Anyone got any insider tips for great places to visit in Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kanazawa and Nara? We have a non-Tokyo fortnight in Japan this September and will be rocking the JR Pass for all its worth. We also have a hire car for the three days we'll be spending up in the mountains - at least they drive on the right side of the road in Japan ;-)

Thanks in advance.

The right side of the road for you,but not for me. Just something I always have to get refreshed with.
What you folks in to? that would help as to likes etc. Also if someone can speak Japanese would be benefit otherwise stick to more touristy places as the rural s is hard to find any English speaking.
The food is excellent anywhere you go,but make sure you know what you're eating first.Safety is not a concern and transportation is great.

We're aiming to cram in as many temples, gardens, shrines, torii gates and general non-21st century Japan as possible.....apart from the days we're on the bullet trains of course. We have a couple of nights in Ryokans in the villages on the old Post Road in the mountains already sorted, but there are just so many great-looking options in Kyoto especially that we just won't have time to see everything.

Our Japanese will be limited to thank you, thank you very much, can we have the bill please, what platform is the train to "xxxxx" and do you speak a little bit of English?

Cool! so not going for the subarushi side then,ok. No offense intended, but all the Japanese I know prefer western bedding to tatamis, myself included. Kyoto is the most spectacular vintage city to visit and if you got super deep pockets, some once in a a lifetime dining.

So my GF and I are looking to leave in mid August for 2 or 3 weeks.

Got about 3k to spend, dont have to spend all of it and my GF has it too.

I live for the ocean, surfing and chilling around. I dont mind camping, or wtv.

I do care about my safety a lot though, and I'm scared how the hood rat in me would react if something happened, I also have a natural disaster paranoia and dont like cities or crowded area much.

Where do I go?

look for San Clemente in California ( it's not LA, it has a chilling vibe that feels like Santa Cruz)

I will try to send you a picture from the time I went surfing there. Also, not much crime in San Clemente, the waves are amazing and it's a chill/surfing vibe city.

We rent a small house on the hill up the ocean. The city is build like San Francisco's streets, it's really amazing to see the ocean in the morning

and you can rent an Airbnb pretty easily there.

You never mentioned if you're bound to one area or free to go anywhere. If you're in Canada and want to stay there, Tofino.(Long Beach) It's awesome and has all the stuff you mentioned, and more.

Absolutely not bound to anywhere.

BC is a later project, actually anywhere in Canada is. Were going to go by car and well need more time than 2 3 weeks for that.

Yes, I agree about Cali, but my GF would rather not go back a second time, just for variety sake.

If were going back somewhere its straight to Maui/Moloka'i/Big Island or Kauai.

Chile was definitely on my radar. Did you go? Anybody can tell me more?
