Speculation: The search for a new Head Coach - Rumors and Speculation

I agree and it is probably not lost on the Samuelis that they would be signing Quenneville at a substantial discount over what a non-damaged goods Quenneville would cost.

There is also a corporate/business perspective of operating within industry standards.

In business people who get fired for inappropriate behavior, but not criminal, move on to other jobs without repercussions other than giving explanations during interviews.

It is a business pure and simple. The industry banned Quenneville for 3 years and then removed the ban. There is no indication that he has engaged in this type of cover-up since then, and maybe he is less likely going forward.

From a corporate perspective, it is merely weighing the pros and cons and making a decision. I would guess many would be shocked by some of the people that sit on the boards of major corporations.

All of this is operating outside the correct moral stance associated with this hire.

John

I'm not shocked by the bolded at all. But that doesn't mean I'm interested in my favorite team distilling the evaluation of wrongdoers down to whether or not the noise and backlash from their hire outweighs the on-ice success they could bring the franchise.

I understand that's how the business world works far too often. I'd be happy if the Ducks didn't perpetuate it.

Gonna leave this here again

Talk about Quenneville is ok in this thread is allowed, as long as it is relevant to him coaching in Anaheim.

Libel is not ok, don’t do it.

Flaming others is not ok, don’t do it.

Questioning the morality and sincerity of the ethics of others is not ok, don’t do it.

I'm against coach Q being signed. There is additional reasons such as him being old and there is no point in signing someone who may tank ticket sales and attendance for off ice issue and not job performance related. I hope its only a thing where they are never going to sign him but interviewed him anyways.

Yeah, I know. I think it’s better to let it out for a couple days and let it burn itself out rather than piss off a bunch of people who will keep doing it anyways.

The number of people who don’t understand that the best way to keep a poster posting on a topic they feel strongly about is to tell them to stop, rather than just ignoring it….

Been reading the JQ stuff and saw people asking what type of coach he is and how that would impact potential Ducks roster/etc

Well one thing notable in Chicago was Q will give young players chance/like them if they put in effort on both ends. Guys like Versteeg, Shaw, Saad, Hjalmarsson, Leddy, etc all got NHL action young and eventually established themselves as regulars rather quickly under Q. If young players work hard and show they are capable Q would quickly elevate them (Hammer into top 4 shutdown role, Saad into top 6, etc)

The prospects that struggled to win over Q were guys like Jack Skille, Brandon Pirri, Marko Dano, Jimmy Hayes and others. Many who's defensive game was lacking, had perceived effort issues or simply weren't fit for team system wise

Pirri situation was one that in hindsight is laughable from fan POV now but at time was big divide with our fanbase. We desperately needed a #2C after Q moved Sharp to wing permanently after 2010 cup win. Many fans thought Pirri was the answer for #2C situation but his game while good for Rockford was not at all fit for NHL and Q never desired to give him shot with Hawks. Other young players (Shaw, Saad, etc) all jumped to NHL young, but Pirri stayed in Rockford and Hawks ultimately brought in short term vets to fill #2 C spot that worked out twice for them wonderfully (Handzus in 2013 and Richards in 2015). But the reality was Hawks never had a reliable #2C after Sharp move. When Pirri finally got look with Hawks it was clear Q was not fan and he was eventually traded to Panthers. Hindsight of course showed Q was right and Pirri was not a viable top 6 C or much of an NHL talent in end

One thing that came up especially late in Q's tenure was the division between him and Bowman and some of the notable clashes on roster that eventually lead to Q being fired

Bowman traded for guys like David Rundblad, Anthony Duclair and others who did not fit Q's view of team and in some cases were just outright horrific (Rundblad especially). There was clear divide in what type of team each wanted and someone like Duclair was example that while very talented Q and coaches were not fans (And as seen that has been recurring theme for Duclair thru his career)

Hjalmarsson trade and a few others Q was notably not happy with in final years

In final season there were 3 key young players that Q was high on. Gustav Forsling (Out injured to start year), Henri Jokiharju (At 19 years old Q loved his camp and he made team) and Nick Schmaltz (Coming off 52 pt season at age 21). When Q was fired, what seemed bright future for these 3 went away within organization

Our new coach that Bowman handpicked (He didn't hire Q) named Jeremy Colliton proved not a fan of any of those 3. Joker was eventually sent down to AHL mid-season and then traded in that god awful Nylander deal with Buffalo in offseason. Forsling was traded in offseason to Carolina and Schmaltz was traded in season in Dylan Strome deal. Terrible decisions by Bowman because his new coach didn't like those players for his "System" but again a situation in which Q was proven right on player evaluation

When Q was hired by Panthers it was him who wanted Forsling when he was on waivers from Canes. United together again Forsling was put into Panther's top 4 immediately and his career as we see now took off. The player Q wanted Forsling to be in Chicago he became in Florida

Not sure what types of players Verbeek likes but generally Q wants guys who put in work and at least make honest effort. He knows not everyone will be ace defensively but as seen with Kane, Leddy, etc Q will allow you to play your game as long as your put an honest effort into your own end. Kane progressively improved defensively under Q from his rather lackluster efforts very early in his career. He is no Selke winner but watching Kane on ice you see effort defensively and occasional big defensive play from him

Just felt I would chime in on that aspect. If your team is full of guys who are willing to put in an honest effort defensively Q will be supportive of letting them play thru mistakes. Its guys who loaf or dont put in honest effort in own end that can quickly find themselves on outs with Q

-- Also, Q can get some guys to buy into changing game for better of team and improving themselves as player. Michael Frolik is example after coming to Chicago Q asked him to focus more on defensive aspects/etc and did not put him in prime offensive roles, etc. Frolik could have sulked about it like some would but instead he and Kruger together became a dynamic shutdown forward duo who in 2012-13 came up big for Hawks in that role asked of them --

Kruger is also type of guy that Q loved. Someone who may not have had talent offensively but was a guy you could depend on 100% of night to give you strong effort in his own end and energy on ice, If you have someone like that for your bottom 6 and Q is hired look for that guy to be given prominence in shutdown role

Thank you for the insights, very much appreciated.
He sounds like someone that Verbeek is looking for as far as hockey things go.

Q's biggest flaw is usual one of vet coaches, He is too blind to a vets decline

A prime example would be Michael Handzus

Handzus was wonderful in short run in #2C spot in Chicago after trade in 2013

Regular season
11 GP with 1 goal + 5 assists for 6 pts and a +4

Playoffs
23 GP with 3 goals + 8 assists for 11 pts and a +7

It was a great moment to see him win cup and all but that should have been end. Q wanted him back and Bowman gave him a 1 yr extension and well 2013 proved to be last gasps of his career but Q kept giving him playing time even when it was clear he was done

2013-14 season for Handzus

Regular Season
59 GP with 4 goals + 12 assists for 16 pts

Playoffs
19 GP with 2 goals + 1 assists for 3 pts and a -8

Cant outrun father time and Handzus NHL career ended after Hawks game 7 OT loss in Western Conference final

Obviously never know how much Q was on board with Handzus being traded in Tkachuk deal back in day but him joining Hawks at end of his career was likely result of his history with Q and Handzus in his prime was a hell of a player who fit Q's system perfectly but that final year for Handzus was rough and no matter how bad he was Q kept putting him out there in playoffs believing he could play.

Outside of his OT goal vs Kings in WCF he was terrible

Q was blinded by his history with Handzus (Handzus broke into league and established himself under Q in St Louis) and that last gasp run in 2013 in which Handzus helped Hawks win cup further blinded Q from reality that Handzus was done the following year and should have been given old yeller treatment (Figuratively)

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reported on Tuesday’s “Morning Cuppa Hockey” show that the Ducks are the only team confirmed to be in the process of conducting interviews.
“I think Anaheim’s trying,” Saravalli said. “They’re the first team that I know that has actually completed interviews and has more scheduled. They’re grinding away to try and make that happen.”
