Post-Game Talk: The summer of our discontent

Skinner got hot. He can do that if our D plays well and lets him get some confidence. The moment the D start wobbling though, he collapses like no goalie I've ever seen before or since. Skinner's good performances are a trap: we keep thinking he's finally turned the corner, and then he has another catastrophic collapse when we need it least. He didn't totally implode last night, his only real major collapse was Game 3, which I expected due to him playing so much hockey in such a short amount of time. But he was the second-best goalie in pretty much every single game this series, and aside from game one, it wasn't even a discussion.

Vegas also lost some clutch playoff vets in Stephenson and Marchy, and we figured out Adin Hill.
Vegas shots were awful. Rarely labeled, mostly shooting wide on great chances or passing off. Other than that pad and logo stuffers. Bozo the clown could look good with the Vegas and Dallas markmanship. Soon as Skinner was going to face some guys that pick spots, can change angles, and make plays he was doomed. he doesn't even do well against the Kings.

LIke I say its unfortunate in a way that Dallas in two different rounds have kind of elevated Skinner rep when really its about his best two rounds ever, and against the same club that die whenever their scoring goes completely Dry.

LIke I said in Skinner thread after Dallas series I want further evidence before changing any view on Skinner.

The saddest part of this is that it's so easy to see why guys would want to play in Florida, or Tampa. There is literally zero pressure. You get accolades for a week or 2 then get to enjoy anonymity. Your name gets to go on the cup, so you'll get respect from real hockey fans and once a rebuild is needed, no one will expect anything from you. It's like a win-win-win situation.
Barkov could walk down Collins Ave right now, wearing a Panthers jersey and holding a mini Stanley Cup and no one will recognize him.

If Edmonton won a player like Janmark couldn’t even wait in line for a donair without a 100 fans pestering him.

We made this team worse in the offseason, and it was hard to tell against all the mid teams we played — but against the Panthers it’s obvious. We’re worse than last year, and we’ll be worse again next year.
Gee imagine losing 70 and 50, and 45 pt wingers was a bad idea. It didn't take either of us until this round to see that. We were seeing it in July and August.

It's been almost a day and that loss still burns. Game 7 last year was disappointing but you felt a lot of comfort because the boys fought to the bitter end and they were so close.

This year the team just... died. They went out quietly with a pathetic whimper, completely accepting of their defeat. At no point were the Panthers ever in danger of losing this series, which is wild because the team was closer to the Cup down 3-0 in the series than they were tied 2-2.

I think for the team once a day they should watch game 5 with their eyes forced open. That game will be their legacy.

Pray they don't end up facing their worst possible matchup (made much worse by 'weird' officiating).

IMO they would have easily beaten any of the other final 4 Eastern Conference teams

Aside from that, they need more grit on the wings (Kane is washed, and Frederic was the right idea but played injured)

Needed some coaching adjustments from special teams to 5v5 systems

Most importantly, need a real starting goalie. Maybe that actually gets fixed this offseason
Ya that’s clearly the case, not being able to beat Florida. Cap considerations in mind, they need to try and trade for a goalie like Binnington or Saros and in my opinion upgrade the defense by signing a guy like Fabbro for example after moving some defensive salary out the door if possible? They also need to sign a guy or two with cup winning experience like Patrick Kane for example? And for the love of God buyout or trade Evander Kane !!! They may also have to move some passengers from this team one way or the other too!

Am I losing my mind? Which 70 pt player did we lose?
67pt trending Dylan Holloway. He also spent fair amount of season flirting near PPG. Hell of a loss.

Oh but Arvid. Oh but J Skinner.

The only speed forwardss that gave the Panthers trouble last postseason were Holloway, Foegele, McLeod, WE promptly get rid of all of them and a bluechip young D as well.

And the Oilers took it lol. They can say and do whatever they want. We lost b2b finals to them, I personally just don't watch that stuff..

I didnt watch it either, it was given to me by my X feed when I was scrolling this morning. They are the champs they can say and do what they want as you say. They could choose to do it with some class or they could choose to do it the way they are doing it. Their choice.

And yet some people on here were always telling us we have a speedy team. ;) Compared to the Panthers, we looked like we were skating in cement.

It seems small, but we missed our departures a ton. Holloway match seemed like a no-brainer even at the time. And for all their faults, the Foegele/McLeod duo stepped into the top 6 better than this year's crop and still gave you effective minutes in 3rd line roles and a PK boost. The replacements ended up showing their ineffectiveness in the end and I maintain we gave Florida more of a challenge last year.

Especially after getting hammered for a few games. It just got worse. Yeah I never thought this seasons version of the Oilers was fast. Older and slower.

The whole reason waiver Kapanen was even in lineup is the team so desperate for a little speed and pace.

Panthers had fresher legs indeed.

Haha. The Glory years oilers were drinking out of the cup in peeler bars and with some other things happening I can't mention here. They were also leaving the cup behind on highway trips and ran over it once denting it.

yeah really anything goes.

Or stop cheating for offense and play as a 5-man unit when playing against a forechecking team like Fla.
Absolutely agree. The Oil lost in the margins again with poor puck decisions at bad times and poor penalties. Special teams took a big step back notably inept level PK. Goaltending too was substandard. There's nuance to the issues that cost them against an apex Cup champion not one simple thing and repeating issues stemming back coaches.

That said, steady, reliable above average goaltending can better mask those issues which have become lesser until Florida 2.0.

Need a competent GM that finds veterans at steal contracts. Zito is on another level it’s crazy.
Haha, is he? Have him GM Edmonton and see how many players he can get to come. Comparing the cities, weather and tax benefits we are not on a level playing field. Throw in the fact our goalie's family is getting death threats from the trailer park trash fans where do you think players will want to go?
