This.
That being said, Shero has connections to Hughes's family and the US NTDP, so don't think he'd pass on Hughes anyway.

Yeah and Seth Jones father knew coaches and GMs from NHL and he was ought to go 1st?OA but went 4tg so u never really know. Byt sure i agree to a point. But the factor that he derserves to go 1 is still strong enough imo.

The hype will get Hughes to #1, but NOBODY knows who will end up being the better NHL player. It could be either one. Both have the same franchise potential.

I don’t think that matters. Didn’t Roy have connections to Seth Jones when he and MacKinnon were talked about for the first overall spot? By draft day, if I remember correctly, the consensus (ever so slightly) was that connection between the Avs (can’t remember if it was Roy or not) Jones meant he was likely to go 1st overall.

Well the hype+the performance. He's not a perfect prospect like Devil fans would like you to believe, but he did more than enough to keep the #1 spot he already had.

Remember Jack's face after at the lottery after #1 was revealed haha. He was letdown for sure. He'll probably get over it. If Kakko has a MONSTER WC, things might change even if that is unlikely.

It's funny how the one time we are in this position, most of us really don't care that our hated bitter rivals are getting a player like Hughes. Imagine if there was no Kakko at a number 2, we would hate life lol.

I thought Roy just straight up said MacKinnon was their guy weeks before the draft

im actually pretty bummed that the Devils are getting Hughes. I want more elite American players but now I have to hope he's a bust.

As a finn i would not pick Kakko over Hughes. If you actually watch Hughes and think what he has done you just can't see why you would not pick him if you were NJ Devils. And i love Kakko too but i think some of you just can't take the bluewhite glasses off.

He might have convinced you but not me and it's got nothing to do with blue-white glasses. And don't get me wrong, I'm sure Hughes will be an impact player and probably even an All-Star player in time, but I doubt he's going to be as good as Kakko in the end. The latter will never have to worry about not having enough strength to play in the big league, where there are many who wonder if the other will even make it there come next year. Yeah, Hughes broke some record in the kids' tournament in a super stacked team (the same tournament they both owned last year already) and had a good year without doing anything extra special and couldn't really get much anything going against few years older players in the WJC, which would worry me if I was a GM and holding the 1st OA. Sure they say he was injured back then but heck, if he can wear on the jersey and play the game then one must wonder how much of an obstacle that was in the begin with or if he even got slowed down because of that at all. Can't claim to have followed USHL but I doubt you have either. Just watched a lot of international hockey these past few years in order to be able to compare the two with good conscience.

Like said, Hughes is going to rack up easy points in the WHC in another stacked team and make the hockey world forget about Kakko for the coming days, but when the fall comes it's going to be all about Kakko again so just bare with it folks. The Finnish team is one of the worst I've ever seen and I probably wouldn't even bother watching the games if it wasn't for this young man.

Completely understand. I’d prefer Hughes as well. As long as Kakko works out it doesn’t matter as he’s a fantastic pick at 2.

Watched the game yesterday and a Incredible prospect and Kakko really looks taller then 187cm he is listed to

Devils would be doing us a favor if they leave Hughes

And I’m saying that as a massive fan and can’t wait for Kakko

There is a reason he’s the consensus #1 still
This. What @Kovalev27 is 100% right. .. this is a cant lose possibility for the nyr.. .there is no other choice. .and both choices are great
It's Taylor vs Tyler all over again...both players ended up being elite.

This is getting so old imo. It's not the 80's anymore so while this still is a valid argument it sure aint a strong one anymore.
As someone who is a huuuuge jack Hughes fan. .and would take Hughes 1oa 10 times out of 10... I think it's absolutely a valid concern.. .. he's been lit up a few times against smaller and slower players.
If Rick Nash at 6'4 and 220lbs could have been lit up, then Hughes (and kakko) can as well. .. the big difference here is that Hughes has already been hit, and hit hard, and has missed games due to injury.
His skating and edgework will definitely help a ton, but his style, of attacking players and making them miss with stick work will also lead to him messing up from time to time and getting lit up.

I love Hughes but it is most definitely a concern of mine.

What Hughes has done is mind boggling...some of the numbers he's putting up are insane.

I want to hear people say that kucherov isn't an amazing player and didnt just have an amazing year because he did it on a stacked team. Being the best player on a stacked team is in and of itself quite an accomplishment.

Don't kid yourself...when Hughes is on the ice he's an absolute #1 true blue elite first line center man.

Generational? That is arguable. .. but kakko isn't generational either.

Hughes is amazing. The edgework and change of direction he does is going to break some defenseman ankles when he makes the big club.

Both can be franchise corner stone. Neither is generational.

That would be my one big concern with Hughes as well. Really, both guys staying healthy is the most important thing right now...

The way that they beat the Taylor/Tyler thing to death at that draft was nauseating.

I do however agree.

Also, has anyone mentioned that Kakko not only looks better than Rantanen at the same age in the same league but isn’t there this argument to be made as well: FEL has only gotten better since Rantanen left, so isn't what Kakko has done over there even that much more impressive?

Both players have sky high potential. That’s all that we all know for sure. Nobody knows who will be the better NHL player or can predict the future.
