The Vancouver Media Thread | Part VIII

Brough saying he can’t enjoy Canuck games with EP40 in them because he’s too focused on EP40’s feeling, will react post game…etc

Uhh… Does anyone watch games like that? Seems like a new level of obsessed
My biggest concern is never the scoresheet

It is always* . . . how a player will react post game

I'm lying of course

My biggest concern is how the media will react the next morning to how a player reacted post game

I know what you are thinking

Now your biggest concern is how I react to the next morning medias' reaction to how a player reacted post game

Which raises a whole new concern for me

I agree with Brough.
Pettersson (40) has been such a distraction this season (and honestly for the majority of his career) that I find it quite refreshing to watch games where he isn't playing.
I think that's what Brough was getting at.
Miller was kinda the same for me ever since he quit on the team the first time durinf Bruces short tenure here.

Find someone as devoted to you as some people here are to this Petey and Miller bullshit and you'll never walk a step alone.
I really don't get this pretending that it's nothing either. It was obviously so big a deal that it disrupted the room, our core besides Hughes had awful seasons, and it got Miller traded.

Nobody is overstating this.

But this difference has been known about for years and not a problem.

But it does distract from a possible player rebellion against a coach.

What could be so bad to make a competitive player like Miller need to get away from one player?
But a coach? Ya, easily. A difference between a coach and player that reaches such a point where the player doesn't want to play for the coach?

So many examples of "they don't have to like each other" when working with each other, but a problem with the boss is always different. And that would disrupt the coaches authority in the room. Which was starting to be questioned as "or something else, whatever it was".

Remember it was Miller that stood up to the NHL about scheduling, not the coach, not management, not the captain and not any other players. He wasn't afraid to stand up for himself and team mates. He got the NHL to change the sched.

This is revealing to me anyway,

“The whole me-and-Petey thing, it’s still blown out of proportion,” Miller said, per Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre. “I get what Jim was doing. I have a ton of respect for Jim, and I talked with Jim after that (story). I wasn’t mad; I understand everybody has a job to do. Clearly, if me and Petey were better than we were, obviously this might be different. But it’s also not as bad as everybody thought either. It’s just an easy thing for everybody to run with. There was just a lot of moving parts.”

Pettersson as a reason is better, easier than it being the coach or GM.

In the past and he isn't the reason for the team not being having success but it will be used as a reason for years.
No one player is a TEAM.

Miller spoke because Horvat was still in covid protocol and couldn't speak to the media.

Horvat tested positive and was in covid protcol from Jan 12 - 18th, Miller's statement was from home and on April 14th just before the entire team had 8 games re-scheduled and were to play 9 games in 14 days after just one practice.

I argued this to the near death of me when it happened because people tried to use it as a knock on Horvat and how he was a bad captain.

He was in covid protocol or just coming out of it and the rules said players in protocol couldn't speak to the media.

There was a quote from Myers or someone that said the team as a group decided Miller would speak in his place.

Horvat was in protocol April 3rd to 16 or 17th. He spoke the first day off of it.

I guess he got it twice then;

Bo Horvat is frustrated he was forced to miss five games because of COVID-19 protocol, the Vancouver Canucks forward said.

He last played in a 4-2 win at the Washington Capitals on January 16, and entered COVID protocol on January 18 when the team was in Nashville to play the Predators.

I think the second time there was when too many others had tested positive and the league re-did 8 games.
As I posted Miller did the interview from his home.
This was never a slight on Horvat, it was just pointing out Miller's psyche, that he wasn't worried about calling out the NHL.
If the rest of the team did go to him for that it just shows how he was a leader in the room or they thought he was the only one crazy enough to challenge the NHL.

Horvat did go into protocol twice.

And you called out the captain for not speaking up, when he literally couldn't do so. If he wasn't in protocol as the captain he would have been the one to speak up.

Horvat didn't have a problem speaking out on touchy subjects. Horvat was front and center when the players had a two day protest where games were postponed over racism and police brutality.

Bo Horvat does commercials for Big Vice. He DGAF.

We never should have traded him.

This franchise continues to miss on chemistry & team building.

It’s a pickle

Not sure why we're talking about Horvat in the media thread. Anyhow, I'm not in the room and I have no personal knowledge of whether Horvat is or isn't a good captain/leader. Without such knowledge, I would rank him as an average captain as there were reports of cliques and factions in the locker room during Horvat's reign.

With that said, Horvat was put into a tough position. He was sort of the first young guy to arrive on the scene and was a teammate of the Sedins. He was then a bit more established and didn't hang out with Quinn, Brock, and Petey. He wasn't American so he didn't hang out with Miller. Pearson was his buddy. So while Horvat was the captain, he was not the best player on the team and he wasn't best friends with other best players on the team.

Not really sure where to put this, but it's of interest.

In the sports landscape, I would imagine a PWHL expansion team for Vancouver, a new stadium for the Whitecaps, and a practice facility for the Canucks would be the top three wish list items.

Patrick Johnston is saying it's a Vancouver PWHL team

A source confirmed earlier this week that the Professional Women’s Hockey League would soon be announcing an expansion team in Vancouver, likely to play at the Pacific Coliseum.

PWHL teams are owned by the league itself, with Mark Walter, who also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, the league’s sole investor. There has been some talk that the PWHL might bring in some outside investors, but there is no word if that’s the case here.

The fact the team will not be based at Rogers Arena suggests that the Aquilinis, owners of the Canucks, will not be involved with the expansion team.

It’s expected that a PWHL expansion team for Seattle will also be announced in short order.

The PWHL currently has six teams: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Minnesota, Boston and New York.

Realistically, they shouldn’t play in rogers unless they can fill the lower bowl. But options are what? UBC? Langley event Center? Probably not Pacific Coliseum.

I would imagine Seattle would have to be announced for the PWHL at the same time. Having a lone team in Vancouver would be a pretty tough travel/expense lift.

I assume they'll play at the Colosseum. No main tenant there.

The Colisseum is fun to watch hockey at. Lots of history in that building, would be nice to see it put to good use.

A PWHL franchise in Vancouver would be awesome, too. I wonder how they'd deal with the geographical challenges of being the only western team while the other teams are all bunched together in the East.

Would be awesome to see Chloe Primerano get to suit up for her hometown.

Mon, Tor, Ott, NYR, Min, Bos.

I would agree that logistically and financially, it's harder for a new team to be that isolated from the rest. Often when that happens, teams traveling here would play 2 times to reduce travel expenses.

Why is the province showing up at a PWHL announcement? Even the city, for that matter. With all due respect, new teams and leagues come and go all the time. If the government is there, that usually would suggest a major infrastructure project.

I mentioned PWHL, a Whitecaps stadium, and a Canucks practice facility.

Wild theory - what if it was all three? PWHL franchise playing out of Pacific Colisseum, while a Whitecaps stadium and Canucks’ practice facility get built on the grounds nearby resulting in a mammoth sports and entertainment district?

The beat writers all seem to think this is indeed the PWHL. In which case I guess the government officials just want the photo op.

Great for PWHL fans, but my thoughts are this too:
Oh wonderful, more hockey.

BC used to be the center for non-hockey sport in Canada. The balance has shifted so far the other direction that now non-hockey spectator teams seem to struggle, and there is not even much (any?) BC content on the men's national soccer team, for example.
