The Silver Plan: A Draft Lottery Alternative

I think your biggest mistake was assuming from the start that it was okay for you to gate-keep other people's fandom. I genuinely don't understand why you concern yourself with the way other fans decide to support their team.
I think the issue is that even though I'm an Avs and Habs fan, I genuinely look to watch lots of games not involving either team, especially if the game is important in some way to one or both the teams involved. So the genesis of my idea is just the selfish fact that I'd like to have more reasons to watch games, especially teams that have no shot at the playoffs. But I also remember being an Avs fan in the dark days when the team sucked, and wishing I had some reason to watch late season games, especially when there weren't even any exciting young prospects to watch for development. Or being a Habs fans in recent years when they faded down the stretch, and deciding I had better things to do than watch a team I love, hoping they lose for a better draft position.
I don't like your plan because even if it would fix the "problem" you've identified, I just don't see why it's a problem to be concerned with in the first place. Obviously our opinions differ, but that doesn't mean I'm too lazy to read a lengthy post or have reading comprehension issues.

Anyways, I do actually agree with you about removing the random nature of draft positions, but the (by far) simpler solution is to do away with the lottery altogether. Like others have suggested in this thread, I'd much prefer to see rules that prevent teams from getting multiple top 3 picks in a short period of time rather than tinkering with the odds or awarding silver points. My proposal would be to scrap the lottery and then :

- if a team drafts 1OA, they can't draft in the top 3 for the next three drafts
- if a team drafts 2OA, they can't draft in the top 3 for the next two drafts
- if a team drafts 3OA, they can't draft in the top 3 for the next draft

If one of these teams finishes in the bottom 3 again during this period, they drop to 4OA. If more than one finishes in the bottom 3 again, they drop outside the top 3 and then their draft positions are based on their records. The top 3 picks would end up going to teams that haven't had a recent top 3 pick. These conditions would only apply to the first round of the draft.
Hey, if my idea or the Gold Plan don't get adopted, I'm much rather have your plan here than the current one, so we agree on some fundamental level. We at least agree that the lottery sucks.

Wait, the entire point of this thread is that you're disappointed that fans of other teams aren't sufficiently enthusiastic about games once their favourite team has no chance of making the playoffs?

WTH?

There are two issues.

1) Elite/Generational players disproportionately matter for winning.

2) a couple teams are disproportionately bad in the NHL.

Any lottery system that doesn't give the worst team a top 3 pick is going to fail.

That said, I would like the order of the entire draft to be determined by lottery, with limits on how much teams can move up or down.

This has nothing to do with hockey or fairness and everything to do with my degenerate gambling problem.

had a longer post but deleted. If a team is out of the playoffs and is sitting on UFAS who will not be resigning with the team, the team gets penalized for getting assets back for assets they are going to lose for nothing, players who are about to be UFA are then blocked from going to a playoff teams to try to improve their chances of getting a better contract as UFAS.

There are a lot of flaws to the idea put forth. One of the more creative one but also one of the worse ones. IT hurts not only teams but players

Yea I honestly would like to see a team randomly jump from 10th to 9th and such...but the only options are big jumps or no jumps
