Something that we have to look at with him is his training last Summer.

Remember when he said in September that he wanted to loose some weight in the Summer and he was at 217 pounds...

Remember the summer of Kk after his first season...he cameback and he was awfull...always on his ass...apparently all he did that Summer was playing Tennis...

Slaf said that he tried someting New last Summer but never gave the details but it d'id't helped him at all.

As a fan , or journalist etc we don't really know exactly about their training and it is so important cause for Habs players ( when we don't make the playoffs) it is 5 months...and it is huge at that age..

Slaf is not as strong on his legs than the last 50 games.of last season.

I am tellijg you..his last Summer's training has something to do with it
It could be any number of reasons, but he has shown incredible resiliency since his draft.. big guys take much longer to develop, like defenders. Unless they are franchise type(s) like matthews, mcdavid, etc...

He’s been a lot slower than last season.

2023-24: top speed - 22.76 mph, speed bursts over 20 mph - 85 (1.04 per game)

This season: top speed - 22.04 mph, speed bursts over 20 mph - 14 (0.4 per game, on pace for 33)

He also had a lot more high danger and mid-range chances last season:

2023-24: high danger chances - 70 (.85 per game, 13 goals) mid-range - 53 (.65 per game, 5 goals)

This season: high danger chances - 18 (.51 per game, 2 goals) mid-range - 11 (.31 per game, 1 goal)
Where do you get this info? Interesting.

Interesting numbers, he doesn’t shoot enough so that explains the low numbers.

For speed I wonder if it's a matter of his skating getting worse, better coverage (if people are closing in, harder to reach full speed) or just general health or his training.

I don’t know, but it’s very evident that he isn’t moving his feet this year compared to last year. He needs to get back to that.

It does make you wonder if there is something ailing him.

I think there’s positives and negatives, and the net is some concern from me.

I’d like to see more intensity. A more proactive approach to contact. He relies on his size to absorb contact more often than he uses it to initiate.

He will never live up to his draft status or contract if he can’t do that.

This thread continues to serve as the example that certain posters prefer the illusion of being right and will pounce after every shift or game 'We should've drafted Wright, I mean Cooley, I mean Jiricek, I mean Nemec, no wait I mean Wright again because he was scoring for a few games, now Cooley again."

I think we should be past this. What we wanted is irrelevant now. Let s focus on Slaf Performance.

However if we do, we are allowed to say that right now he plays poorly and is far from deserving the massive contract he just signed.

I was in the 10% Slaf hope-draft-hims; it’s getting easier to spot what he’ll be as an nhler… A big guy who’s engaged and has good skills. Also easy to see what he’s not, which is a tough guy or a high-iq player. I think he was the right choice and has the ceiling he has.

Until the more recent games he started every action from an upright position instead of a good squat. Looked horrible to me and broke hockey 101. Looks better to me a bit in that regard recently.

Maybe it's nagging him
Looked like 1st-year “dear-in the headlights” Slaf his bad shifts. Maybe a groin thing or something but he even admitted himself he needs to be in motion. Hockey school taught me if you’re not already low and heavy that’s the first thing you have to do before any motion (whether shooting, hitting, skating anything) and the nhl does not allow that half second. It probably caps max speed too, nothing to build up from. It’s partly why he’s on his ass after hits so often too I figure.

Preface this by saying I hope I'm wrong, and I know he's still very young...
I just don't see anything more than maybe a 20-25 goal, 60 point forward - who hopefully uses his size. That's a fine 2nd liner, but I don't see Rantanen or anyone like that.
In another draft year, he probably goes 8-10th.

Thankfully we drafted Demidov.

It's not that he doesn't have any skill but he still doesn't appear to really understand how to play hockey, which is a problem for a guy who has been a professional for years now.

You can ignore his stats in Liiga, but a lot of the red flags he had in Finland haven't improved at all, you at some point have to wonder if he just doesn't have any feel for hockey.

I think he has a few ppg seasons ahead of him. He's mega-young in a big body.
