Post-Game Talk: The summer of our discontent

Stu Skinner post game as per usual taking no fault and blaming team.

What an absolute joke of postgame comments. He's absolving himself once again and blaming the team. What an absolute clown. He claims he was consistent, and on his game, in his bubble, and that the team was inconsistent. Mark Messier would've punched this guy in the face by now.

"WE gotta learn from this, letting this happen two years in a row is devastating." yeah, having you in net and having to listen to your idiotic deferral all responsibility is devastating. f*** off Skinner!

He’s saying that Florida was more consistent as a team than the Oilers were. He’s not wrong.
He just forgot to mention his own performance regarding consistency. Skinner, Bouchard, Ekholm, Nurse and Kane were the ones to blame in the finals

For me the first move needs to be in net! All other moves would be rearranging seats on the titanic.

Players have zero faith in our goalies.

We only have 6 players who played in the signed after next year and that could make things interesting.

Have guys on the 3rd/4th line have full no movement/trades clauses is back to being annoying

Incorrect. Panthers got 2012 Quick goaltending two years in a row and are back to back champs. If the Oilers got that same level goaltending, we might be having a different conversation. It’s not 100% on goaltending obviously, but they deserve some of the blame as well. Don’t fool yourself.
On another note: the Panthers also paid $10M (adjusted to the salary cap probably more like $12M today) in order to get this 2012 Quick goaltending. Oilers simply don't have this money, they threw it at Nurse and other underperformer and they will have even less money in the future.

This team desperately needs 2-3 players on ELCs showing up next year if they want to have the chance to build a contending team. Also need to find some cheap and good FAs: Nate Schmidt, Kulikov and Mikkola combined for $3.5M or so..

I know he is supposed to be expensive, but does he not have great rapport with McDavid? He can move the puck up the neutral zone, no problem. And of course, his shot. The Oilers need elbow grease (clean), and goaltending.
Sorry I may misunderstand you - are you saying he’s too valuable to trade or that no one would want him ? I assumed the latter and am sure there would be many takers for him on the market. 🙂

I generally agree with your take but there needs to be significant changes. Specifically with goaltending. We will not win with this duo. We need a goalie that can make a big save when needed doesn’t need to be a Vézina caliber goalie but one that can turn the tide for us. Also we need more depth up front that can generate offense. Kane and Nuge and others have shown they are not capable of creating without McDrai. Goals for offseason needs to be a bonfire no.1 goalie and a puck carrying, offense driving forward (Marner, Ehlers, whoever via trade) we need offense drivers outside of Connor and Leon.

Edit: this is easier said than done with our shitty contracts and cap situation but that’s what Bowman was brought in for supposedly…

I mean, Nuge and Kane were definitely performing and playing their respective styles well, even if they weren't stat stuffers. Nuge was hurt the back half of the playoffs as well, plus we lost our Marchand/Bennett in Hyman when it mattered most.

At the end of the day, we aren't winning scoring 2 goals to 10 over the final two games of the series. Goaltending is a part, but we can't exactly say we lost due to goaltending when we couldn't score more than a goal a game or even put sustained pressure on them.

I agree we'll make some changes. Maybe a trade for an average goaltender and have Pickard backup. Savoie hopefully makes the team on his ELC. Maybe sign or trade for another guy or two on top of resigning Fred, McD, Bouch. Otherwise, I really like our core and team still. Defense is the best its been in literal decades. Even Nurse looked like he was playing closer to his contract value than before. Forwards are deep too.

We just met a better team that wanted it more, and had some health luck on their side relative to us. Nothing to be ashamed of.

The former. I haven't been up to their cap space situation, but I feel like Bouchard is an integral part of the Oilers team. Speaking as an outsider, of course. McDavid, Draisaitl, Bouchard, clean elbow grease, and, obviously, goaltending.

Wheres he wrong is he's the worst example of "consistency" and "needing to get better" Something that never really registers with him. he can f*** off. Hope to never have to see him in the Oilers cage again.

He's so arrogant and smug about it. Everybody let him down. Thats his pretention.

He's saying this in the postgame whereby he caused the first GA with a horrible puck play. Then getting an assist on goal 3. Skinners hands in 2/3 first goals in the game. Of course "not my fault" Skinner.

He's a goalie and a troll.

Nothing he said is wrong, nor did he once deflect blame or fault. If anything, his comments show that he has a level of awareness that the team itself wasn't good enough, including himself.

I get you're angry and emotional, but blamming us losing the finals on Skinner when we scored 2 goals across 2 games shows pretty little awareness to the situation. Nevermind writing your own context and narratives to his pretty cliche cup-losing-team quotes to paint him as "a troll" is just showing a lack of awareness to the series as a whole.

Would love to see the actual quotes of him "deflecting blame" and "absolving himself" like you keep trying to paint.

We played from behind and were thoroughly outplayed almost every single game this playoffs in terms of scoring and goaltending in the first 20-30mins. If we would've won the cup with how we played these playoffs as a whole, it would've been a miracle as we only showed up for 40mins MAX at a time.

Still been a fun ride regardless. Think you just need to take a couple laps to calm down and realize it

Sounds like a real shitty one way contract. Dictates all benefit and entitlement rendered for the org, dubious benefits for the fan.

Give us your guaranteed money for 6yrs, we'll raise the cost of regular season and playoffs seemingly every year and you can't opt out in term?

holy crap. Didn't know it was that bad. Pro sports can get f***ed.

The contract stipulates the increases year over year as well but I did get significant benefits for signing up for 6 years.

Either way I do understand the contract as it’s for the Loge which is their highest demand ticket and the seats are awesome so they are very easy to sell even at the inflated prices.

What I didn’t like was they added a year as they used a force majuer clause for the Covid year. This was supposed to be my last year.

That said it’s not the Oilers I’m pissed off at - it’s the league. Seeing every single game “managed” for the sake of parity, well I can watch WWE if I want to watch a rigged event. I honestly do not know what is a penalty anymore and this benefits a team like Florida come crunch time.

“Not my fault”

I think guys like Saros, Gibson or (wishful) Sorokin will look at Edmonton as a place where they can win the big one.
Bowman needs to look at fixing real issues before wasting cap space on guys like Frederic.
Watch Bowman go out and get one of those guys and Knob plays him 70+ games so he has nothing left in the playoffs Helle style.

That while playing Connor on the PK all season. Worked out great in the playoffs after all.

Oh my God, can we not start this. At least not already.

This is such a strawman. The fact that our goalies are letting in muffins on the first handful of shots every single game has a direct impact on the offense.

We didn't lose last night because the offense failed to show up. We lost because Stu 'working on my game' Skinner whiffed on the second shot of the game, whiffed on another one in the last minute of play, and then gave up another absolute freebie later on.

All Florida had to do after the first was hold on to a two goal lead, in a game where they knew they were never going to get called for anything, and they win the Cup. Of course they shut it down after that.

Me after reading your post.

So Bouchard is tradable, but Nurse is not? Nurse kept his elbows in. I guess that counts for something.

I’d love to trade Nurse as he’s one of the most overpaid players in the NHL with a buyout proof contract and has total control over his destiny for the next 2 years and only a 10 team NTC for the next 3 years after that.

No idea what you mean by elbows in but his play and points and control vs contract make him untradeable yes.

Bouchard is easily tradeable to a team that wants a dynamic offensive D man with zero panic threshold and top fancies. We can’t afford both with a pending McDavid contract renewal and Draisaitl’s new deal kicking in next season.

Someone on twitter wrote that the players upfront seemed to have zero faith in their goalies, hence always trying to find the “perfect shot”

They know they shoot the puck, if it’s not a goal, it’s guaranteed possession lost and have to hustle back because of our tandem. So they are playing ultra conservative to start games.

It’s a bit of a stretch but I could see that as part of the reason why the team is always apprehensive

Maybe I'm running around in circles, but do you really think McDavid, Draisaitl, and Bouchard are unsignable, altogether, given the expanding cap?
