing. Here in Sweden we have public service radio with dedicated metal shows. Real journalists that do interviews with the artists and discusses their albums. We get 3-4 songs with commentary from the bands, the critics point of view and the audience reactions before/after their shows.
Growing up, we had great shows such as "Rockbox" , "Metalljournalen" and "Rockdepartementet".
Many metal bands that now dominates the world stage listened to that growing up, and took notes.
When I was in the 20-40's we still had great (smaller) local venues that could host bands such as Motorhead, Accept and Thin Lizzy, but nowadays the live scene has dried out in this small town (80.000 or something)
We have a great live tradition since the 60's, we were called Sweden's Liverpool because of the many great bands originating from here. Some of those is well known across the world such as Roxette, with multiple #1 US billboard hits and Arch Enemy.

But now the kids are more into their phones and don't like to get out and meet people as much as we did.
Everything's going to shit.

@MK9 , this is from one of our local bars. It's my dear friend Tobias Nilsson and his band Blind Dog on their last gig ever. Oh man, do I miss those days. They did a really great stoner rock album, The Last Adventures of Captain Dog and were one of the great bands of that genre. Raw, up close and personal.
