Speculation: The search for a new Head Coach - Rumors and Speculation

PV could have played hardball knowing Carle would say no. This way PV can say, "There was no one else so we had to hire Q."

PV is an evil genius!!!! Or I just made this scenario up in my head.
I’m 100% certain that neither the Blackhawks nor the Ducks were willing to cede the type of control and security that a guy used to running a program like Denver would be tempted by. Doesn’t require any sort of tinfoil hat to see that. A fail by either GM makes their seat significantly warmer at this point. Carle was the guy who needed the timing of the Cronin hire. Verbeek knows he can’t screw this up.

Playing devil’s advocate, no, but you CAN offer more money, and CAN offer more control, and CAN not have to micromanage everything.

This could easily just be the NHL teams GM’s egos were playing hardball, and he had what he considered better options
Playing devil's advocate to your devil's advocate, maybe Carle's ego is the problem.

Maybe he came in with an attitude like Deion Sanders' son and wanted way more than a first time coach should reasonably expect or demand. Maybe?

I’m sure that’s how the NHL guys saw it, but in his position, it’s like the trade request for Mintyukov offering 9th overall for him straight up. He’s dealing from a position of a perfect setup, they have to make it worth HIS while. He already stated very clearly what he thought of the “the coach is disposable if not immediately successful” approach NHL teams take. I’m honestly not sure why he even was offered interviews after he said that.

Also I kinda believe that Carle was never really a serious candidate.

In retrospect Lebrun’s tweet was that Verbeek interviewed Woodcroft, met with Carle, and contacted Sullivan.

IMO at this stage Pat is deciding between Quenneville or Woodcroft.
or it could be that Carle was waiting on this job or back to Denver and he was quietly told they were going in a different direction and we’re close to hearing an announcement of a hire. Equally plausible IMO

Yeah maybe.

There are legitimate reasons to not want to hire Carle, but as arguably the hottest coaching FA (true FA, unlike Montgomery) in the last decade+, I find it less plausible that Verbeek walked away from the negotiations and not him.

The Carle thing really isnt difficult to understand. Beeker had a convo with him, Carle lays out what he would require in order to leave Denver, didnt meet up with Beekers vision, game over.

Carle was in a situation where he could ask whatever he wanted from a NHL team because he didnt have to take any job. So he laid out what his perfect scenario was, and if a team met all of those points, he would have been willing to make the jump. His dream situation didnt present itself, so he stayed where he is already happy.

never saw carle as seriously considering the NHL anyways considering what he's helped build in denver. he's going to wait for the perfect situation instead of rushing into the league

Wouldn't surprise me if Carle doesn't make the move to the NHL until his kids are older. Which would be a long time from now.

I have zero animus towards Verbeek about this. Carle was an exciting idea but also one that should give everyone pause given his lack of experience.

This seems like one of those things where everyone acted appropriately based on their best interests. Carle was interested in the NHL but only if they provided a perfect situation. GMs were interested in Carle, but were unwilling to provide that much security for a rookie NHL head coach. Everyone parted ways amicably (I hope) and maybe this gets picked up again in 5 years. Nothing more to see here.

I’ve decided my ideal coach has maybe never coached before at least to my knowledge, not sure if he’d wanna coach, isn’t being discussed and probably has a 0.0001% chance of being the hire.

I want Scott Niedermayer to coach this team. I want them to play like him. I want them to be professionals like him. I want them to be smart like him. I want them to win like him.

First time coaches aren’t what they used to be. It can work. And you’d be hard pressed to tell me Scott Niedermayer would fail at anything in life.

He has no interest in coaching. He’s enjoying life, working part time and spending the rest of his time with family and friends. If he had any interest in a second career he would have moved in that direction by now. It’s not like he couldn’t get a coaching job if he wanted one.

From pretty much any interview Scotty has done, I've never got the sense he wanted to commit that much time to the game post retirement. I think he's fully content being an advisor and assistant who can keep his distance and spend time with family.

100%. You’re absolutely right. Doesn’t mean I don’t want him to do it though
