If the team is #8-#9 at the trade deadline will they keep all the UFA's and go for it or trade them all and make the reporters and fefans mad

Keep em. Management has been preaching the mix, if the players deliver the mix and they still sell, imagine how the room would feel. I think even the coaching staff would be pissed.

If they are in a position, they 100% .keeping the UFA instead of going after bottom round picks.

Dvorak isn't worth anything right now.
Armia, not going to fetch much more than a 3rd or a 4th
Evans, seems like they are about to keep him


Savard is the only one left with value but he has a strong value for the Habs too.
unless they managed to get another veteran, I doubt they will move him....in fact an extension might not be out of the question either.

Evans' contract
Dobes' start and long term plans for him.

"We are extremely happy where we are at and will stay the course in our rebuild we aren't looking for short term solutions" etc etc etc.

Honestly sometime it's like people have not been paying attention to how KH is managing this team. Any extension to a player not named Evans would be very very surprising and very disappointing. Savard is going to be 35 and Armia 32. It's the same old "everyone can play until 40" syndrome that so many fans have been afflicted with for a while now. It's not real.

Most player's career ends before 35. Dustin Penner was a force when he was 26 and he retired at 30. Beleskey retired at 30. Petrov NHL career ended at 31. Weise retired at 31. Mathieu Perreault retired at 33 and it was one season too many. Brunet retired at 33 and it was also one season too many. Redden retired at 35. Mike Richard retired at 30. The list goes on and on and on.

I can't think of a single reason why Montreal would want to extend Savard, Armia and Dvorak. Beck will have one season of AHL exp. Engstrom will have one season of AHL exp. Kapanen will have one season of SHL exp. Roy two seasons of AHL exp. Mailloux two seasons of AHL exp.

If this season proved one thing (to KH and others) is if a kid ain't ready it's a problem that can be solved without too much effort. It's better to keep room and if it's not working you adress the situation with a trade than sign a bad 3 years contract to a 30 years old vet and then be stuck with a bad contract. I'll be shocked if KH signs any of those 3 guys.

The median retirement age in the NHL is 31 (forwards) and 32 (dmen).

Well presumably any extensions to those 3 would be both cheap and short, so it's unlikely you'd be in a situation where you are stuck with a bad contract even if their play falls off significantly.

And yeah you can address the problem with a trade in season, but at the same time is letting the problem fester for 2 months while you wait to see if anyone can step up and/or find the right fit trade wise a good idea? If we just miss out of the playoffs this year, a lot of blame (Fair or not) would be placed on Hughes not having the supporting veteran D help the team needed right from the get go.

I have no doubt Hughes will continue to ensure that there is opportunity for young guys to make the team but that doesn't preclude keeping valuable vets around either. So we aren't signing all 3 + Evans, but we also probably aren't going to let everyone walk, sign no UFAs and let prospects fill all the spots either.
 
Can you guys feel it? Something in the air ...a little buzz around town.....the city is healing...
..something special is brewing......
 
The next Most crucial step in the rebuild is :

-Turning Matheson's 4.875M + Savard's 3.5M into a real bonafide top RD next to Hutson.

-Getting Reinbacher next to Xhekaj when Savard is gone.
-Adding Demidov to Top6.
-Seeing if Newhook can be a great 3rd liner, or replace.
-Slot Beck in for Dvorak when he is gone.

-Profit

Eventually
We get Tuch and Xhekaj in the bottom 6 as well to replace Gallagher and whoever as well
 
Remember when we used to roll out David Desharnais with Max and Subban in 3 on 3 OT?

Good times.

I'd argue that Caufield's having a better year. Similar points but tons of goals. I sincerely hope he breaks 50. It's been way, way too long.
