Post-Game Talk: The summer of our discontent

Something lost in all this was…Walman was awful in the finals.
You mean playing with a different partner every night and not knowing if was playing left or right side? Thats gonna happen. The rest of the playoffs he was excellent.Hell game one he was one of our best players. Everybody sucked for two straight games and it makes it look worse than it was.

Fair, but he still played awfully. That said most guys did.

That said I think it’s obvious d wise that Klingberg won’t be back which rounds out our 7 d. Makes me wonder if we actually try and get a top 4 rhd. Knoblauch doesn’t seem to enjoy or like playing lefties on the right.

Anybody have any idea what the penalty for this is going to be when the league decides we’re guilty.

It will be insanely heavy as it will set the price for cap circumvention. It’s why there is no set penalty for it because Bettman said if you set a penalty teams will just pay the fine or draft picks whatever it is to circumvent the cap.

I image it will be the loss of multiple first round draft picks.

They will have to relinquish Leon Draisaitl, while still carrying his cap, in the expansion draft for H'Atlanta 3.0
It is curious to me that after a decade or more of teams doing this and in many cases, more blatantly than what the Oilers did with Kane, that the league chooses not only now to go after somebody but that it’s the Oilers in the summer that Connor McDavid is eligible to sign an extension. Will the punishment be enough to make the Oilers future unappealing enough to discourage him from resigning here?

I think it's more of a coincidence that it happens to be that same summer. So for the bolded, I'm thinking no. Seravalli is right, 100% McDavid will re-sign.

But I do think the punishment could be some nonsense like a 2nd round pick or something.

I mean, if you can't understand the fundamental difference in how a team plays when they need to win a game and how they play when they were spotted a two goal lead and just need to hold onto it then there is no point in me engaging in this.

Funny how the three of you in here that think Skinner is the reason for world hunger all like to talk down to everyone else who challenges your opinion or points out that we didn't score/pressure at all.

Best of luck mate.

You do know that Canadian players or big market players get more sponsorship deals that more than cover differences in taxes, that and we are a much lower cost of living then Florida…. Their property taxes are insane too.

Not every player is getting those deals or sponsorships.

Just want to say a few things about this franchise.

Getting to the Stanley Cup finals two years in a row is a massive success. I am very proud of everyone involved. I absolutely do see so much that is bad/wrong, but the fact is two finals in two years is amazing. I imagine we have more Stanley cup wins over the last 5 years than almost any team outside of Florida. I am extremely proud of the players especially.

How did we lose... Florida is a better team. Losing Hyman was bigger than even I feared it would be. With him we would have been closer to Florida's level but it is what it is. Taxes, cap circumvention, and just a damn good team.

Coaching was good. There is a lot of various complaints and inuendo that McDavid is complaining but we don't even make it to that final without good to great coaching.

Having said that, coaching/Mcdavid lost this series in game 2 IMO. In game 7 of last years finals McDavid looked cooked, gassed, out of fuel. He just could not find his highest gear. Ditto this year but even more so. Playing McDavid 35 minutes in a double OT game is stupid. Beyond stupid. I dont care if McDavid was wanting to play every minute. OT is all about short shifts and using your whole line-up. He played 5 minutes more than any Florida forward. 5!. Overall the whole series was far too focused on Mcdavid. Which made no sense since the team had been playing great spreading minutes around better up to the last series.

There are a ton of mistakes Oilers management has made over the years and while I applaud their success it also needs to be said that the success in many ways has been in spite of their efforts rather than because. The Nurse contract, the offer sheets, bad gambles on Skinner (forward), Frederick, and Arvidsson... etc.

A quick note on our goaltending. For the amount we pay for our goaltending Skinner and Pichard were amazing as well. I do not think we lost this series because of goaltending. In a cap world you make choices and spending more on goaltending means we have even less forward/defense depth. You can't have it both ways. Goaltending is also voodoo with even big paid stars having brutal years or being washed out the league. I think spending less on goaltending in a cap world is a relatively solid gamble. I dont feel like Bob played "that" much better than either of our goalies this year.

It would be great if we could get some better management. I think the Bowman hire is reprehensible. But with the success they have had it is unlikely to happen.

In short I really hope the Oilers continue to have success and hopefully they take the last step to win the cup in the next few years. I think a general mistake was changing so much from the previous year. I hope this next year they lock down McDavid and Bouchard then look to get younger/faster/meaner.

Two years of Stanley Cup final losses is waaaaaaaaaay better than any kind of rebuild/retool/decade of darkness. As Oilers fans we are still very lucky and I think we need to appreciate what we have. The cup is the hardest trophy in sports to win for a reason.

Pretty disappointed w/ McD to be honest. The whole we kept trying the same thing over and over thing.

Look in the mirror dude. Saw alot of him trying to take on 3 players and a shit ton of net flybys.

Hey McD, wanna try something different?....try crashing a net ffs. He was literally in the corner on 3 prime shots yesterday
I like looking at moneypucks shot location chart after a game. Every game we won in the playoffs the majority of our shots were around the net. Every game we lost the area around the net looked like a ghost town. I know Florida has big, strong D but you still have to make the effort and pay the price if you want to win. The team played game 5 and 6 like it was just some regular season game in November.
