The Team That Played The Best Against FLA This Spring Was...

Toronto was saved from indignity by blowing game 3. Game 6 goes a different way with Panthers in do or die heart of a champion mode + Leafs history of choking in elimination games. Panthers come back from 3-0 against the team most likely to blow one in the league.

Shake your head

EDM was easily the best team they played. It didn't look like it but 97/29 were constantly inches from grade A chances. Entire series FLA were balancing on a knife edge. A 1/4 step slower from any the the defense would change everything.

Kudos to the Cats

RNH 97 perry ONE SHIFT. Even loading up 29 97 to 16 minutes of ice time together wasn't enough for them to produce because the Panthers simply didn't give them the space.

But yeah it's EDMs fault for being bad and TOR was the real SCF..absolute rubbish.

A forgotten tidbit in NHL history: the 1982 Penguins were the 2nd best team in the NHL.
Huh.

The context, for those who don't want to go look it up: first round, 82 playoffs. Best-of-five, Islanders (118 pts) stomped the Penguins (75 pts) in the first two games (combined score 15-3), but Pittsburgh took games 3 & 4 to set up a decisive game 5. Penguins actually led the Isles 3-1 with 6 minutes to go but the Isles scored twice to tie, and then won in OT. Isles did not face elimination again in the 82 playoffs, even sweeping both the conference final (vs 82-pts Quebec) and Cup final (vs 77-pts Vancouver).

The Penguins did not appear in the playoffs again until 1988.

Even if the teams listed could have beaten FL... they still had to make it through the rest of the grueling playoffs. I don't think any of them would have won the cup.

Every team we played against in the playoffs, on paper, had a strong case for defeating us.

But if you think being "close" to beating us means you don't have to change much to improve, then you might as well tank. Every team is going to try to be better next year. If you're satisfied with being close, then be prepared to never win.

The Leafs took Florida to seven games, since they had the most success against the now Stanley Cup champion I would consider them to be the second best team in the league. Everyone knows that Toronto would have smoked Edmonton in the Stanley Cup final if they had made it and then afterwards McDavid would be begging for a trade to the Leafs

We know it wasn’t Toronto as they had a 2 - 0 lead in games won and a 3-1 lead in game 3. But blew it like Ralph Kramden blew the name of the composer for “Suwannee River”.

I vote Edmonton

Yeah, there is a thread with a poll on this already.

Can we just petition the Panthers to let them keep the Cup for a day, as a consolidation prize?

They got 2 guys from Toronto on the Panthers, plus Bennett is from Ontario. The Leafs will be really close to the cup for a good chunk of the summer. No need to lend it out, it will be there.

At least before the series Lightning, Leafs and Oilers felt equally challenging. And even afterwards it is difficult to say which one would prefer to face the most or the least. Anyhow - the best team won - no doubt about it at all.

After watching the playoffs this year, the Leafs were a LOT more fun to watch than the Oilers. I feel like the Leafs have a missing piece to add before they can make a real shot to go all the way. They ARE making progress and if that's all you can bring home, that's still quite a lot.
