I try to be optimistic about this team, and there are lots of things to be positive about this season, believe it or not.

But the CBJ's special teams are ridiculous. Awful. With all the firepower we have (Nash, RJ, Brass, Jake, Chimmer, Juice, etc), there's no reason we're not scoring on the power play. We are (or were, I haven't looked) one of the top teams at 5-on-5 and 4-on-4 scoring. Why can't we score when 5-on-4, 5-on-3, or 4-on-3? We win tonight, along with a few other games, with even a moderately better PP.

And what happened to the as high as 3rd best PK in the league from last year?

I called the postgame show and talked about it on there. One thing of the many that was brought up was that we need a right-handed shot on the left defensive side to help. Russell would be a good call-up except that he's a lefty.

Regardless, we need to fix things for the better or we're toast!

PP was easily the worst I can remember. 5 on 3 and we could barely move the puck. No hope whatsoever except that Noel will be fired.

I have to agree with this. It's time for Claude to be held accountable.

I really am tired of hearing excuses like "we need a right hand shot" or "we don't have a true PPQB". A group of guys who amongst league leaders in even strength should be able to score a man up.

We don't use all the ice; our man in front of the goalie doesn't SCREEN the goalie; we allow the other team to keep their shape; have have no cutters; we play from positions (which is why it's easy to pressure us) instead of moving the puck and forcing the PKers to react to us. So many things wrong it's laughable.

I've never been one to call out coaches, but this must stop. We're the laughing stock of the league right now with Claude "Mr. Inept" Noel. Please give the fans an early Christmas present and fire this guy.

I was really hoping to wake up this morning and read news on Puckrakers that Noel got an early Christmas present of some time off... permanently.

Not a huge OSU fan, but when their O-line sucked to high heaven early in the season, Tressel ceremoniously took control of the line away from offensive coordinator and O-line coach Jim Bollman. The head coach took personal responsibility for the play of the team's worst unit. It's time for Hitch to make a similar move, becasue this is seriously to date the biggest test of his coaching tenure in Columbus.

And the PP was better last year with Agnew in charge...

Yeah, but of the top six players in PP TOI last season, only two are still regulars (Klesla and Nash), one was just called up again (Russell) and the other three were traded or let go (Zherdev, Hainsey, Vyborny). It's even worse when we look at who Hitch went to the most when they were available (PP TOI/G): Wilson, Hainsey, Zherdev, Nash, Westcott, Tarnstrom.

Seems to me another consequence of having no PP, other than the obvious failure to score, is that it enables other teams to play a more aggressive, looser style against us, since they can rest assured that our PP is absolutely no threat whatsoever. It doesn't matter what they do. They can abuse our guys mercilessly, and short of doing something that earns a suspension, there is zero price to pay. Think of the possibilities that open up when you know you don't have to worry about the opposing team's PP. Ever.

I'm ready to fire Noel. Out of the cannon. But don't forget, Mr. Hitch selected him, then gave him the PP assignment. In my business, as a manager and a leader, I take responsibility for my own actions, and the buck stops with me. Can Hitch say that? I mean is he even capable of saying that?

In fairness, we really dont have the proper tools for him to craft a workable unit . Working with left handed threads on a right handed bolt is next to impossible...:deadhorse:
But come on ... even a blind squirrell finds a nut once in a while

Hi, I'm your new Special teams coach

pipe dream

PP is hard work & passion... two of Kevin's trademarks. My guess is we will wait to long and Burke will move into Toronto as GM tap Dino as a special teams coach there and will once again look like a brain trust... and Mingo will have been the 1st person to have suggested it.

Um, no.

and I'm pretty sure there were people who suggested this before me in the Fire Hitchcock thread. But it's good to have Mingo in our little lynch mob! ;)

Noel was Hitch's hiring.

Seriously? I could've sworn he was around before he was here. Well, all the worse then, I suppose.

Seems like we still have a lot of the same guys. Do we still have the same "strength and conditioning" team we had under MacLean? I know we DID, but haven't kept up with that aspect lately ;)

OK, let's look at this from a logical point of view.

Fact: the CBJ PP is an epic fail. No matter the thoughts and opinions of everyone, from we the fans to the players to the coaches to Howson, it is a proven, statistical failure.

Logic would dictate that if you keep doing something the same way and it fails time after time after time, the only way to generate a different outcome is to change how you are doing it.

If this team is not changing how it does the PP, I am forced to conclude that either A) the coaches do not know that what they are doing is not working, which is highly unlikely, or B) they refuse to acknowledge that what they are doing is not working.

I fear that it is B), which means that it is not so much an issue of Noel's ineptitude (and yes, I do agree that he is inept) as much as it is Hitch refusing to change a crucial piece of his system.

I just find it very hard to believe that there is nothing about this situation that can be changed in order to fix it, other than shuffling the units non-stop.

Does this make sense? Or am I oversimplifying the situation?

I think you got it right. Interesting to see now, if Russell gets a shot with the PP, and by that I don't just mean one game.

By the way, as I again fell asleep during the game against PHX, was Voracek playing on the point or is he still paying the price of one big mistake?
