Ivanov has KHL experience, correct? I'm not super worried about him being called up for emergency duty. I would imagine the KHL is equal to or better than the AHL for quality of competition.

Gardner is a different story though.

Anyone know why he only played two of the five playoff games despite having better numbers? Was he injured?

Pleshkov was 1A and Ivanov was 1B but it was closer down the stretch when they mostly really split starts...

Pleshkov: 32 Games, .939 Save Percentage and 2.01 GAA
-#1 in Save Percentage and #3 in GAA
Ivanov: 29 Games, .928 Save Percentage and 2.50 GAA
-#8 in Save Percentage and #19 in GAA

Worrisome thing about those numbers, SKA continually dominates Bobrov Division - has less success against the stronger teams in the KHL (especially in the playoffs).

Not sure if he has actually dove into this or if he was just saying common sense knowledge but Portzline said his expectation (and the orgs) is that Ivanov will be signing his ELC later this month.

This account seems to have a pretty good track record, so this isn’t good. But of course we’ll see

We all want our toys now but I don't think going to Cleveland gets Ivanov any closer to NHL ready compared to playing in the KHL. They develop goalies better over there anyways.
Yeah but it kinda hurts Cleveland lol. I guess they can just run it back with Gardner and Sawchenko

I’m not terribly surprised given the Zavragin trade and Moysevich signing with Vegas. He’s also only 21. Much easier to stay where you’re comfortable until you foresee a more direct NHL path even as a back-up.

Other than Sorokin being a one off, what other goalie has skipped from the KHL directly to the NHL in recent memory with any real success?

Vasilevskiy played in Syracuse
Shesterkin played in Hartford
Askarov played in Milwaukee and San Jose

Askarov is the one guy in that group that you could say developed in the AHL.

Vasi and Shesty were putting up amazing NHL numbers in the same seasons they played some AHL games, they were already more than NHL caliber when they came over.

But both of those guys still played over 1/2 a season in the AHL to acclimate over here and prove themselves.

Vasilevskiy was younger (20) but both Sorokin (25) and Shesterkin (24ish) older when they came over.

I think its wishful thinking for anyone to assume Ivanov is an answer for next season if he's only 21. He probably needs 2 more years. Maybe staying in the KHL is better for him. he more I think about it. How many people in Columbus have truly developed in the AHL within the CBJ organization at any position?

If he is the future, what does that make Jet?

Is he our Ben Bishop? Will we trade him for the next Erik Cernak?
Jet is 25 years old. Until shown otherwise, he is the future.

Ivanov and the other goalies are potential backups and potential trade pieces if they prove to be more than that. IMO

Just adding stats to the conversation. KHL game experience...

Askarov: 16 KHL games over three seasons, 154 AHL games over three seasons, established NHL starter at 22 years old
Vasi: 36 KHL games over two seasons, 37 AHL games over two seasons, established NHL starter at 22 years old
Ivanov: 108 KHL games over four seasons, currently 22 years old
Shesty: 117 KHL games over six seasons, 26 AHL games over one season, established NHL starter at 25 years old
Sorokin: 244 games over eight seasons, 0 AHL games, established starter at 26 years old

Agent Shumi Babayev, who represents goaltender Sergei Ivanov, commented on the player's future.

Ivanov's 22-year-old contract with SKA expired on May 31. He is a restricted free agent in the KHL. The goaltender was selected 138th overall by Columbus in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.

"Negotiations with the army club have already taken place. I think we'll probably sign a contract with Columbus soon.

" "A two-way entry-level contract?

" "Yes, but that's still an option.

" "How's Sergei feeling? Could he spend another year in Russia?

" "He probably could play another year," Babayev said.

Picturing Waddell seeing his name and just sighing deeply.
Oh don’t worry I am right now in the gym doing that while I catch up on news during the hockey game.

The past hour just been a straight /sigh fest….

• The KHL contract of Blue Jackets prospect goaltender Sergei Ivanov expired one week ago today, but Ivanov, through his agent Shumi Babayev, continues to negotiate with Ivanov’s KHL club and the Blue Jackets, who want him to sign a two-way deal and start next season with AHL Cleveland. Talks continue, Waddell said. Ivanov, who has a .923 save percentage in 108 career KHL games, was a fifth-round pick (No. 138) of the Jackets in 2022.
