Just do it Darcy. Overpay for a one year rental to make up the cap savings from buying out Skinner. Then next year a prospect may have arrived to fill the new player or Skinners offense.

I feel like Joker has more value than this. A cost controlled RHD with decent skill is relatively rare. I could be wrong.

I don't favor the buyout for Skinner, but I do favor going after a C like Monahan to slot in a top-six role, and giving some flexibility to moving Thompson and/or Cozens down the line-up if they falter.They will buyout Skinner to sign Kane and Monahan/Duchene

Buyout Skinner will provide additional cap space to sign new players. This is among other things.

I will say, the one area where Buffalo is fortunate is that there seems to be a lot of quality 4th line wingers available this offseason, so even a lesser destination like Buffalo should be able to land 1 or 2 good ones. That’s not the case every year.
Why not? He will be stuck on the cap at $9m as a liability. That 2.5m you lose for the extra years is a 4th line winger in 4 years.
Well maybe, but he's middle six quality and adds options for our two Cs that have plenty of faults in their game right now.
Really, Buffalo is teetering on not having any very good Cs. A lot depends on those two getting their heads on straight. It could end up pretty ugly, although I have higher hopes for Cozens.

To me it's one good year of cap savings (when they don't exactly need it), two years of "wait why did we do this" (when they might need it more), and three more years of wasting cap space for at least one quality depth player (when they should be at their peak of Cup contention). I'd rather bite the bullet for just three years when they might be a playoff team but not a Cup contender.
It is a fair statement. I think they could be a contender especially with the savings first few years.

I think it's hard to imagine without them interacting first.
Hearing stories about Lindy and afinogenov, it seems like he is willing to give guys chances even if they don't fit his style

Well that was a long time ago and now it's a different situation. Lindy said that they talked a lot with Adams and they have a plan, we'll see what that plan is, but I wouldn't be surprised if Skinner was buyout.

There is no chance in hell Adams does a grand overall change of the roster this offseason especially with the moves he's made previously. He will probably add a 3C and a bottom 6 winger, maybe a depth defensemen for cheap and call it an offseason. Maybe he also splashes a UFA for 1 year like Patrick Kane, I don't see anything more.
You hit the nail squarely here. Skinner's cap isn't a problem this year and could be more of a problem in 2-3 years when we are one player away.

I remain amazed how many people still look at the Skinner decision as a cap saving idea and not a “this player can’t play here anymore” idea.
If he’s getting bought out it’s not to save them cap this year. It’s because he can’t play in the bottom six and he doesn’t belong in the top six.
The cap is something you deal with because you made the choice to move on from an aging low effort player. Paying him 9 million to sit isn’t a real plan. Moving on is. Because you’re trying to win. And that starts by jettisoning the losers.
Wanting to ride this another year…when you need to start winning…because of the cap penalties 4-6 years away is madness. And if you had the GM job and it was on the line…you wouldn’t do it.

Why do people not understand that making a blockbuster move that isn't giving up X for prospects is virtually impossible due to no move/trade clauses? Even if Adams offers X for player Y and that team agrees to it player Y invokes his NTC and the deal falls apart. People expecting a miraculous makeover of the roster this offseason are going to end up being bitterly disappointed.

Or Skinner just doesn't fit in, which seems obvious. There's a lot of smoke that Adams wants to add a top 6 forward, he's said so himself. We also need a 3C. A few physical guys like Lindy mentioned. Everyone needs to be on fire with the same idea.

They probably want a top 6 winger for the Cozens line to allow Benson time to continue developing on the third line. They could probably build a hell of a third line with Benson, a 3C acquisition and Greenway. Alternatively, if one of the prospects makes the jump and can handle 2nd line minutes, perhaps Tuch and Benson give you a ridiculously good third line.
My goal is just to have good players throughout the forward group. We don't have much room in the group for one-way scoring types (Skinner/Olofsson). Without truly elite players, we need good hockey players on every single line. That said, I'll take Pat Kane as a top 6 fill-in for now as I think he'd make our PP much more lethal and seems a bit more clutch than a lot of our current group.
